By pooling the information contained within the Directory I trust that it becomes a valuable tool to all those within church and faith-based communities throughout Northern Ireland in their work and missionary endeavours. It is vitally important that churches and those working in the wider faith sector are able to easily access information on potential funding sources that can assist with worthwhile projects and proposals aimed at helping local communities. Churches play an enormously positive role within our society in Northern Ireland and their contribution to our Province spans many generations. I take this opportunity again to pay tribute to Diane for all her hard work on behalf of the people of Northern Ireland. Diane has worked tirelessly to help thousands of constituents across the Province and this Directory is the latest example of how she continues to be Northern Ireland’s voice in Europe. INTRODUCTION DIANE DODDS MEP Faith communities are often reluctant to apply for funds. Some believe that only education establishments, community groups, charities and businesses are likely to have success. This Directory shows that such thinking is flawed and it presents us with excellent funding bodies, European and local, who are particularly interested in promoting projects that have a faith-based agenda. Such information is most encouraging since it shows that a wide range of activities is eligible for funds. This is a great opportunity for people to ensure that the money that is available in these funds is put to good use in promoting people-centred faith projects in Northern Ireland The Directory is not an exhaustive list of all available monies. It can only provide an initial point of contact which will direct the applicant to the most appropriate resources. Most faith groups are organised on national, regional and local bases. Bequests and grants are available to specific geographical and administrative areas so it is worth checking with your organisation’s leaders from the outset. I hope you find this resource useful, and please contact my office at any time for further assistance. RT. HON. PETER D ROBINSON MLA First Minister Leader, Democratic Unionist Party 2 DIANE DODDS MEP Non-Attached Member of the European Parliament Dodds Faith Funding AW 17/11/12 15:50 Page 4 FOREWORD BY LORD BANNSIDE MEP FOR NORTHERN IRELAND 1979-2004 We live in a society that is increasingly secular in outlook and where the Lord Jesus Christ, His church and other faith-based organisations are marginalised and mocked.Yet despite this continued attack on the things of God, we look to the words of Christ in Matthew 9:37 when he tells us ‘The harvest truly is plenteous’. While the labourers are few in these days, His call is for us to show love for our neighbour and to “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” To do this requires, amongst other things, sufficient funds. As we know much of what is available flows from the coffers of Lottery proceeds, and for many faith groups to accept these funds would not be consistent with their beliefs. That is why this Directory of funding sources will be an invaluable tool to groups across Northern Ireland, as they seek to draw down additional funds to carry out His mission and work. I commend Diane on this initiative and her excellent work as MEP for Northern Ireland. THE FAITH SECTOR AND ITS ROLE IN HELPING GOVERNMENT TO REACH THOSE IN OR AT RISK OF POVERTY The Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland, believes that there is a very critical role to be played by the faith sector in developing strategic partnerships with Government to help deliver practical approaches to tackling poverty. For this reason, the Minister funds the Faith Forum for Social Development. He believes that working closely with partners not directly involved in benefits advice, such as churches and faith-based groups, presents opportunities to reach those who are at risk of poverty and who could be vulnerable. Churches are a critical component in society and are at the coal face of the issues affecting communities. No better partners exist to help Government ensure that those most in need are accessing their full entitlement to benefits and other Government services and support. The Minister’s plans for the 2012/13 Benefit Uptake Programme will test fresh approaches to reaching people with unclaimed entitlement by building new and stronger partnerships with civic, church and faith-based groups. LORD BANNSIDE Member of the European Parliament 1979-2004 and former First Minister of Northern Ireland 4 The Thriving Life Church in Newtownards and its Foodbank is one of a number of non-advice sector partners with which the Social Security Agency is engaging to improve benefit uptake through promotion, referrals and specific locally-run benefit uptake clinics. Another example is the Lisburn City Council’s pilot Benefit Uptake Programme where all churches and faith-based groups in the Downshire electoral ward will promote benefit uptake. They will refer others needing specialist advice to clinics being held locally. Churches operating in Neighbourhood Renewal Areas and Areas at Risk across Northern Ireland often play a very valuable role with programmes they run in such areas. Local DSD offices would be happy to discuss with local churches what assistance may be available to them for programmes directly meeting the Department’s objectives in those specific areas. Minister McCausland wants all aith-based groups to become engaged with the Department whether it is on local Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships, Benefit uptake or helping ensure the connections exist between vulnerable citizens and agencies such as the Social Security Agency or the Housing Executive. There is no cost to them and only benefits to be gained by those most in need. This is a non-departmental, public body and is sponsored by the Department for Social Development (DSD).The vision is for a dynamic and well-governed charities sector in which the public has confidence, underpinned by the effective delivery of a regulatory and advisory role. Currently, there is a new legislative amendment to the Charities Act (NI) 2008 being progressed through the NI Assembly. This will allow the registration of Northern Ireland’s estimated 7,000-10,000 charities, due to begin from late in 2013 and publish the register of charities. The production of the register of charities will allow the Commission to definitively designate organisations as charitable in law, a new development in Northern Ireland. All charities are required under the Charities Act (NI) 2008 to register with the Commission, including charities promoting religion. Approximately, 50 new trusts or foundations are formed each year. Trusts and Foundations have a particular focus – to financially support various initiatives and projects which are compatible with their key aims and objectives. Usually the Trust or Foundation reflects the interests of their founders and trustees so it is a good idea to find out what type of projects they fund by checking their website and looking at what they have supported in the past. They may