In 2012, the Six Nations Eco-Centre received a $125,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant that was channeled to the GRCF to help pay for wetland restoration features and earthen dykes. This work is helping bring biodiversity back and provides a great location for students to learn about the natural environment. “Our job is to make sure the land is here and useable for the next seven generations. During the last 20 years, things have changed for the better. They are not where they should be, but they are certainly moving in that direction. I’ve also seen a definite change in young people, who are more appreciative of the value of land and water.” -Paul General, Manager of the Six Nations Eco-Centre and wildlife officer in Ohsweken. trees planted to support restoration at Taquanyah 4 Enjoying nature Elora Cataract Trailway sponsor Wingrove Veterinary Hospital The 47-km Elora Cataract Trailway links Elora, Fergus, Belwood and Cataract at the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park. It is one of four multi-use rail-trails the GRCA owns and operates and it is part of the Trans Canada Trail system. Through the GRCF, groups and individuals sponsor a section of trail to help cover costs of upkeep for five years. Dr. Sabrina Piombo enjoys the outdoors and the trail. Her vet clinic, located between Guelph and Erin, has sponsored Kilometre 17. “I discovered the trail a few years ago and we go there regularly to walk and ride our bikes. I absolutely love it. The setting is beautiful and I’m impressed and very appreciative that this has been set aside and maintained for the community to use. My first date with my husband was in Belwood near the section of the trail that I have sponsored.” -Dr. Sabrina Piombo, owner of Wingrove Veterinary Hospital, Guelph/Erin. 17,000km length of the entire Trans Canada Trail system 6 Allan Holmes Scholarship First scholarship recipient Cailey McCutcheon The Allan Holmes Scholarship was created in 2012 with monies from an endowment fund set up by Allan Holmes, the CAO of the GRCA from 1991 until his retirement in 2000. Many others contributed to this fund after he passed away in 2011. The first recipient of this scholarship was Cailey McCutcheon, a Civil and Environmental Engineering student at the University of Waterloo. Her undergraduate design project looked at the effects of climate change on bridges spanning the Grand River, and her research for her masters degree will be applied to the Apps’ Mill reach of Whitemans Creek. 167 bridges have heritage significance in the Grand River watershed “The GRCF scholarship has meant a lot to me. Not only has it allowed me some financial freedoms that helped me to focus on my research, it has also shown that there is local interest in the research. It is important that the community is funding projects in this area and caring about the environment and resources so close to home.” -Cailey McCutcheon, Engineering Student 8 Flexibility for the future Undesignated gift for highest priorities Nelson Kraus 1.3 million projected population of the Grand River watershed by 2031 Undesignated contributions allow the GRCF to address the highest priorities in a flexible and timely way. Allocations from this fund are carefully considered by the board to achieve the greatest impact. In 2012 for example, the GRCA received more than $100,000 in undesignated contributions from the GRCF to advance conservation efforts in several areas. These included environmental education, rail-trails and care of natural areas. One contributor to this fund is Nelson Kraus, whose father settled in Waterloo and started Kraus Carpet Mills, which is still going strong. Nelson is a land developer in Waterloo who supports conservation. “I support the unrestricted fund to be a good neighbour and a good citizen. I have four children and five grandchildren and most of them live here. They — and everyone else — are going to benefit from the clean water and natural areas.” -Nelson Kraus, Tanem Developments Limited 10 Health & prosperity Community leaders helping conservation John Whitney 78 km Grand River trails connect Waterloo Region communities For commercial real estate broker John Whitney, natural areas are very important to the health and prosperity of communities and individuals. John is a lifelong resident of Waterloo Region and a geography graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University. His BA thesis focused on linear open space in urban areas — rivers and trails are excellent examples. He believes top-notch recreation in the outdoors adds to our quality of life. As the former Chair of Communitech, John thinks natural and recreational areas help attract and keep tech workers in this region. “The first thing on my mind is to get our communities to really understand water, rivers and open space. Then they will better understand how important it is to our health and wellbeing to have clean water, recreational opportunities and clean air.” -John Whitney, President and Broker of Record at Whitney Commercial Real Estate Services, Waterloo, a five generation company. 12 Best dam project 1,000 homes are powered by GRCA hydroelectric dams Parkhill Dam, Cambridge Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association When the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association approached GRCF they weren’t looking for just any conservation project. They wanted to innovate and get involved in an area that would yield long-term, tangible results. The result? In 2012, the aggregate community rallied to raise almost $250,000 to help bring hydroelectricity to Cambridge’s Parkhill Dam, kicking off with the Best Dam Gala in Ontario, several multi-year donors and a target to raise half a million dollars. GRCA’s hydroelectric dams provide a steady flow of revenue for a range of projects such as trail work, habitat enhancement, outdoor education and tree planting. “The industry sees real value in creating green solutions to put more resources into the conservation stream. Projects like this will create perpetual funding for the GRCA’s work.” –Moreen Miller, CEO, Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association 14 Greening the watershed Burford Tree Nursery Roger Davis The heart of the GRCA’s reforestation program lies in Brant County at the Burford Tree Nursery. This is where trees and shrubs are grown for reforestation projects throughout the Grand River watershed. Roger Davis has purchased trees from Burford for years. In 2012 he visited the nursery, asked the superintendent to show him what was needed, then made a significant donation. Thanks to Roger, a new building is going up in 2013 and a new traveling irrigation sprinkler system was purchased to keep the young trees healthy. “It means a lot to me to get this support. It helps the nursery, which is important to the GRCA’s tree planting program. Roger said he really feels that he has helped us out. He will see the new building go up and the traveler is a big help to this place.” -Bruce Graham, Burford Tree Nursery Superintendent 282,000 trees planted in the watershed in 2012 16 Thank you to those who have made an investment in our quality of life GRCF is grateful to the many donors who made donations and future commitments to the Your River, Your Life campaign, as well as to conservation partnerships and scholarships in 2012. Every effort has been made to ensure this list is up-to-date. We apologize for any errors or omissions. Community Foundations In 2011, the GRCF established a Grand River Conservation Fund at both the Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation and the Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation, to raise awareness and funds that support conservation projects undertaken by the GRCA. Planting trees is the right thing to do – not just for our family, but for the whole community. We’ve planted hundreds on our farm, which will grow with our daughters. Every year the GRCA plants thousands of trees, which will grow with all of us. -Alan Dale, past GRCA Chair, with wife Nathalie and daughters Olivia and Chloé 26 Financial overview - 2012 Revenue Expenditures 2012 2011 Receipted donations $684,377 $520,723 Disbursements to conservation projects* Non-receipted donations 479,284 193,112 Book & other merchandise sales 5,527 11,045 Special events and sponsorships 9,093 Investment income 2012 2011 $890,494 $566,109 Fundraising expenses 93,554 72,073 General expenses 32,093 30,996 16,661 Book purchases 1,037 6,541 72,744 22,847 Special events 0 0 0 0 Other expenses 440 0 $1,251,025 $764,388 $1,017,618 $675,719 Other income Total Total All funds held within GRCF are restricted internally or externally for specific projects, with the exception of one undesignated fund which is allocated by our Board of Directors for the highest conservation priorities. *Disbursements vary each year.
