Registration for 2010-2011 Classes Starts in Late February
The process of registering for classes for the 2010 – 2011 school year will begin on February 24 this year and
finish just in time for the required sophomore class administration of the California High School Exit Exam,
which will take place on March 16 and 17.
For registration this year, counselors will again deliver course selection planning forms to current freshmen,
sophomores, and juniors from February 24 through March 2. During this time the counselors will answer student questions and provide information regarding college entrance requirements. One week later, students will
visit a computer lab or office on campus to get their course requests formally entered into the district’s student
information system. At that time, students will be given a printed confirmation of the courses that they have
selected. Parents can and should ask to see this.
On Friday, February 26, school representatives will visit Horner Junior High to begin the same process with
next year’s incoming freshmen. The Freshman Orientation meeting for students and parents is set for the following Monday evening, March 1. It will take place in Valhalla, the campus auditorium, between 5:00 and
8:00 p.m. Please note that our annual Open House will take place during that same time period and will be
housed in the Main Gym.
At the Freshman Orientation meeting, members of the school staff will describe various aspects of the Irvington program and take questions from audience members. Incoming freshmen must complete their course selection forms in time for them to be collected at Horner starting on March 5.
Vice Principal Steven Musto, who is in charge of class registration, again emphasized the importance of students taking the entire process seriously. “Students and parents need to choose classes carefully, in a timely
manner, and with all of their long and short-term goals in mind, because course sign-ups determine what
classes will be offered next year. Classes will be tight next year so choose classes in mind that you will want
to keep. Class changes will be difficult once your schedule is made,” said Musto.
He added, “We get the broadest choice of electives and the largest number of classes and teachers if everyone
signs up for classes on time. If a student fails to sign up for next year’s classes on time, a counselor or administrator will choose classes for the student. And I do encourage students and parents to follow teacher recommendations regarding core class placement for the following year. Following those recommendations tends to
improve student grades.”
Finally, Musto noted that the school once again intends to pass out “course request confirmation forms” sometime in May so that students can review for a second time the course selection choices that were fed into the
district’s computer system in their name.

IRVINGTON CAREER PATHWAYS ACADEMY’S
NMAA
IHS is setting up a New Media Arts Academy which will
prepare its students for careers in New Media with a fine
arts emphasis within the context of broadcasting and the
internet. Students will become literate in traditional and
New Media terminology, ideas, application, and ethics in
creating their own interactive video productions, podcasts, animations, blogs, and images. Specifically students will become proficient in film direction, production,
photography, lighting, editing, sound design and promotion as well as adept in a variety of software applications.
Students will be placed in families in core curriculum
classes. This allows for students to have a support system
(add something else/different). A unique feature about
this program is the career technical element where students take courses designed to help prepare them for the
world of work in this exciting new field.
There are many ways to show your support and help get
this program off the ground. We are looking for guest
artists to come and present, donations of high powered
Mac computers, Digi Design Pro Tools Software, everything for a sound booth, including microphones. HD Digital Cameras, and Adobe Pro Tools. Finally, next summer
we will be offering internships for our talented and
trained students between their junior & senior years, so if
you would like a great student intern let us know.

