Ritzel Raymond Anthony (Sakuu as he was known to the entire BVI) was born in Tortola, B.V.I. to the
late Edgar Anthony; and RuthAnnAnthony on May 17th 1953.
While still a baby, he migrated with his parents to St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. He received his early education
at the ALL Saints Cathedral School, later at Wayne Aspinal Junior High School and then at Charlotte
Amalie High School. From his early age he was very interested in sports, namely basketball, softball
and swimming.
He attended the Breckenridge Technical Institute in Kentucky, USA where he completed training in the
field of electronics. Upon returning to St. Thomas, he worked with his father in his construction business
for many years. He eventually returned to his birthplace (Tortola), met and married Lorrily Hill in 1982.
Sakuu joined BVI Electricity Department as a linesman in the early 1980's. During that time he continued
to be very active in sports and promoted the BVI in various countries in the sporting arena. He was
exceptional in both basketball and softball. He refereed basketball games and was also on national teams
for both sports, where he travelled overseas with the teams to represent the BVI.
After sustaining an injury while performing his duties as a linesman in the late 1980's, he was transferred
to office duties. He was then able to spend more time with his children who were all in high school at
this time. Although he was in severe pain sometimes, he would still hobble out to get their lunches and
walk Khadejah back to the school gate afterwards .
.The injury also left him unable to participate in sports physically, but that did not stop him from teaching
his children, especially basketball; So much so that his children are all involved in basketball. He also
coached basketball teams to remain active in sports.
Sakuu loved his mother, his five children, grandchildren, sister, niece, nephews and great nieces and
nephews unconditionally. He also loved his friends whom he considered very dear to him. He was
often told by many persons that he could easily win any 'Father of the Year' award for his love which he
displayed towards his children. Although they are grown, his feelings for them did not waiver.
Towards the end, Sakuu spoke with his mother in St. Thomas every single day to express his love for God
and gratitude for sparing his life one more day.
Sakuu will never be forgotten! He will always be remembered above all else for the love he had for his
family and also as one of the greatest sportsman the BVI ever had.
Gone but will remain in our hearts forever. Rest in eternal peace Sakuu.
