WEST COVINA — Operation Polar Winds aids Santa by
bringing Santa and toys to our
kids in area hospitals.
The Pasadena Police Air Operations Section and the Foothill Air Support Team (FAST)
have conducted a toy drive benefiting pediatric patients at Huntington Memorial Hospital,

and Citrus Valley Medical Center Queen of the Valley Campus.
Gifts were delivered by Santa
Claus and “elves” in green flight
suits who arrived by helicopter
and police cars.
On Thursday, December
20th, Santa and his helpers arrived at Citrus Valley Medical
Center, Queen of the Valley
Campus. They were joined by
management of the West
Covina Police Department. The
went to the 6th floor to pass out
toys to the kids. Many of the
children will not be home for
the holidays. A lot of the children were able to walk and see
Santa. Officer Dave Sifling has
very strong connections with
Santa and he made it possible
to have Santa show up at the
hospital. Some children were
unable to get out of bed, so
Santa made visits to the rooms
with some of the police officers to pass out some toys.
Nearly $5,000 dollars was
raised from contributions made
by employees and employee associations of the participating
FAST agencies. “This truly
demonstrates the care and compassion of the employees from
all of our agencies,” stated
Pasadena’s Police Chief Bernard
Melekian. “It is our honor as the
hosting and coordinating
agency to put this together with

the men and women of so many
other fine police departments.
But mostly it is our pleasure to
bring some joy into the lives of
the children at these hospitals
who won’t be home for Christmas”.
So, on Christmas Eve, when
the little ones hear the police
helicopters flying above their
homes, they can feel safe
knowing that on that night,
those police helicopters are
clearing the way in the sky so
Santa will have a safe flight with
his raindeer so he can deliver
those toys in time for Christmas morning. S p e c i a l

Volunteers Helped Santa Pass Out Toys in Azusa
By George Ogden
Azusa — A group of volunteers, in Azusa, including Mayor
Joe Rocha and Councilman
Robert Gonzales helped pass
out toy to families of nearly 200
children. The event was held
at Lee School in Azusa. Neither rain or shine would keep
the parents away from the opportunity of getting FREE toys
for their children. In fact the
rains did come and the parents
and kid ventured out and came
through the rain to have the
opportunity to get free toys for
the holidays.
One class room was filled
with all kinds of toys that were
donated for the toy give away.
The parents were allowed to
select what they wanted. The
were let in to make the selections in small groups. The first
ones in quickly went after the
larger more expensive items for
their kids.
The program had the parents
sign up ahead of time and to list
how many children that they
had. This determined how
many toys they could select.
The volunteers supplied bags so
parents who were selecting a
number of item could carry
them a little easier.
One lady stated, through an
interpreter, that she was happy
to get free toys for her kids.

Over all, the parents picked
up toys for around 200 chil-
dren. At the end, there was
nothing left and everyone was
happy with toy give away pro-
gram. This saves Santa a little
time as he had a very busy
schedule..

West Covina PD & Target Store Help Santa
By George Ogden
WEST COVINA — On December 24th, the West Covina
Police Department, along with
the Target Store in West Covina
hosted “Shop with a Cop” in
the early morning hours. The
West Covina Police selected 6
local children to take on a
Christmas shopping spree at the
Target Store at Eastland Shopping Center.
The children were pre-selected based on their needs and
challenges this Christmas season. Each child was allowed
to pick out clothing and toys
amounting to $300.00. Target
has agreed to pay the sales tax
to allow the children to spend
the entire $300.00. A West
Covina Police Officer shopped
with each child, helping the
kids with their selections and
helping make the child’s Christmas as enjoyable as they can.
The kids, Brianna and Rafael
Delgado, Jessie and Richard
Reyes, Miguel Aguilar and
Giovanni Hernandez joined the
officers on the shopping spree.
The kids were very selective
in picking things that they
needed. Some of the male officers needed a little assistance
from the female officers with
clothing selections for size and
matching for the kids. One
child wanted a professional
shopper’s opinion and asked
for a female officer to help him
and the male officer with selecting some clothing items, which
brought a few chuckles.
One parent, Mrs. Delgado,
who spoke about the program,
was very grateful to the officers, Target and the sponsors for
making this all possible. She
hopes that the program will
continue and she would like to
help assist with the program in
the future.

Sen. Bob Margett (RGlendora) visited with nearly
100 students at the Haynes Education Center at LeRoy Haynes
Center in La Verne recently
(Thursday, Dec. 13) for his
third annual holiday gift delivery. The gifts were part of some
10,000 gifts collected by the
Baldwin Park office of the California Highway Patrol through
church and school toy drives,
along with donations from
stores including Wal-Mart and
JAKKS in the City of Industry.
Sen. Margett also answered
questions from the students on
topics ranging from "what do
you do every day" to "what are
you doing to get art back in the
schools" and "is being a senator a stressful job." The senator covered a variety of topics
in his comments, including
pointers on developing themselves through education and
becoming good citizens. "I think
that's what you are doing here
at LeRoy Haynes," Margett
said.

on New Year's Eve, I'm sure we
will all have a tendency to have
some reflections and reminiscences about what has taken
place during the past twelve
months. We probably will also
have some anticipation and excitement about the year we are
saying "Hello" to. We wonder,
"What new events will it hold?"
As we turn the pages that tell
the story of our lives, we are
often surprised by the challenges and opportunities that
unfold as we open up the days
and weeks that seem to go all
too rapidly as we grow older.
Will we still be living in the
same house? Will we have a
new job? Will our family increase in numbers? Will we
make new friends? Will some
of them die or move away? Will

Its victories and woes,
We reminisce and reflect,
As it draws to a close.
Memories come flooding,
As we sing Auld Land Syne.
Dear old friends and places,
Come up into our mind.
We anticipate the New Year,
Expecting life's very best.
With joy and prosperity,
Hoping each day will be
blessed,
With new opportunities,
New challenges, new friends,
New strengths and new
abilities,
To cope with all new trends.
Only God knows the secrets,
Our blank calendar holds.
We know there will be surprises,
As each new day unfolds.
We look forward to the future,
With determination to strive,
To conquer each new obstacle,
Very grateful to be alive!
