2017 Trauma and Critical Care Symposium
This one-day continuing medical education activity is designed to provide physicians and other healthcare providers with current education and management strategies on a variety of topics focused on caring for critical
adult, pediatric and trauma patients.
Objectives
Adult
• Discuss the physiologic insults burn
injuries bring to a
patient
• Understand the
resuscitation and
early care of the
burn patient
• Illustrate the
mechanics and
principles behind
veno-venous ECMO and veno-arterial ECMO
• Demonstrate the benefits of an ECMO program to a trauma service
and the institution as a whole
• Learn the objectives of the bomb squad
• Medical consideration of explosive events and patients Education credit
Pediatric
• Review case studies of pediatric patients injured by guns
• Review common injury patterns in kids from firearms and nonpowder guns (BB guns, air rifles, paint guns)
• Review diagnosis and diagnostic difficulties in button battery ingestions; discuss management recommendations for and complications
of button battery ingestions/injuries
• Identify key components of a successful pediatric rehabilitation program
• Describe the importance of integrating habilitation and retraining
of developmental milestones during
pediatric rehabilitation
• Select situational-appropriate sedative and analgesic medications
• Trouble shooting during a procedure: intraprocedural monitoring
and reversal agents
Physicians: Wesley Medical Center is accredited by the Kansas Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Wesley designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of
their participation in the activity.
Nurses: Wesley Medical Center is approved as a provider of CNE by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering is approved for 8.5 contact

Wesley Medical Center is an approved long-term provider of continuing education by the Kansas Board
of EMS. Each technician is responsible for maintaining a record of their continuing education.

The symposium will be held in the Cessna Conference Center at Wesley Medical
Center, 550 N. Hillside, Wichita, Kan. (located at Central and Hillside).
Participants may park in the visitor parking garage (entrance is on Murdock St.)
and enter the hospital on the first floor. Cessna Conference Center is located on
your left.
Because the temperature in the meeting rooms can fluctuate, layered clothing
is suggested. Casual dress is encouraged.

Michelle Alletag, MD
Dr. Alletag received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas Southwestern Medical School. She specializes in Emegency Medicine - Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital Colorado
Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora.
Adam Kafka, MD
Dr. Kafka has been a physiatrist at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital
since 2009. He focuses on restoring maximum function lost through
injury, illness or disabling conditions. Dr. Kafka provides conservative,
non-surgical diagnosis and treatment of spine and orthopedic injuries.
In addition, he performs electromyography and nerve conduction studies that aid in the diagnosis of nerveand muscle disorders. He is board
certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Det. Long Nguyen
Mr. Nguyen is a detective with the Burglary Section/Bomb Squad of
the Wichita Police Department, where he has worked for more than
19 years. He also services with the 931st Security Forces Squadron as a
staff sergeant. He was in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1992-98 and
reenlisted with the Air Force Reserves in 2014.
Philip W. Smith, MD, FACS
Dr. Smith received his medical dgree from East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine. He served as a U.S. Navy
lieutenant in the Medical Corps and was a flight surgeon with the Naval
Medical Clinic in Quantico, Virginia. He completed his general surgery
residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga and is board certified in general surgery with added qualifications
in critical care. Dr. Smith completed a surgical critical care fellowship at
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and is an associate professor
on the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Department of
Surgery.
Beryl Yaghmai, MD
As a member of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the
Society of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Yaghmai is comfortable working
with children from neonates through young adulthood. She completed
her pediatric residency at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita and then
fulfilled a three-year pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Washington School of Medicine – Seattle Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
She speaks several languages including basic Spanish, Cantonese and
Mandarin Chinese. Dr. Yaghmai has participated in numerous research
projects and was honored with the Seattle Children’s Hospital – Pediatric
Critical Care Medicine Fellow Research Presentation Award in 2013.
