Allegedly, moreover, plagiarism undermines the moral fibre of the perpetrator (people who admitted to cheating while at university have been found to be more likely to commit dishonest acts in employment—Sims, 1995), and inhibits the student’s intellectual development (Yeung et al., 2002). The habitual plagiarist does not acquire the academic skills of analysis and evaluation, and will not learn how to synthesise ideas or engage in rational argument. Instead the person simply replicates the words of others without adding anything that is new.” Bennett, R. (2005). Factors associated with student plagiarism in a post-1992 university. Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education. Vol. 30, No. 2, April 2005, pp. 137–162. 1. According to the text which of statement about plagiarism was not initially made by another person? A. “The habitual plagiarist does not acquire the academic skills of analysis and evaluation…” B. “inhibits the student’s intellectual development…” C. “Conceals and misrepresents the originality of the true author.” D. “…people who admitted to cheating while at university have been found to be more likely to commit dishonest acts in employment…” 2. In quoting the statement that plagiarism “conceals and misrepresents the originality of the true author,” the author included both the original authors name, the year, and the page number (Clough, 2003, p. 2). However, the page number was not included with the other quotes. Which statement best explains why the page number was included? A. The statement by Clough is an exact quote so the page must be included while the others were only paraphrasing, so they did not require the page to be included. B. The author was being more thorough with the Clough quote. C. All should have had the page number, the Bennett must have forgot to put the others into the text. D. The page number is only included if the quote or paraphrasing is a long one and so that is why it was given. Peer Behavior According to McCabe and Trevino (1997), student’s perception of peer disapproval is the strongest predictor of reducing cheating. Students are more likely to cheat if they observe others cheating or perceive that it is commonplace (Genereux and McLeod, 1995; Crown and Spiller, 1998). Other peer influences such as belonging to a student group, a fraternity or sorority, frequent partying, and involvement in extracurricular activities also appear to be related to an increased incidence of cheating (McCabe and Trevino, 1997; Nowell and Laufer, 1997; Crown and Spiller, 1998; McCabe, Trevino, and Butterfield, 2001). A survey reported in Business Week (Merritt, 2002) found that only 19% of students say they would report a classmate who cheated. Hutton, P. (2003).
