Nalle ES, Washington, DC World Language Spanish at Aiton Elementary School, Washington, DC My experience as a Spanish teacher at J. C. Nalle Elementary School in Washington, DC Teaching Spanish at Aiton Elementary in Washington, DC gave me the opportunity to overcome challenges and to grow professionally. Many students at Aiton ES are impacted by family and social situations that contribute to their behavior in the classroom. I believe that the best way to improve classroom behavior is to seek additional classroom management training. I believe this training will be critical and useful in helping me improve how I manage my students, and improve outcomes. J. C. Nalle is a DC public school located in a vulnerable area of Washington DC with a 98% African American student population. I found it difficult to approach my students based on some assumptions they had about the Spanish language. For example many thought everyone who spoke Spanish was Mexican, others would say that African American people did not speak Spanish. These experiences forced me to reorganize my curriculum so that I would teach them not only Spanish, but also Latin American culture. Today, I am able to say that holistic approach is giving better results, and also helped improve behavioral issues in 70% of my classes.
