ICT Lesson – Why was there a Revolution?
Pupils cut and paste a series of statements and place
them into the correct chronological order. They then
classify the information according to key categories
(see History & ICT handbook for full details)
5. The reign of terror
Look at why terror started, who main characters
involved were and whether they were still aiming
for the same outcomes as at the beginning of the
revolution. Pupils need to understand how the
revolution has changed and why.

Discuss if this is what original aims of revolution were.
French Revolution booklet p14-16. Pupils complete
activities based on it. Timeline on p54-55 of ‘Empires
and Citizens’ good to highlight how aim and tone of
revolution has changed. LA differentiated worksheets
available.
6. The emergence of Napoleon
Start by looking at the consequences of the Terror
and the state of France in 1795. Look at how
Napoleon came to power and what this meant for
the revolution. Opportunity for an in depth study
of Napoleon using a variety of sources, or a factfile
on him, or a timeline showing his coup.

‘How did Napoleon change France’ fact and source
sheet for a more in depth study (suitable challenge for
more able)
7/8. What did the revolution actually achieve?
Pupils gather evidence to prove that the revolution
did improve France. Search under headings
Government, legal, church, electoral, social and
economic reforms (keywords may need explaining
first). Discussion of whether everyone benefited.
Summary map showing effect of French
Revolution on other countries, discuss what this
tells us. Combine 2 activities to answer big
question of whether or not revolution mattered.
Can be done as an essay, speech A3 summary web
etc.
7/8. French Revolution booklet p10-16. Evidence for
improvements made by the revolution on p10-13. LA
will need guidance over which sources to use for each
area. Summary task in ‘Empires and Citizens’ p.56-7.
Can produce a cartoon strip showing the different
stages of the revolution and how the aims have
changed. LA can produce stills showing aims at
beginning and aims during terror and explain how these
have changed.
Writing frame to support LA in answering essay.
