An exhausted Alex was encouraged to reach her suspended tent-bed last night by fans who took to Twitter to urge her on in her last stretch of the day. As darkness drew, comedian Sarah Millican was one of many supporters who tweeted: “@sportrelief will someone there shout 'COME ON ALEX, YOU CAN DO IT' for me please?” Having hauled herself a whopping 700 feet up the vertical rock to reach her hammock style bed for the night, Alex needed a restful sleep to recharge and fight fatigue ahead of the finish line today (Thursday 20th March). With just 200 feet to go, the final stretch is in sight – but the worst is yet to come as Alex needs to tackle a tricky overhang protruding far out above the canyon floor. This mammoth challenge has seen Alex put in three solid months of gruelling training with an expert team to help her conquer the colossal rock face. Not only is it an exhausting ordeal during the day, when she is burning up to 700 calories per hour, but at night time too when has to sleep on the vertical rock in a suspended tent. She also has to forgo washing and is likely to suffer sore muscles, achy feet and cuts and bruises to her hands. Alex needs the public’s support to keep her going – she’s a long way from home and a long way from the ground – so sponsor her at sportrelief.com/Alex. Viewers can follow her mountainous journey, and triumphant ascent, live on The One Show tonight from 7pm, BBC One and in a special documentary on Sunday 23rd March, 3.15pm, BBC One. Money raised from the challenge will be spent to help people living incredibly tough lives in the UK and around the world, including families affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. -EndsFor more information please contact: Comic Relief Media Team 020 7820 2500 [email protected] For more information about the Comic Relief Media Team, please go to: www.comicrelief.com/media-centre Find us on Twitter - @sportrelief and Facebook - facebook.com/SportRelief Notes to editors About the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games The first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games take place from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd March 2014.
