Living the Paschal Mystery
A Word
from the
Pastor
I
n the spirit of Stewardship, last week, we started a summer
basketball clinic. Some of Nativity’s “alumni” stars have agreed
to take part, giving their time and talent to their younger protégés;
helping them in all facets of the game. Please see the website and
bulletin for more information on this new summer clinic.
This Sunday we celebrate St. Peter and St. Paul. With all the faults
that Peter possessed, Jesus knew that he was the “right man for the
job”. In this week’s gospel, Jesus entrusts Peter with the “keys to
the kingdom”. He says to him, “And so I say to you, you are
Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church…” Peter always
tried to have the right response to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the
Son of the living God” and “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have
the words of everlasting life”.
You might remember that St Paul was not one of the twelve and
“met” Jesus along a dusty Damascus road. An unlikely character
since his occupation was that of killing Christians not converting
them. After his encounter with Jesus he changed from being a
murderer to an evangelizer. An encounter with Jesus, a lot less
dramatic, can have a life changing effect on you.
As in all things, God always knows us better than we know
ourselves. Jesus knew the wonderful characteristics each one of
these men embodied. We celebrate this weekend the way they
were molded into disciples of Jesus. They embraced his mission
and purpose for them. Jesus has a mission and a purpose for all of
us and is waiting to mold us we just have to be willing to
surrender to his will and listen for his voice calling us.
○○○○○
Thoughts on Scripture:
“Who am I?” This question Jesus put to his disciples long ago remains a
question for all times and all disciples. To be faithful rocks upon which
the church is built, we must know who Jesus is for us, listen to what he
teaches us and guard against anything prevailing against his church.
Peter and Paul’s faithful and fruitful discipleship rested on the rock of
their knowing Jesus. Our own faithful and fruitful discipleship rests on this
same rock.
We are naturally attracted to some figures who become larger than life
because of their exceptional influence, for example Bill Gates, Mother
Teresa, Desmond Tutu. This solemnity directs this natural attraction to
their faith and courage from their faithfulness.
[Taken from Living Liturgy]
Peace,
Repeated imprisonment didn’t silence Peter
or Paul; both preached the Good News of
salvation in Christ until their final suffering
and death. Both were able to do so because
Christ “stood by [them[ and gave [them]
strength”. So it is for us. Christ strengthens
us to preach boldly and faithfully. Such living
will bring us, too, to receive the “crown of
righteousness” (second reading). Faithful
disciples are always rescued by God;
however, divine rescue isn’t necessarily from
pain or suffering in this life or the threat of
death, but is always about being taken safely
to the heavenly kingdom. This is the victory
that we celebrate this day.
We may not proclaim Christ in great speeches, as did Peter and
Paul. But we do proclaim
Christ every day by the
rock-solid way we live
what Jesus has taught
us. Self-giving and
surrendering ourselves
to God’s will bring us the
same victory shared by
Peter and Paul.
The Faith Walk into
Catholicism
Are you an Adult or a Young Adult who has not yet received
the Sacrament of Confirmation? If so, would you like to receive
the last of the three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation
and Communion?
Do you or do you know of anyone who might be interested in
responding more fully to God’s invitation to become Catholic?
The Church of the Nativity offers a program called the RITE OF
CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) which is a weekly
information gathering which helps those interested in responding
more deeply to God's invitation to be more fully in their lives and
prepares them for union with the Church community.
If Interested, please call Jim Kenny 201 444-6362 or complete this
form and return to the Church Office.

Religious Education Program for Grades K-8:
Re-registration letters have been mailed to all
families presently enrolled. Re-registration may be
done either by mail or in person. Beginning JULY 1,
NEW registration will be taken at the Religious
Education Office during office hours.
To complete registration for our Parish Catechetical Program, a family must be:
Registered members of the parish
Present a certificate of Baptism for the child/ren and
Registration fee
To ensure that we make adequate provision for all planning to attend in the summer or
fall, we ask that ALL NEW REGISTRATION be completed by August 1st. Please relay
this information to prospective new registrants who might not receive this bulletin,
especially those planning to enroll first graders who have not been in our kindergarten
this year. Thank you!
For our Junior High Students (Gr. 7 – 8) Service Project Forms are due back at the
beginning of next school year.
We are grateful to the catechists, assistants, students and parents for all they have done
to make this year meaningful to so many.
SUMMER PROGRAM 2014
Children attend 10 days, Monday – Friday, 9:00AM – 12:30PM and must attend Advent
and Lent sessions, Masses during the school year for continued religious education.
The program will run from Monday August 4 to Friday August 15, 2014. Registration
forms were mailed and also they are available at the Narthex, Rectory and Religious
Education Office. Our reason for this option is to provide the best quality religious
education at the most convenient time for the majority of our families.
CAN YOU HELP?
Our Religious Education Program is once again in need of catechists for grades K-6, for
either Sunday morning or Thursday afternoon in our school and/or our summer option
program. We are especially in need of catechists to teach a small group (6-8 students)
in their home for 7th and 8th grade.
Top Reasons to Become a Catechist
You will grow in your own faith, learn the teachings of the
Church, and deepen your relationship with Jesus; your baptism
calls you to share in this ministry
Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, more than ever,
need to hear the Good News of Jesus and need to encounter good
role models of faith
Today’s catechetical textbooks/resources offer outstanding
support. You’ll be challenged, you’ll have fun, and you’ll make new friends
You’ll be helping people deepen their relationship with Jesus (you’ll be evangelizing!)
You’ll be handing on a 2000-year-old Tradition that changes lives
It’s our job: Jesus sent us to “go and teach all nations”
The Religious Education Coordinator will provide both group and individual sessions to
prepare you for this vital ministry to our young children. If you feel called to this ministry,
or even if you’re curious about what is involved, please call the Center @ 201-447-1776
for information.

