THE WHISKEY REBELLION The Whiskey Rebellion was the most serious challenge to the Constitution during Washington’s presidency. Congress levied a tax on whiskey. Farmers in Pennsylvania who depended on whiskey for trade, refused to pay the tax. Washington sent federal troops to stop the rebellion. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT What would have happened if Washington had NOT taken a strong stand in support of the Constitution? The Constitution would have become meaningless How is this rebellion different from Shays’ Rebellion? Shays’ showed weakness, Whiskey showed strength Westward Expansion Westward Expansion This area was now secured by Americans. 1790: Washington’s first attack was defeated. 1791: Washington’s second attack was defeated. 1794: Washington’s third attack was victorious. Third attack called the Battle of Fallen Timbers because of all of the trees laying on the ground that were struck down by a storm. FRENCH REVOLUTION French citizens started a revolution against their own king. France helped us, but Britain is now an important trading partner. Countries such as Britain and Spain declared war on France. U.S. decided that the best thing to do was to stay neutral. Americans were asked to choose sides. Thousands died in the French Revolution including the king and queen. Jay’s Treaty BRITISH FORTS Jay’s Treaty U.S. treaty with Britain. Britain gave up forts in Ohio Valley where Native Americans were launching attacks against Americans. U.S. stopped helping France move goods across the ocean. Treaty of San Lorenzo “Pinckney’s Treaty” Treaty of San Lorenzo “Pinckney’s Treaty” Treaty signed with Spain.
