What is their professional status?), - Company management of their impatriates (pre-arrival preparation, setting them up in France…), - How impatriates integrate into their new country. *www.paris21.tv is a web TV translated into 7 languages, aimed at foreigners living in France I - 2) Methodology and practical implementation The target audience and the sample size: - The target audience this year: employees in major companies, managers, self-employed professionals and foreign businessmen working in France, aged 18 years and older - As such, we asked, overall: - 770 foreign employees or managers working in France (aged 18 years or older) 3 www.netsbe.fr How we collected the information Taking into account the target we wished to study, we set up an on-line survey in both English and French: - on the Mondissimo web portal, aimed at expatriates and impatriates: www.mondissimo.com. on the www.paris21.tv website (web TV aimed at foreigners living in Paris) on the Paris Développement website http://www.investinparis.com/ In this way, visitors to these three sites were invited to take part in the survey Also, they were invited using an invitation message placed behind a recruitment banner on the homepage of www.mondissimo.com, www. paris21.tv and www.investinparis.com Recruitment was also aided by HR Directors who passed on the survey to their impatriate employees. Sample size and how we collected the information (3/3) In terms of recruitment effectiveness, this year 1570 people accessed the questionnaire thanks to, among other things, the visibility of the banner on the mondissimo.com and paris21.tv homepage from 09/12/2013 to 11/09/2014. - The survey took place from the 09/12/2103 to the 11/09/2014, over 9 consecutive months, in order to incorporate the most diverse possible group of respondents. 4 www.netsbe.fr Practical implementation of the on-line questionnaire using a banner 1. Insertion of a recruitment banner on a site’s homepage, asking visitors to fill in an on-line survey 2.a) The visitor accepts to take the questionnaire: The interviewee is directed to the questionnaire and fills it in 2.b) The visitor refuses to take the questionnaire or does not meet the survey criteria. In this case, they return to the site 3. Result processing and analysis 5 www.netsbe.fr II - DETAILED RESULTS 6 www.netsbe.fr II - Part 1 : Who are these impatriates* working in France? * expatriate, replacement or locally operating foreign employees – managers – self-employed professionals working in France Note : More than half of all impatriates are over 41 years old. Note : Impatriates are mostly male. 7 www.netsbe.fr Note : The impatriates in France are mostly European, for one in two impatriates, and in second place are the North Americans (16%). 8 www.netsbe.fr Note : Where impatriates come from reflects their nationality, with 56% coming from Europe and 19% from North America. 9 www.netsbe.fr Note : 8 out of 10 impatriates in France live with their partner. 10 www.netsbe.fr Note : More than half of all impatriates have at least one child under 18 years old. 11 www.netsbe.fr Note : The majority of impatriates live with their family in France. 12 www.netsbe.fr Note : Almost 4 in 10 impatriates met their partner in France. 13 www.netsbe.fr Note : More than one in two impatriates working in France is an employee, the vast majority of which are employed by a French company. 14 www.netsbe.fr Note : More than one in two impatriates are executives or managers. 15 www.netsbe.fr Length of your stay in France Note : More than one in two impatriates will spend ten or more years in France. As such, as with French employees based* abroad, we can see the impact of local contracts which extend the length of foreign work placements. We can also see in this segment several entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals. * source : Survey « Expatriés, votre vie nous intéresse… » 2013 16 www.netsbe.fr Note : More than one in two impatriates have been living in France for more than three years. 17 www.netsbe.fr Note : We can see that half of these impatriates have work contracts longer than five years- this is the result of local contracts. 18 www.netsbe.fr Median annual income of impatriates working in France Note : Four in ten impatriates earn more than 60,000€ per year. If we compare this with French expatriates abroad, we can conclude that foreign employees in France are less likely to earn more than 76,000€/year. Essentially, according to the “Expatriates, tell us about your life” survey conducted by Mondissimo in 2013, 1 in 3 French people working abroad fall into this wage bracket. Students and “unemployed” fall into the category which do not earn a salary. 