PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Len Cook
As I said in my last report to you, I was very surprised and
pleased to see so many Members take an interest in the Unit by
attending the Election Meeting in January. Now I am asking you
to continue to take this kind of interest and attend our General
Meetings on a regular basis. Our General Meetings are held in
January, April, June, Sept, November and December. We need
to get more Members actively involved and have more Members
eligible to run for Executive. I think it is ridiculous that a Unit
this size has its Executive elected by acclamation. Show that you
care about the Unit and take an interest. Also, if you are an Associate Member, please think about applying for your Affiliate
status so that you can become eligible to run for Executive. Your
Unit needs you.
We had hired someone to work as Office Assistant but unfortunately things did not work out as expected. We are presently
looking for someone to assist Joanne with the work as we are
way behind. The plan is to have two people trained in all facets
of the Office work so that we will be able to cover holidays and
sick time. Things in the Office should settle down once we are
caught up with the back log.
Our next General Meeting will be March 19th. There will be a
lot going on at this Meeting. I am asking Associate Members who
have not been initiated to attend as we will be having an initiation at this Meeting. Also at this Meeting we will be having a bielection to fill the three vacant spots on the Executive. Once
again, if you are eligible, please consider letting your name stand
for election.
The Unit Accountant will also be in attendance to give the Unit
Audited Financial Statement for 2014. This will tell us where we
stand and what we need to do to make our Unit viable. You Executive have been busy looking at ways to cut cost and to increase revenues but once again we need your help. We cannot
increase our revenues unless the Membership utilizes the Unit. It
really does take a strong Membership to make a strong Unit.

LADIES AUXILIARY
Elvia Furutani
Well here we are in March already and going into the third month of 2015. This being a Provincial Convention year is always a time for new changes, new
leadership and new growth in the Association.
The Ladies are not doing as well as we would like but this has
been happening at most Units. Lack of new Membership seems
to be the main cause.
The Ladies at our Unit are still trying but our up-coming Convention may be a turning point for us as well. The Ladies have
had a couple of Celebrations of Life in February and those went
well.
Our past General Meeting had nine in attendance and all business was handled. The Ladies had their year end dinner at D.J.’s
Restaurant on February 15th. Eight of our Ladies were present
and an enjoyable evening was had by all.
Our next General Meeting is March 10th at 7:00 pm. We hope
to see everyone there. Some of our Ladies are still volunteering
on Unit Committees, Meat draw, Chase the Queen and filling
in where needed.
Our Unit is very busy and with spring around the corner, and
hopefully good weather, the Ladies wish everyone well.
To our shut-ins and our at home Members, our thoughts and
prayers are with you. To our Service Men and Women and all
past and present Veterans, our prayers are with you. “ We Will
Remember Them”.

CURLING
Judie Brown
February 15th we held our annual Calcutta at the
Deer Lodge curling club. We had a lot of laughs
that day. We introduced each team with a bio of
each player on the team. This always proves to be
very funny. Each team provides their own write
up, and I adlib. Thank you all who bid on the
teams and good luck. Results will be presented at
the banquet April 11/2015.
Thank you to Gord Kent and Syd Stamper for assisting me with the Calcutta.
Number 4 Legion has challenged 283 to a grudge
match Sunday March 15th at Deer lodge curling
club. Some teams will be in the bonspiel at Portage La Prairie that weekend, but any teams who
are left will hopefully play against #4. Please see
Judie Brown if you are interested. I would like to
wish good luck to the teams going to Portage.
Good luck, have fun and make the Unit proud.

LADIES SNOOKER
We have one game left in our second round-robin and play-offs
will start in early March. That’s when we separate the wheat
from the chaff. We should have some very interesting games
coming up when play-offs start. We have a lot of very good
teams. We are still looking for someone to challenge Lynn in
the high run department. Let’s go, girls!
It seems strange to look around the games room on Thursdays
and not be sure of who you are playing. We have many girls
escaping the winter for a couple of weeks and so we have lots of
spares. Those gals that have been away or are away have been off
to wonderful, warm places like Hawaii, the Caribbean, Texas,
and Palm Springs. Those of you who have had to face the winter
head on, remember spring is only weeks away. Sorry, didn’t
mean to rub it in.
Our next meat draw is scheduled for March 20th. The teams
responsible are Diane & Bea, Bev and Cindy, and Minna & Shannan.

In closing, we would like to wish everyone a very happy St. Patrick’s Day and let’s all keep hoping for an early spring.
SOCIAL SERVICES
In a recent news release The Honorable Erin O’Toole, Minister of Veterans Affairs announced that the Government of
Canada will commemorate the 70th. Anniversary of the Liberation of Netherlands. The Minister is inviting Canadian
Veterans of the Liberation of Netherlands to take part in the
ceremonies by sending a delegation comprised of Veterans
who served on land, at sea and in the air during the Second
World War campaign. ‘During the Second World War tens
of thousands of Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen played
a key roll in the Liberation of the Netherlands including
175,000 soldiers of the First Canadian Army. The cost of
victory was high as more than 7.600 Canadians lost their
lives.’ (quoted from ANAVETS) From 2014 to 2020 Canada will mark the events, the battles and the social conditions that shaped both the First and Second World Wars to
encourage Canadians to understand more about these two
wars and to pay tribute to those who contributed to these
defining chapters in our collective history.

HEALTH AND WELFARE
If you are like most people you spend a vast majority of your
time sitting down - in your office, commuting to and from
work, watching TV, and socializing with friends. The average person spends 9 to 10 hours of every day sitting without
significant movement. The more sedentary you are at work,
the more sedentary you will tend to be at home. This behaviour can be problematic as the human body was designed to
be in more or less constant movement throughout the day.
Sitting increases your rate of lung cancer by over 50 percent.
Evidence shows that prolonged sitting actively promotes
dozens of chronic diseases including being overweight and
type 2 diabetes. Maintaining a regular fitness regime cannot
counteract the accumulated ill effects of sitting 8 to 12 hours
a day. Evidence shows that when you sit for lengths of time,
disease processes set in that independently raise your mortality risk, even if you eat right, exercise regularly and are very

This increased cancer risk is thought to be linked to weight
gain and associated biochemical changes such as alterations in
hormones, metabolic dysfunction, leptin dysfunction and
inflammation. As a consequence of sitting, your blood sugar
levels, blood pressure, and toxin build-up all rise. The cellular mechanisms involved in the maintenance of your body
and health are shutting down. This sitting position is not
only bad for your back, your wrists, your arms and your metabolism, but it switches off the fundamental fuelling systems
that integrate what’s going on in the bloodstream, muscles
and tissues. To counteract the ill effects of prolonged sitting:

When watching TV stand up and/or walk around during

in mind with healthy sitting including:
Stack sitting– (J-spine) in order to allow the bones in your
spine to stack well and the muscles alongside relax, sit with
your butt sticking out. When you breathe, each in-and-out
breath will automatically lengthen and settle your spine. This
stimulates circulation and allows natural healing while you
sit. A J-spine refers to a posture where your back is straight,
your lumbar relatively flat, and your buttocks are protruding
slightly.
Stretch sitting– to elongate your spine use your back rest as a
traction device. This simple manoeuvre brings your back
away from the back rest, lengthens your spine and roots you
higher up against the back rest. It will also help flatten out
your lumbar area and this alone can sometimes provide immediate pain relief if you have sciatic nerve root pain.