Catechesis...about Liturgy
First-century Rome’s political situation: Imperial
Rome had a long history, sometimes glorious and
sometimes brutal. It was supposedly founded by
Romulus in 753 BC. Over the next six centuries of wars
brought Rome from a small power to a great world
empire. Originally government was by a senate and
Rome prospered both economically and culturally, but a
series of civil wars introduced corruption and ended the
prosperity. In 49 BC Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon
River and entered the city of Rome, he introduced
reform and attempted to bring back prosperity at the
same time that another five years of civil war followed.
Caesar finally defeated Pompey the Great and in 45 BC
became the dictator of the Roman Empire only to be
assassinated in 44 BC. Octavian became ruler of the
united Western and Eastern empire in 29 BC and two
years later received the title “Augustus”. He once again
introduced reforms, especially to restore the ancient
morality for which the Romans were noted and the
ancient religious festivals. The senate was
reestablished for Rome itself and some of the more
peaceful provinces; the frontier provinces were
controlled by legates who were appointed by Augustus
himself. This is something of the political situation in
which Peter and Paul found themselves.
It is known for certain that Peter eventually went to
Rome, became its first bishop, and died there in AD 67
by being hanged upside down on a cross. Paul was
converted about the year AD 34 and spent the better
part of his Christian life as a missionary to Cyprus and
Asia Minor where he founded a number of Christian
communities. In AD 60 he came as a prisoner to Rome,
was released two years later, once again did some
missionary work (possibly going to Spain), was again
taken prisoner in Rome, and was beheaded in AD 67
toward the end of Nero’s rule.

GOOD NEWS FOR LITTLE ONES PROGRAM: GOING ON VACATION! Our
very well received service of Good News for Little Ones will take a vacation
during June, July, August and early September. We will reopen in the Fall. We
will like to thank our fine staff of catechists and assistants for their service and
dedication to the little ones of our parish. We are also grateful for the fine
response parents have given to this program. Our Little Ones have been a joy
to share the good news with each Sunday.

Be sure to look for the new Nativity information table in the lobby of the
Church. The table will be staffed with volunteers who will provide
parishioners and visitors with details about programs and services as well as
helping members along their discipleship journey.
The I-Desk members can tell you information about Nativity’s ministries,
how to become a registered parishioner, about Religious Education,
community service and Sacramental Programs for school children, programs
for pre-schoolers and outreach within and outside of Nativity. You will even
be able to purchase a Mass Card!
We are seeking I-Desk members. Aside from the initial training, there will
be virtually no meetings. All it requires is getting to the Mass of your choice a
little early and staying a little later. The goal is to get enough volunteers to
have folks be at the I-Desk once every four to six weeks. Once you have
been trained, you will be amazed at how much you now know about your
parish. But guess what, if you don’t know the answer to a question you can
just say “I’ll find out”.
For more information on this exciting new ministry please contact Tony
LaFemina at 201 445-0218 or [email protected]. Please consider
joining this exciting new ministry.
Please be sure to stop by and
say hello or ask a question!

This coming week we will celebrate the 4th of July and the wonderful
freedoms which our country allows us. During this coming week let us
take this time to pray with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops this Act of Consecration for our country:
An Act of Consecration for the United States of America
Most Holy Trinity: Our Father in heaven, Who chose Mary as the fairest
of Your daughters; Holy Spirit, Who chose Mary as Your spouse; God
the Son, Who chose Mary as Your mother; in union with Mary, we
adore Your majesty and acknowledge Your supreme eternal dominion
and authority.
Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands
of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to You.
Through her we wish to thank You for the great resources of this land
and for the freedom which has been its heritage. Through the
intercession of Mary, have mercy on the Catholic Church in America.
Grant us peace. Have mercy on our President and all the officers of our
government. Grant us a fruitful economy born of justice and charity.
Have mercy on capital and industry and labor. Protect the family life of
the nation. Guard the innocence of our children. Grant the precious gift
of many religious vocations. Through the intercession of our Mother
Mary, have mercy on the sick, the poor, the tempted, sinners—on all
who are in need.
Mary, Immaculate Virgin, Our Mother, Patroness of our land, we praise
you and honor you and give ourselves to you. Protect us from every
harm. Pray for us, that acting always according to you will and the Will
of your Divine Son, Jesus, we may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.
