From the Directors Desk…
2013 Summer Reading Club Round-Up
The summer was busy with patrons taking advantage of the
Library’s two summer reading clubs ; one club for the adults called
“Groundbreaking Reads” and one for the children, tweens, and
Young Adults called “Dig Into Reading.”
The adult summer reading club program ran from the end of June
to August 19th with 90 participants and an amazing 800 books read
over the summer. Those who joined the club received a special tote
bag and then submitted reviews of the books they read. For every
4 books read, participants’ names were put into a drawing to win a
Kindle, generously donated by the Friends of the Library. The lucky
winner who read twelve books this summer was frequent Library
user Lana Noone! Runner-up winners included Kym Caliguri, who
read 58 books, Jaclyn Franke Keller, who read 51 books and Janet
Carfora, who read 48 books. For all other reading club registrants
prizes included a notebook and pen, a cell phone holder, and a nylon
lunch bag. A special thanks to reference librarian Angela Hughes
for her hard work and enthusiasm this summer in running her 5th
successful adult reading club!
(Kindle winner, Lana Noone)
The Children’s Department ran their successful reading club - “Dig
Into Reading” for preschoolers through Young Adults. There were
a total of 466 youths who participated in this year’s club, with
4,201 books read,
7 4 p ro g r a m s
offered and 3,620
who attended
those programs.
For their efforts,
all youths who
participated,
received a bag
full of prizes. The
Children’s
Department had
their reading club party on August 23rd featuring the Green
Meadows Farm Petting Zoo. A good time was had by all! Again,
my thanks go to Children’s Department Head Faye Lieberman and
children’s librarians Diane Bolte Gregory and Barbara Thompson
for promoting the importance of reading to the children of Franklin
Square.
