Week Ending 18.11.16
This week in Reception….
We started our topic ‘Do Dragons Exist?’ We enjoyed listening to lots of stories about
dragons and particularly liked the story ‘The Paper Bag Princess’. We used a variety of
media to make our role-play areas into magical castles. In the castle we learnt to act
out imaginative stories, remembering that a story has a beginning, middle and end. We
also learnt about the shape, size and colours of dragons. We have a very special book
that shows real dragon scales and dragon dust. The children are very excited to know
if this book is real. The children are also excited to think how they could capture a
dragon and tame him for a pet. The children have decided that lady dragons have long
eyelashes and men dragons are fierce protecters. Can your child recall any dragon
facts? Have they decided if dragons are real or not? Can they explain their thinking?
The children learnt the new phonemes of ‘ff’, ‘ll’, ‘ss’ this and recapped all the Phase 2
tricky words ‘the’, ‘I’, ‘to’, ‘no’, ‘go’ and ‘into’. They learnt that these sounds are two
letters together making one sound and that we would often find these sounds at the
end of words, for example; ‘puff’, ‘full’ and ‘hiss’. Can your child think of as many words
that have these ‘end’ sounds and write them in their sound books? How many different
words can they write? Can they identify which words are real and which are nonsense?
Can they choose a word and use it in a sentence?
In Number Time this week the children have been learning to use and understand the
language of ‘addition’. The dragons have been busy laying eggs. The children counted
how many eggs there were to start with and then the dragon laid some more. Finally
the children counted across both groups to find ‘How many altogether’? The children
are now getting really good at using the language of ‘more’. Well done children! The
children have now moved on this week to finding the total by adding two groups
altogether. Some children even had a go at writing the number sentence using the ‘+’
and ‘=’ symbol. Please encourage your child at home to use the vocabulary involved in
‘addition’; ‘I had 2, then I added 3 and now I have 5 altogether. 2+3=5.’
