MATH
Today, the students and I reviewed basic addition facts
using different techniques to use when solving addition
problems. This week the students will be introduced to
Math Mountains. These are another new strategy that
will help them with their addition and subtraction fact
families. They show how a number can be broken into
parts and how those parts can be combined to make the
number again.
Students will also be participating in Warrior Math with
Mrs. Perrman twice a week starting this week. This
activity will be used to practice basic addition and
subtraction facts so they become more fluent.
Today, you will be receiving information about two
different websites that can be used at home to help
improve your child’s math fact fluency.
 MobyMax.com is a great site that has practice for
math fluency, math concepts, science, reading
fluency, grammar, and much more!
 Xtramath.com is a site that is strictly to improve
math fact fluency.
Old Fashion addition and subtraction flash cards are also
a great way to practice those math facts at home!
HOMEWORK PACKET
Today, your child brought home his/her homework
packet. On the front of the packet is a nightly reading
guide in which you can fill out together. I like to suggest
that your child writes the title of the book they read each
night while you initial and write the amount of time they
read. Students are required to read ALOUD 15 minutes
nightly. This week’s math pages allow students to get
back into the groove while solving simple addition
problems. Homework is due this Friday, 8/28.

Please be patient with us, as we will get in touch with you
closer to mid-September. We’re still working on getting our
daily routine in place! 
CLASSROOM BIRTHDAY!
This week our friend Jasmin has her birthday on Tuesday and
we would like to wish her a wonderful special day!
LANGUAGE ARTS
This week, our main focus will be “things we can
find in a community”. We’ll be discussing three
different types of communities; rural, suburban,
and urban while reading a story titled, Iris and
Walter. Today, the students simply took a picture
walk through the story and shared their predictions.
Tomorrow, they will listen to the story while they
finger follow. On Wednesday, we will echo-read the
story and discuss it more in depth. Please note that
students will have to read the story once for
homework and as always, they are encouraged to
read it aloud. Families, feel free to read the story
WITH your child as an alternative. With Iris and
Walter, we will learn how to identify the characters
and know that their feelings can change throughout
the story. Students will also learn that there can be
more than one setting in a story. There will be a
weekly test this Friday, August 28th. This will assess
the weekly vocabulary words, short vowel sounds,
and identifying characters and settings. It will not
test your child’s comprehension of Iris and Walter.
Instead, they will have to apply what they’ve
learned to another story. For the first three weeks,
students will have the weekly reading test read to
them. This will allow them to become more
familiar with our weekly assessment format.
For grammar, students will learn that a sentence
tells a complete idea and remember that all
sentences begin with a capital letter. Spelling words
will be used to review short vowel sounds. Spelling
test will be on Friday.