also be specific as to what geographical areas they work within e.g. UK or worldwide. Sometimes trustees ask for an application form to be completed but often it is by letter. FOR YOUR ORGANISATION . . . WRITING THE LETTER OF APPLICATION . . . Find out about the Trust or Foundation using the internet e.g.their aims, eligibility of organisations, past projects, typical funding amounts, when and how to apply. Think about the people who need to be involved in the application from the start and start talking to them. • Use headed paper and keep the application letter to 1 or 2 A4 pages. Contact: Sir S Sternberg,Trustee Star House, 104/108 Grafton Road, London NW5 4BA T: 020 7431 4200 SIR JAMES ROLL CHARITABLE TRUST This Trust mainly supports projects around the promotion of mutual tolerance in major world religions within the UK. • Sample Grants: £1,000 - £10,000 Contact: Mr N T Wharton,Trustee 5 New Road Avenue, Chatham, Kent ME4 6AR T: 01634 830111 20 You might want to talk to a group who the trust or foundation has funded in the past. Contact and talk to the funder, if they accept telephone calls or will meet with you. People give to people ... so personal contact is very important. Research their Trustees – what are their backgrounds and main interests? Decide who will be the central contact for your organisation and what role others can play to support them. Ensure your project is not deemed to be a statutory responsibility of central or local government otherwise it is unlikely to be funded. • Use a computer to word process the letter using a font such as Calibri 11. • Keep the funder’s main aims close to you as you write so that you tie in with their aims. Use some of their “buzz” words in your application. • Personalise the letter by using the contact person’s name i.e.Dear Mrs Adamson. • Assume the Trust or Foundation knows nothing about your organisation and what it does. You might include in your first paragraph when it was formed, size, geographical location and how it is managed e.g.committee. If there is a connection with the fund, mention this too. • The second paragraph needs to summarise your challenge and what you need. Avoid jargon and acronyms. 21 Dodds Faith Funding AW 17/11/12 15:50 • Use bullet points to help the trustees and include a few statistics or quotations from source documents such as your annual report, audit from your local council, quotations from church leaders, etc. • Now be more specific mentioning your key challenge and what you will achieve if you are funded. Be positive e.g.“We will ... maximise, assist, decrease, expect, and increase the numbers attending by % ...”The funder will be very interested in who and how people will benefit from your project. Add more details here not just broad terms such as “young people”. • For the budget you are requesting, find out what your funder’s policy on core costs such as salaries, overheads, transport, etc. For the amount you need, prepare a modest budget rather than inflated figures. If you have volunteers involved in the project, include “in kind expenses” to show that there is good will too. • If you intend to raise funds from other sources such as events include brief details. 22 Page 22 • You will want to assure the funder that you will manage the project by setting up a clear monitoring and evaluation system over the time period. Your committee will be part of this and the project should be a standard item on the agenda. • Thank the funder for their time and sign the letter giving your role and day-time contact details. • Leave it for a day or two – in case, you remember something helpful to include. It is also a good idea to ask someone else to read especially someone who does not know your organisation well. WAITING ON A DECISION • Other than acknowledging receipt, funders normally do not welcome being contacted to ask about progress of applications. “Since contacting Diane and other local MLAs we have been able to see how many more opportunities there are for churches to apply for funding, especially through Trusts and Foundations. This publication will be a great help to our church and we encourage other churches and faith based organisations in these difficult financial times to take the time to find out more about how private and public funding can make a difference.” “This Directory is a unique source of potential funding for Christian organisations and will be of immense value to churches and para-church organisations. As one passionately involved in "Churches Together" in Ballynahinch and seeing the value of a collaborative approach to outreach and care in our community this information is very helpful. The detailed advice on how to make an application for funding is advantageous to both sides of the equation; applicants will be clearer on how to apply and funders will receive better informed applications to consider. The Directory will definitely make a difference for good.” KIRSTY ATKINSON GRANSHAW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (PICTURED WITH HAJARA, UGANDA) DR HADDEN WILSON FORMER BAPTIST PASTOR AND MEMBER OF NORTHERN IRELAND EDUCATION AND TRAINING INSPECTORATE • If you receive a refusal letter, then you can politely ask for feedback if a contact name is passed to you. You can check if you can apply again. THANKING FUNDERS If you are successful, it is good practice to acknowledge the funder. This might be through actions such as – • Inviting them to a public launch or church meeting; • Ensure you get a receipt of posting or acknowledgement if posting the letter. • Mounting a plaque in an appropriate building; • If you need to include referees, please talk to them and obtain their permission before you submit. • Sending photos of the project as it develops to the funder to put on their website and you should provide a link on your church website of their details; • Ensuring they are invited to any celebration of the project on completion. 23 Dodds Faith Funding AW NOTES 17/11/12 15:50 Page 24 FEEDBACK FORM If you wish to attend further Funding Workshops and be included on a regular mailing list, please complete details below and return to Diane’s office at: Diane Dodds MEP, Garvey Studios, Longstone Street, Lisburn, BT28 1TP Organisation: Your Role: Mr/Mrs/Miss/Other: First Name: Surname: Address: Postal Code: Your Email address: Day Telephone Number: Mobile Telephone Number: 24 25 Dodds Faith Funding AW 17/11/12 15:50 Page 26 I am interested in attending a future workshop on “Improving Your Funding Application” (please tick) OTHER FUNDING DIRECTORIES BY DIANE DODDS MEP You are also invited to detail any specific Funding Query below and we will respond to you as soon as possible: FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS AND NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS 32 PAGE BROCHURE | 42 FUNDERS FUNDING FOR BUSINESSES 24 PAGE BROCHURE | 44 FUNDERS AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD FROM www.DianeDodds.co.uk 26 TELEPHONE: 028 9266 7733 EMAIL: [email protected] Dodds Faith Funding AW 17/11/12 15:51 Page 28 In preparing this directory, care has been taken has been taken to ensure accuracy at the time of print.
