Family Worship Night
Week of February 5, 2012
Devotion: Second Fiddle1
Read: Philippians 2:4
Preschoolers:
1) Do you like when people help you? God wants us to help
others.
2) How can you help other people?
In an orchestra, the first-chair violinist—the most prominent and
high-profile member of the orchestra—leads out by playing the
main melody. While there are other violinists in the string section,
they are not as honored as the lead violinist. This is where we get
the expression “playing second fiddle.”
Children:
1) According to the reading, should we feel sad or bad when we
are the “second fiddle” and not the “first fiddle”? Why or why not?
If you play second fiddle to someone else, it means that the other
person is in a stronger position or is seen as more important than
you. And most of us don’t like feeling that way. We are all born
with the inner drive to be seen as important and the desire to be
honored. We love to be served rather than to serve others. We feel
jealous when someone else gets more attention or more praise
than we do. We are usually scoping out situations to figure out
how we can get the best seat or the biggest slice, not looking for
ways to play second fiddle.
Youth:
1) What does it mean to “die” to yourself?
When we allow other people to get their needs or desires met
while ours go unmet, when we give someone else preferred
treatment while we are ignored, when we put the focus on
another’s achievements or hardships while we stay in the
shadows…that’s what it means to die to ourselves. It is a sure sign
that the Holy Spirit is meeting our need for significance in the
deepest places of our souls. Only then will we be content with
playing second fiddle.
Discussion Questions
1
Nancy Guthrie. One Year of Dinner Table Devotions and Discussion
Starters (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, 2008), 316.
2) What can you do to serve someone else this week?
2) What can you do this week to put others before yourself?
Adults:
1) A theme running through our culture is the theme of putting
ourselves first. How does this theme line up with the Word of
God? How can we make sure that we don’t fall into the of letting
our culture define us?
2) Think of someone in your life who is in need of the light of
Christ. How can you put this person first these week to show them
that light?
Prayer Thought: Thank God for giving you opportunities to serve
others this week.
