POSITIONS AVAILABLE
1. Position Title: Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Fields of Specialization: Developmental programming, pregnancy, metabolism,
fetal development, microbiome, placenta
The Sloboda Lab group (www.slobodalab.com) in the Dept of Biochemistry and
Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University seeks a post-doctoral basic science
research scientist. The successful candidate will have grounding in developmental
programming, animal modeling and molecular biology in pursuit of the early life origins
of complex diseases. Ideally with training and experience in perinatal biology (e.g.,
maternal metabolism, fetal development, placental function) and metabolic and/or
immunological signalling (e.g., glucose, insulin signalling, macrophage biology,
inflammatory signalling pathways). Projects are CIHR-funded and require a postdoctoral lead on specific questions relating to mouse models (transgenic and germ
free) of metabolic adaptation to obesity during pregnancy (in vivo glucose and insulin
tolerance testing, metabolic profiling), cell signaling in placental cells (primary cell
culture and cell lines) and microbiome analyses. The post-doctoral period is for a
minimum of two years and the candidate will be mentored towards an independent
academic career. An ability to work independently as well as in a strong team-science
environment are required. All applicants must also show ability to supervise students.
2. Position Title: Postdoctoral Social Scientist
Fields of Specialization: Pregnancy, quantitative and qualitative data collection and
analysis, survey work, statistical methods, complex intervention design.
The Sloboda Lab group (www.slobodalab.com) in the Dept of Biochemistry and
Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University seeks a post-doctoral social
scientist/psychologist. The successful candidate will have a background in applied
psychology or health research, and knowledge of behaviour change. We require skills
in collecting and analysing both quantitative and qualitative data (ie.conduct
interviews, moderate focus groups, analyze data). Some experience of complex
intervention design will be favourably viewed. Training and support in data collection
and management and in intervention design will be given. The candidate will work with
local community groups and health institutions to develop a community-based formative
and knowledge transfer program of intervention to improve women’s periconceptional
nutrition and body composition through increased knowledge and application of
Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD)-based evidence The postdoctoral period is for a minimum of three years and the candidate will be mentored
towards an independent academic career. An ability to work independently as well as
in a strong team-science environment are required. All applicants must also show
ability to supervise students.
3. Position Title: PhD student
The Sloboda Lab group (www.slobodalab.com) in the Dept of Biochemistry and
Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University seeks a student interested in pursuing a
PhD degree. The successful candidate will have reasonable grounding in physiology
and or biochemistry and have laboratory skills in basic PCR, western blotting, and
protein work origins of complex diseases. Training and experience in perinatal biology
(e.g., maternal metabolism, fetal development, placental function) and metabolic
and/or immunological signalling (e.g., glucose, insulin signalling, macrophage biology,
inflammatory signalling pathways) will be considered assets. Projects are CIHR-funded
and require a PhD student with an interest in mouse models (transgenic and germ free)
of metabolic adaptation to obesity during pregnancy (in vivo glucose and insulin
tolerance testing, metabolic profiling), and long term follow-up of offspring. Projects
also include targeted nutritional interventions. Applicants will be enrolled in the Dept
of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences graduate program
(http://biochemgraduateprogram.ca/).
