Learning Objective
• To use imaginative and exciting language to engage the audience using appropriate
writing structures.
Success Criteria
• The group or class produces an engaging story that has multiple outcomes depending on
the choices the reader makes.
Preparation before the project
• Review existing ‘interactive storytelling’ resources – i.e. ‘fighting fantasy’ books.
• Trylife.tv.
• Choose Your Own Adventure – http://www.cyoa.com/
• Search online using key terms like ‘gamebooks’, ‘collaborative storytelling’ or ‘interactive fiction’.
• Obtain an example from a fighting fantasy book – these can be previewed on sites like Amazon.
Task
Lesson 1
• Learners are to work in groups of 4 to 6.
• Each group must propose an outline for their story including the following details:
a) Main character(s) b) Location.
• Problem / situation – i.e. What is the story about?
• End goal.
• What the character needs to do to achieve the goal.
• What can stop the character achieving the goal.

Zombie Night
• What happens if the character achieves the goal.
• What happens if the character does not achieve the goal.
• Each group must present their story idea in whichever format they choose (spider diagram,
storyboard, verbal description).
Lesson 2
• Learners create a mind map or flow chart to plan out the main scenes and decisions in
their story.
Lesson 3
• Learners start to write the scenes – they will need to organise who is going to write what
and structure the wiki accordingly.
Lesson 4
• Learners develop their stories by reviewing each other’s work. Each group should elect a
leader to co-ordinate overall production of the story.
Lesson 5
• Learners refine their stories and add features such as pictures, sound and video to enhance
the immersive experience for their game.
Lesson 6
• Learners play each other’s games and write a review using the blog.
• Learners should comment on the following: Describe the main characters and the plot,
the aim of the story etc. What features have they used to immerse the reader in the story?
• Give examples of imaginative and descriptive language used.
• Finish with a sentence summarising how well they think the story has achieved its aims
and how it could be improved.
