Spelling Words
We will have weekly spelling words as well as weekly spelling tests. The students will begin
the year with 10 spelling words, which will increase by 2 each week as we add on more until the
lists consistently stay at 20.
Each week, the spelling list will consist of:
2 phonetic words (can sound out)
5 words from a word family
1 compound word
12 tricky words
Students will be given their spelling lists each Monday on their weekly calendar.
Students will have homework each night to help them with their spelling words. Some of these
assignments will consist of: Writing their words 5 times each or using their spelling words
in sentences etc.
Though 20 words seems like a lot, each week two new tricky words will be added and two will
be dropped so students will have approximately 6 weeks to learn to spell their tricky words.
Tricky Word Spelling Scores will be recorded on the quarterly report card.
