Continents are the largest landform on Earth. There are seven continents: North America, South America,
Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica. Oceans are the largest bodies of water on Earth. There are
four oceans: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Using a Compass and Poles to Find Places
A compass shows directions. The cardinal directions are: North, South, East, and West. The intermediate
directions are Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast. The directions on earth are based on the
POLES. The North Pole is the highest point on earth. The South Pole is the lowest point on earth. These
poles are imaginary places that humans placed on maps and globes to locate places. The equator is an
imaginary line around the middle of the earth. It divides the world into the northern half and southern half.
