SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK(ING SPOT)!
What do these things have in common? They are some of the innovative ways the Hudson TMA used to
get our message across to the public about making smarter commuter
choices. Welcome to the winter issue
of Getting You There.
The Park (ing) Day & Smart Workplaces Wrap Up!.
You may have seen something unexpected on a few Hudson County streets this fall.
September 17th was Park(ing) Day, a global event that temporarily
transformed everyday parking spots into public parks, social spaces,
and—in one case—a playhouse for “Shakespeare in the Park.”

“The event involved the arts community in promoting our message,”
says Hudson TMA Director Jay DiDomenico. “We knew that a little
drama and a rapier fight would get the passerby’s attention so
the TMA can advocate for a greater use of alternate means of
transportation. It provided the spectators an opportunity to think
about how they travel and its impact on the environment.”
Through Park(ing) Day, the TMA was able to outreach to an audience
of over 600. Spectators were left with a little literature and a heightened
awareness about how they can reduce pollution and congestion by
choosing mass transit or even carpooling.
To park or not to park…? “The Bard” helps Hudson County think green on Park(ing) Day.
THERE ARE 70 SMART WORKPLACES IN HUDSON COUNTY…
IS YOURS ONE OF THEM?
Park(ing) Day is a playful way
to fuel change in commuting
practices, but when the TMA
partners with employers based
in Hudson County, it’s serious
business. On October 29, seventy
companies throughout Hudson
County were acknowledged for
their work by becoming New Jersey
Smart Workplaces in 2010.
Smart Workplace awards organizations for implementing programs
that provide and promote commuting alternatives for their employees,
thereby reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.
Thomas A DeGise, Hudson County Executive
More than 70 Hudson County companies became Smart Workplaces in 2010, including Goldman Sachs & Co., Tropicana, Liberty
Science Center, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, UBS, New Jersey
City University, Hyatt Regency and Meadowlands Hospital, just to
name a few.
The awards were bestowed at the Hudson County Plaza where
Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise gave the keynote,
stating that, “It’s companies like these that are helping make us
the pride of New Jersey, and New Jersey a national leader in
eco-friendly commuting.”
Was your company named a Smart Workplace? It can be. Visit

YOUR OLD BIKE CAN GIVE SOMEONE A NEW START
Got an old bike taking up space in your garage? One you or your kids have outgrown,
or one that just doesn’t work anymore?
Donate it to the Hudson TMA to be serviced, cleaned-up, and given to disadvantaged
adults who will be able to use the bike as a means to travel to work. Your unused bicycle
can help someone else enjoy a cleaner, more environmentally friendly commute, which
is good for everyone!
PM: The shuttle operates ONE WAY ONLY
beginning at the Harrison PATH Station at
Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard, proceeds
north to Kearny Avenue ending at Garden
Terrace and Ridge Road, North Arlington.
The Kearny Commuter Shuttle service is part of a traffic reduction plan for Kearny and Harrison,
operating along Kearny Avenue to the Harrison PATH station during AM and PM rush hours only.
Service will not be provided on Saturdays, Sundays, or major holidays including New Year's Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, July 4th,
Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Financing for this program is provided by the Federal Highway Administration.

LOOKING FOR AN
EASIER, MORE
AFFORDABLE WAY
TO GET TO WORK?
It’s the right time to leave the car
at home and take the train, ferry,
or bus instead.
Not only will you enjoy a more relaxing
ride to work and back, but—with gas prices
constantly on the rise—one that’s more
affordable, too.
(Exact Fare Required)
PATH riders know—riding the train is a breeze,
but getting to and from the train can be a different
story. For Harrison PATH station riders, however,
getting there and back is easier than ever.
The Kearny Shuttle is now open for business,
operating during peak rush hour periods from the
Arlington Loop in North Arlington, through Kearny
along Kearny Avenue, through Harrison along Frank
E. Rodgers Boulevard, and ending at the Harrison
PATH station.
The shuttle not only provides easy access to the
Harrison PATH, but also serves to reduce carbon
emissions and road traffic in the area. Kearny Mayor
Al Santos supports the new service, “People have
been asking for an express link to the PATH and the
TMA responded to the call.” The new shuttle made
its maiden voyage on December 6 and has been
making the commute easier for dozens of riders
each day. For more information,

An old bike is given new life for FREE through the Hudson TMA.
Recipients of bicycles through the Bike Rehab Program are found through the Hudson
TMA, community action programs, and social service agencies in Hudson County. In
addition to bicycles, recipients also receive a helmet, lights, and instruction in cycling safety.
So donate that old or unused bike today. There may be no easier way to make a big
difference in someone else’s life. Bicycles can be dropped off at the HCIA Household
Hazardous Waste events on May 7 and May 15. Look for notices in your local paper.

Millions of people ride the light rail, ferry, and bus
lines every day. And many of them have chosen
the monthly plan for two simple reasons:
1. It’s convenient; buy one pass each month
and that’s it. No waiting in ticket lines or
having to keep track of various fares. One
monthly pass gets you to and from work
with ease.
2. It saves money. Mass transit is easily one
of the most cost-effective ways to travel, and
buying the monthly pass is an even more
cost-effective way to use mass transit.
Save more by getting your first monthly pass
for 50% off. Switch to mass transit today!
