Read the following passage and answer the question that follows in complete sentences.
Dangerous Winter Storms
Blizzards are treacherous winter storms that are a mixture of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low
visibilities. While heavy snowfalls and severe cold often accompany blizzards. Sometimes strong winds pick up snow that has
already fallen, creating blizzard conditions on the ground.
The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm which contains large amounts of snow, or blowing snow,
with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 mile for an extended period of time (at least 3 hours). When blizzard
conditions are expected, the National Weather Service will issue a "Blizzard Warning". When these conditions are not expected to
occur at the same time, but one or two of these conditions are predicted, a "Winter Storm Warning" or "Heavy Snow Warning" may
be issued.
Blizzard conditions often develop on the northwest side of an powerful storm system. The difference between the low
pressure in the storm and the high pressure to the west of the center of circulation, creates a tight pressure gradient, or difference in
pressure between two sections of the storm, which in turn results in very strong winds. These strong winds pick up snow from the
ground, or blow falling snow, creating low visibilities and the possibility for significant drifting of snow.
Can you infer why The National Weather Service categorizes different types of winter storms? Explain your reasoning.

Read the following poem and answer the question that follows on the next page.
Snow Day
Snow is falling to the ground
Piling up in enormous mounds
School is cancelled for the day
Children run outside to play
Snowballs are thrown in the air
No one has any care
About school-only fun
Because the day is a snowy one
Snowmen are stacked very
high
Their top hats almost skim the
sky
To make them round they must
pat
Then finish off with mittens
and hat
As the weather gets cold
The children are told
To come inside and eat
Hot chocolate with a couple
treats
Once the kids are done
They put on their gear for
some more fun
Some of them play around
While other kids just lay on the
ground
Another kid makes snow
angels
Until the dog named Bojangles
Ran through his masterpiece
But then the owner yelled
cease
After Bojangles
Ruined all the snow angels
Kids slid down the hill
'Til they were bitten by a chill
Almost over is the day
The children start to walk away
As snow falls, so does the sun
Time to go in, the day is done

Read the following article about the Arctic Fox, then answer the question on the next page .
Arctic Fox
The arctic fox is an extremely resilient animal that can survive
freezing Arctic temperatures as low as –58°F (-50°C) in the
icy open lands where it makes its home. It has furry soles,
short ears, and a short muzzle, which are essential
adaptations to the unfriendly climate. Arctic foxes live in
burrows, yet during intense blizzards they have been known to burrow into the snow to create
shelter.
Arctic foxes have striking white (sometimes blue-gray) coats that act as very effective winter
camouflage. The natural shades allow the animal to blend into the tundra's ever-present snow
and ice. When the seasons change, the fox's coat changes as well, adopting a brown or gray
appearance that offers cover among the summer tundra's rocks and plants.
These colorings help foxes to successfully hunt rodents, birds, and even fish. Yet, during the
harsh winter, their prey can be scarce. During these times, arctic foxes will follow the region's
premier predator, a polar bear, to eat the leftover scraps from its kills. Foxes also eat vegetables
when they are available.
The arctic fox’s thick tail aids with balance. Yet, the tail, or brush, is especially useful as warm
cover in cold weather.
According to the article, the arctic fox is resilient . What are some ways that an arctic fox can
be resilient? Use two details from the article to support your answer.
Read the passage and answer the question that follows.
A snowflake can be either a single ice crystal or an aggregation of ice crystals which falls through the Earth's lower
atmosphere. They begin as small crystals which change when microscopic super-cooled cloud droplets freeze.
Snowflakes also come in a variety of sizes and shapes and no two snowflakes are ever alike.
Using context clues, the word, aggregation means…
drifts down from clouds
a group of many
icicles
Read the passage and answer the question that follows.
An avalanche is a fast flow of snow down a sloping surface. Avalanches are typically generated in a starting zone from a failure in
the snowpack when the forces on the snow exceed its strength. The burden on the snowpack may be only due to gravity, in which
case failure may result either from weakening in the snowpack or a heavier load due to precipitation that has fallen. Avalanches that
occur in this way are called spontaneous avalanches. Avalanches can also be triggered in a variety of other ways such as skiers,
snowmobilers, animals, seismic activity, or even explosives.
According to the passage, the word burden most likely means…
forcing in an upwards manner
any kind of difficulty
something that is carried or held
