This week students will continue to participate in Read
to Self, Read to Someone, Listening to Reading, Word
Work, and Work on Writing for the Daily 5. Each
rotation is 15 minutes. In Making Meaning we will
complete our unit on informational text features. We
will review functional texts while looking at a school
lunch menu and directions on how to make a paper
airplane. Our assessment is on Thursday. Students will
be responsible for listing text features in the given
text and identifying their purpose. In vocabulary we
will begin our final vocabulary unit, again looking at
prefixes. Our prefix this week is uni- meaning “one”.
Ask your child to define words that use this prefix.
For Words Their Way please have your child work with
his/her words throughout the week so they are familiar
with their words and patterns. In writing we will
continue working on our weather stories.
We will continue our unit called Journeys and
Destinations. We will explore the concept of change in
many different readings. Students will take part in
discussions, writing, listening, vocabulary study and
research will be based on the readings. We will
continue learning about types of poetry. In Making
Meaning we will begin our unit on
Wondering/Questioning Expository Nonfiction. Our
read aloud this week is Flashy Fantastic Rain Forest
Frogs. We will continue to work in small groups for
Words Their Way. Please have your child work with
his/her words throughout these two weeks so they are
familiar with their words and patterns. In vocabulary
we work on the Latin suffixes –ible, -able meaning can
or able to be done.. In writing we will work on
Informational writing. We will be solving analogies
where students need to analyze the elements of a
puzzle, define a relationship to two other things. Mrs.
Hurt will come into the classroom and talk about
Myths.

competition will take place April 22nd.
