MEETINGS:
Thursdays, Noon,
Holiday Inn Hotel
by Buffy Bowman
Cheers to all my fellow Rotarians from the Riverside
Golf Club! We had yet another wonderful meeting. Terry
Beard did a fine job keeping his invocation short yet
meaningful and hats off to Tom Swearingen for a creative Ode
to the Turkey sung to the tune of America the Beautiful. We were
very fortunate to have had several guests this week including
Susan Houser, a citizen who had seen our ad in the Sunday Oregonian
(kudos to the Publicity Committee) and was interested in our program since she had
lived in Turkey for a time. Other guests included John Howell, Megan Kinohl, Alan
Kravitz, Lee Mashado, Jim Linch, Gary Scott, and Richard Ransom.
This week’s spotlight Rotarian was Pam VanAusdle. Like many Rotarians, Pam comes
from a family of Rotarians. Her parents were members in Roseburg, her hometown.
She jokes that she finally settled into her life and enjoys a career in accounting and
bookkeeping. Pam specialized in getting her clients prepared to meet their CPA,
checking the numbers and making sure all the supporting data is in place. Having
served on many different committees, her favorite Rotary activities are Rebuilding
Together (Christmas in April), and the Foster Children’s events. She has served as
the Youth Exchange Committee Chair (you go girl!) and is currently the Co-chair
for RYLA. She is also actively assisting us on the Social Committee and the Auction
Committee. Considering all that she does, I don’t think it’s fair to hold the fact that
she is a U of O Duck against her.
ANOUNCEMENTS
As usual we had many announcements regarding upcoming events. Pete Maring
reminded us that the wine sale closes October 13th. Hurry up and get your orders in
since the proceeds will help supply the spirits for this year’s auction! Larry Salimena
is organizing a troupe to attend the 10/18, PSU game against Sacramento and the goal
is to have 40 attendees. Dave Malcolm is pursuing getting money to help with a bicycle
drive for Portland area children. And I announced with urgency our need to step up
the item solicitation for the auction. According to our Procurement Chair Brad Magee,
we are about 75% SHORT of our goal. The auction is only a month away folks!
GUEST SPEAKER
This week’s presentation was a special treat. Dale Dobbins introduced Dr. Doyle
Slater from LaGrande. Dr. Slater and his wife were the first recipients of Rotary’s Visiting
Professor Grant. They spent 5 months teaching in Turkey and then a couple of
months traveling around the country. We were able to see a fantastic slide show of
the country. They also had an excellent array of Turkish goods on display. Turkey is
the only Muslim (99%) country ruled by a democratic system (Israel is the only
other democratic society in the area). Although I knew the Muslim faith followed
the teaching of the Koran, I didn’t realize that it also holds great faith in the books
of the Old Testament. The country considers itself European, not Mediterranean,
and takes great pride in their growth and political advancement under the leadership
of Attaturk. Interestingly, the Kurds represent about half of parliament. Something
else I found interesting is that rent is significantly cheaper (one or two bedrooms at
$125 a month), but gas is about twice as much, $4 a gallon! This historical land houses
about 70 million people and is geographically twice the size of Oregon. [Reporter Note:
I feel badly that my report can’t really do justice to the presentation. To look at the photos
and the items that the Slaters brought back with them and think that it came from the
birthplace of democracy, or to be told that I was looking at the entrance to Cleopatra’s
and Mark Anthony’s dwelling in a city established 5 thousand years before Christ is not
something I can put down on paper very well]. If any of you are interested in catching
this presentation, I know that Dr. Slater and his wife are making tours to other clubs
in our district and I am sure Dale or someone on the Program Committee could put
you in touch with them!

FROM
We need your help in getting the word out for this
years auction! Richard Knox will begin
selling auction tickets at $65 per
person or $60 per person if you buy
a table of 8 or more. This discount is
given with the incentive to invite
more non-EPRC Rotarians to the
event. Unfortunately, two Rotarians
are not permitted to join in the
purchase of one table at the
discounted price. But you can still sit
together, and the MAC Club will be providing the
highest quality cuisine and top-notch service.
Things to Ponder...
¶ Can you cry under water?
¶ If money doesn’t grow on trees then why do banks have branches?
¶ Why do you have to “put your two cents in” but it’s only a penny
for your thoughts”? Where’s the extra penny going?
¶ Why does pizza come in a square box?
¶ If you drink Pepsi at work in the Coke factory, will you get fired?
¶ When I was young we used to go “skinny dipping”, now I just go
“chunky dunk”.
¶ Wouldn’t it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could
simply press ‘Ctrl Alt Delete’ and start all over?
¶ Why is it our children can’t read a Bible in school, but they can in
prison?
If raising children was going to be easy,
it never would have started with
something called labor.