Participate in the Arts Magnet Program at Irvington
Is your child creative or artistic? Would your child benefit from instruction
that recognizes his or her creative temperament and strengths? If you answered yes to these questions, then the Arts Magnet Program at Irvington
High School might be the perfect fit. Irvington is the Visual and Performing
Arts (VAPA) Magnet school for the district and was created to serve the large population of students interested in the arts. Irvington offers many programs and classes to enrich and support
the high school experience for these kids. Two specific curricular examples are the Center for
Creative Arts (CCA) and New Media Arts Academy (NMAA). The CCA and NMAA integrate
arts into the required core curriculum. Students may also choose from a wide assortment of
other Arts-based elective classes.
As a member of the Arts Magnet Program, students may participate in the Center for Creative
Arts (CCA) which is an Arts-based “Family” that spans from Grades 9-12. The CCA framework
integrates the visual and performing arts into the coursework. As freshmen, students are
placed into a family consisting of English, Science, and Arts Spectrum (an Arts survey course).
In these subjects, the core curriculum is enhanced through arts-based activities that target the
students’ artistic strengths or interests. Students may continue with the CCA Family throughout their next three years with the families constructed in the English and Social Science
classes which once again offers students curriculum tailored to their interests in a supportive
and familiar peer group.
IHS has established a New Media Arts Academy (NMAA) which will prepare its students for
careers in New Media with a fine arts emphasis within the context of broadcasting and the
internet. Students will become literate in traditional and New Media terminology, ideas, application, and ethics while creating their own interactive video productions, podcasts, animations,
blogs, and images. Specifically students will become proficient in film direction, production,
photography, lighting, editing, sound design and promotion as well as adept in a variety of software applications. The NMAA will soon start using a state-of-the-art studio room to support the
innovative courses. Students will be placed in families in core curriculum classes. A unique
feature about this program is the career technical element where students take New Media
courses designed to help prepare them for the world of work in this exciting new art field. The
NMAA structure encompasses Grades 10-12. Students may apply to become fully integrated
into the NMAA program as they register for their sophomore classes.
Falling under the Visual and Performing Arts umbrella, the CCA and the NMAA provides all
students the opportunity to excel and shine, both artistically and academically. Students have
shared interests and a common bond with their classmates and teachers which creates a rich
and exciting high school experience.
In the Arts Magnet Program, students are expected to take advantage of our rich and diverse
Visual and Performing Arts course offerings. At IHS, there is an artistic opportunity for everyone from the curious beginner to the advanced artiste. Irvington offers a wide variety of
courses in Visual Arts, including Photography, Sculpture, Drawing, Digital Imaging, and AP
Studio Art. In the Performing Arts, students can opt for classes at all levels—beginning to advanced—including Drama, Stagecraft, Hip Hop Dance, Dance Techniques, Choir, and Band.
Irvington, in partnership with Ohlone College, offers the most advanced arts classes in the dis-
trict, in both the Visual and Performing Arts. Magnet students often participate in Irvington
Conservatory Theatre productions behind the scenes and on the stage. Artists, actors, musicians, and technicians are given the chance to hone their skills for a live audience. Irvington’s
also has many brand new arts facilities such as a dance studio, dressing rooms, costume design room, set design room, and art gallery.
To be part of this wonderful program, several steps must be followed:
Irvington representatives will visit all five junior high schools before the registration period to
distribute materials. Applications will be available at this time. Space in the Arts Magnet Program is limited to 15 transfer students from the Kennedy attendance area and 20 from the others (with the exception of Horner).
All students must complete the following steps to participate:
Fill out a Center for Creative Arts/New Media Arts Academy application
Complete the Magnet Waiver Form and submit it to the home high school (this is not necessary for Horner students)
NOTE: A packet containing the CCA/NMAA application and Magnet Waiver Form can be obtained at the home high school. Procedural details are also outlined in this packet.
Provide some verification of artistic interest. Multiple examples of evidence are encouraged.
This may be in the form of the following:
 Video of a performance
 Digital image of a drawing or painting
 Actual painting or drawing (will be returned)
 Teacher Recommendation Letter
 Interview with Arts Magnet teachers (if work sample is unavailable)
Irvington representatives will have Arts Magnet Program forms and information available when
they visit the junior high schools on the following dates:
Hopkins—February 19, 2010; Thornton—February 26, 2010; Walters—February 10, 2010;
Centerville—February 17, 2010; Horner—February 25, 2010
If you would like to learn more about the Visual and Performing Arts Programs, the Center for
Creative Arts, or the New Media Arts Academy please attend Irvington’s Freshmen Orientation
and Open House on Monday, March 1, 2010 from 6-8 p.m.
This year the time frame for the open enrollment period has been reduced. The open enrollment period is from February 26th to March 19th. All applications and related materials
must be complete and submitted by March 19, 2010. The Magnet Waiver Form must be turned
into Attendance Area High School during this period. The Center for the
Creative Arts/New Media Arts Academy Application must be submitted to
Irvington during this open enrollment period.
Application forms will be made available soon on Irvington’s website:

Clint Johns, Coordinator [email protected] www.irvington.org/ita Irvington’s Information Technology Academy is now midway through year 2! All ITA courses are tech‐
infused and encourage the use of technology whenever possible and practical. We also focus on soft skills that make employees highly desirable, such as communication, team work, and documentation. ITA classes include (but are not limited to): Introduction to Technology (Programming / Website Crea‐
tion / GPS / Podcasting / Computer Repair), Robotics, CISCO IT Essentials, CISCO Computer Networking, and AP Computer Science, in addition to the other English, Science, Math, History, and elective classes you will take. Despite recent budget cuts, we have been able to accomplish quite a bit this semester: DeVry‐sponsored “Her World” conference for high school girls interested in the IT Field SMARTBoards installed in 4 ITA classrooms Quarterly Potluck Dinners in lieu of Parent‐Teacher Conferences (ask your child about attending!!! www.irvington.org/itapotluck ) Class set of webcams, courtesy of Logitech T‐Shirts partially sponsored by SEMI coming 2nd semester Robotics is starting up 2nd semester in room P6; email Mr. Johns ([email protected]) for info on how to sign up! Our juniors are also starting 2nd semester with an industry mentor to learn more about IT careers! Also, be on the lookout for upcoming field trips and competitions! TO IRVINGTON PARENTS AND COMMUNITY
Thanks to your generosity during the Donations Campaign at the beginning of this
school year, we now have a brand new copy machine in the library and ink for our
printer! Our old copier, the only one on campus available to students, was heavily
used to make photocopies of important forms, to complete assignments, and to create art projects and fliers, but it was many years old and broke down frequently.
Our printer is essential for so many kids who don’t have access to a printer at home
and desperately need to print out school work. Thanks to our generous community,
we have ink and a beautiful new copy machine that makes double-sided copies and
has many features that our previous dinosaur lacked! Thank you, IHS community
for helping our students have the resources they need to keep doing excellent academic work.
