The Answer Key
1 Gail cheerfully entered Mrs. Lint’s classroom Monday morning. She scanned the room to see if her friend Becky had come yet. Becky was putting her things away. Gail rushed to greet her. They started talking about the sleepover Becky had had on Saturday night. The two girls chatted for several minutes. Then, it was time for their classes to start. 2 As Gail got her books out, Mrs. Lint, in her usual strict voice, said, “I hope everyone studied for today's science quiz. When you get to school in the morning, it is important to use your time wisely.” Mrs. Lint was a nice teacher, but not very forgiving when students weren’t responsible. 3
Gail’s happy smile quickly turned into a frantic look. She had completely forgotten about the quiz. Her plan had been to study her notes when she got to school. Instead, she had spent the whole time talking to Becky. Since she and her family had gone out of town on Sunday, she hadn’t had any time to study. The only reason her parents let her spend the night at Becky’s house was because she had promised to study for her quiz Monday morning. Her parents were going to be upset. She knew that she would not be allowed to go to any more sleepovers. 4
Science was Gail’s first class. She hadn’t looked at her notes since Friday. When Mrs. Lint handed her the quiz, she got up to sharpen her pencil. As she glanced over at Mrs. Lint’s desk, she saw a piece of paper with big red words that read “ANSWER KEY.” She quickly looked away. She didn’t want to cheat on her quiz. Gail went back to her desk and tried her best to answer the questions. 5
If I don’t do well on my quiz, I won’t be able to go to any more sleepovers. Becky’s sleepover was awesome! I would hate to miss a sleepover just because of one silly quiz, thought Gail. Finally, she convinced herself to peek at the answers. 6
Slowly, Gail went to Mrs. Lint’s desk pretending to sharpen her pencil. She memorized the letters in order. Then, she quickly returned to her seat and finished her multiple-choice quiz. With a spring in her step, Gail happily turned in her paper. 7
The next day, Mrs. Lint gave the quizzes back. When Gail got hers, it hadn’t been graded. Instead, it had the words “Redo” on the top. Every answer had a mark beside it. Gail was confused. She was certain she had remembered the right answers. 8
Mrs. Lint pulled Gail aside to speak with her. “Your quiz looked exactly like the answer key from last week’s quiz. Did you copy the answers from the sheet on my desk?” asked Mrs. Lint quietly. 9
Gail was horrified. Her face quickly turned red. She felt guilt and embarrassment. Mrs. Lint knew that Gail had been dishonest on her quiz. 10
“Since you decided to be dishonest, you will redo your quiz after school. Go call your parents and tell them that they will have to come pick you up,” Mrs. Lint said very sternly. 11
As Gail walked to the school’s office, she dreaded having the conversation with her parents. Instead of simply telling them that she forgot to study, she now had to tell them that she had cheated on her quiz. She picked up the phone and with a shaky voice, told her mom what she had done. Tears flowed out of her eyes. It was not a good day for Gail. Copying the “right” answers was the wrong thing to do. 10 Directions: Click on the correct answers.
