2016 YEAR AHEAD
Message from the Executive Director
To advance our understanding of the key issues driving the
transformation of the electric power sector, the Institute for
Electric Innovation (IEI) will focus on three key initiatives in
2016:
¡¡ Thought Leaders Speak Out book series
¡¡ Powering the People 2016 – IEI’s annual celebration of
innovation in the electric power sector
The Transition to a
Clean Energy Future
Lisa Wood
Executive
Director
¡¡ The new National Dialogue Series
These initiatives will focus on: the transition to a clean energy future, the
evolving digital and distributed grid, and the individualization of customer
services.

Thought Leaders Speak Out Book Series:
Top 10 Trends
In December 2015, IEI published Thought Leaders Speak Out: Key Trends
Driving Change in the Electric Power Industry, the first book of a three-part
series that includes short essays from key industry executives. The first volume
focused on three major trends driving change: the transition to a clean energy future, the digital and distributed grid, and individualized customer services.

IEI will release Thought Leaders Speak Out Volume II at the EEI Annual Convention in
June. And, IEI will release Volume III in October. Taken together, the three Thought Leaders Speak Out Volumes will identify the top ten trends driving the ongoing transformation of the electric power industry, and will be IEI’s contribution to the larger national
conversation on energy policy.

Powering the People
March 17, 2016, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Washington, DC: 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm
(Held in conjunction with the EEI Spring Board and Chief Executive Meetings)
Powering the People, IEI’s signature event, is an annual celebration of innovation in the electric power industry. In 2016, Powering the People will feature
TED-style talks and dialogues with electric utility and technology company
executives, policymakers, regulators, and other key stakeholders. This year’s
program will focus on three areas:
1. Smart Cities. Collaboration between utilities, municipal leaders, and technology companies is crucial to achieving a fully integrated smart city.
2. Digital & Distributed Grid. As the grid becomes more digital and distributed, integrating and enabling more distributed energy resources and
new devices in homes and businesses, what are the challenges and opportunities?
3. Individualized Customer Services. As the grid becomes more digital and
distributed, customization of electricity services continues to grow. How
are utilities creating individualized services to meet changing customer
needs?

IEI Utility Innovation Team
Site Visits
In 2016, IEI will be broadening its Roundtable
membership to include technology companies
engaged in data analytics, renewable energy,
storage, and microgrids. Membership is limited to
technology companies that are working effectively
with electric utilities.
In 2016, IEI will visit “innovation teams” at five
electric utilities. These visits will help identify
key technology trends, frame industry issues for
conversation, and identify examples of successful
technology innovation implementation across the
industry.

About the Institute for Electric Innovation
The Edison Foundation Institute for Electric Innovation focuses on advancing the
adoption and application of new technologies that will strengthen and transform
the power grid. IEI’s members are the investor-owned electric utilities that represent about 70 percent of the US electric power industry. The membership is
committed to an affordable, reliable, secure, and clean energy future.
IEI promotes the sharing of information, ideas, and experiences among regulators, policy makers, technology companies, thought leaders, and the electric
power industry. IEI also identifies policies that support the business case for the
adoption of cost-effective technologies.
IEI is governed by a Management Committee of electric industry Chief Executive
Officers. In addition, IEI has a Strategy Committee made up of senior electric
industry executives and a select group of technology company executives on its
Technology Partner Roundtable.