19 www.netsbe.fr Note : 7 out of 10 impatriates are employed by a French company. 20 Canada 0,111111111 GB 0,111111111 Italie 0,111111111 Japon 0,111111111 Corée 0,222222222 US 0,333333333 www.netsbe.fr II - Part 2: How did they end up here? Installation Note : Fulfilling a mission and the attraction of living in France were the leading motivations for impatriates. We can see that fulfilling a mission was only a motivation for 37% of French expatriates (source: “Expatriates, tell us about your life…” 2013). 21 www.netsbe.fr Note : Almost four in ten impatriates were helped by their company to move to France. It seems that French companies take more care to settle their impatriates than their expatriates, of which only 22% received this sort of assistance or full move organization (source: “Expatriates, tell us about your life…” 2013) 22 www.netsbe.fr Note : Most impatriates sensed no particular worry in France other than increased taxation or an economic crisis which is still causing problems… 23 www.netsbe.fr Note : One in two impatriates receive accommodation cost help from their employer and 23% are even housed free of charge by their company. 24 www.netsbe.fr Note : The majority of impatriates pay for additional charges relating to their accommodation such as the deposit, household insurance and settlement costs. 25 www.netsbe.fr Note : Successfully completing French administrative procedures was a major practical difficulty for 8 out of 10 impatriates. 26 www.netsbe.fr Note : Whether it was securing a guarantee or deciphering the rental contract, 6 out of 10 impatriates had difficulties 27 www.netsbe.fr Note : Dealing with Social Security is not just a problem for the French; it’s also a challenge for 6 in 10 impatriates… It doesn’t look like dealing with telephone operators is very simple either… 28 www.netsbe.fr Note : For 1/3 of impatriates, school fees are paid by their employer, and 21% send their children to state schools. 29 www.netsbe.fr Note : Almost 8 in 10 impatriates chose their own bank. 30 www.netsbe.fr II - Part 3: How are they integrating now they’re here? Note : 72% of impatriates employees were happy with the welcome they received in their company. 31 www.netsbe.fr Note : Almost 9 out of 10 impatriates complain that their company’s procedures are poorly conceived and therefore poorly monitored… Here we can see Anglo-Saxon pragmatism in action, which enables them to create good procedures and above all follow them… this is a French problem which often hinders French companies from developing on an international level… the administration is also cited as a problem, being too cumbersome or lacking in communication. 32 www.netsbe.fr Note : Almost one third of impatriates consider French people to be unwelcoming. 33 www.netsbe.fr Note : 8 out of 10 impatriates think that French people are arrogant and unfriendly… 34 www.netsbe.fr Note : Open-mindedness and generosity are not hallmarks of the French according to impatriates… Only their enjoyment of “good times” is recognized by the majority. 35 www.netsbe.fr Note : The vast majority of impatriates (72%) have succeeded in making a lot of French friends in spite of all their faults… 36 www.netsbe.fr Note : Impatriates tend to meet French people mostly though their work or through people living nearby. 37 www.netsbe.fr Note : Communication in the local language and living costs represent the biggest difficulties in terms of settling in. Only 20% have had no difficulties. 38 www.netsbe.fr II - Part 4: Overall satisfaction of foreign impatriates’ life in France (report) Note : A quarter of impatriates are not satisfied with their life in France… In comparison, only 5% of French people living abroad are unhappy (source: “Expatriates, tell us about your life…” 2013) 39 www.netsbe.fr Note : It looks like the quality of life, the food and the culture are the 3 major strong points of life in France… As for the overall sense of safety, it only convinced 15% of the impatriates… 40 www.netsbe.fr Note : 8 out of 10 impatriates criticize the quality of human contact in France… 41 www.netsbe.fr Note : Finally, 30% of the impatriates declare that they never want to return to their country of origin… a result which is however lower than French people abroad, of whom 37% never want to come back home! (source: “Expatriates, tell us about your life…” 2013) 42 www.netsbe.fr Note : “Liberty”… Of the three words which make up the French national motto, this one corresponds best to the impatriates who live here… 43
