In 2014, Menahem Pressler took the
stage at the Berliner Philharmoniker‘s
annual New Year‘s Eve Concert, the
Gala from Berlin. For his solo piece,
Pressler chose Mozart‘s Piano Concerto in A major, composed during
Mozart’s prime in Vienna and one of
his most beautiful contributions to the
genre. The Berliner Philharmoniker
added to this masterpiece compositions by Rameau, Kodály, Brahms and
Dvorák.
For 2013’s year-end celebration, we
heard two of the most popular Hungarian Dances by Brahms as well as
three of the Slavonic Dances by Dvorák,
melodies from the ballet Gayaneh by
the Soviet Armenian composer Aram
Khachaturian and the the third movement of Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic
Dances.

A gala concert on New Year’s Eve – what
better way was there of ringing out the
old and in the new 2012. The Berliner
Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle
were joined by beloved Italian mezzosoprano Cecilia Bartoli, who graced
the programme with arias selected
from her extraordinary repertoire. Also
featured were exhilarating dances by
Brahms and Dvorák that happily combine characteristics of their own idioms
with Slavonic and Hungarian folk music.
In 2011 the Berliner Philharmoniker
and their musical director Sir Simon
Rattle welcomed the New Year together
with highly awarded Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin. His musicality, the depth
and poetic quality of his interpretations,
and his extraordinary virtuosity have
placed him at the forefront of today’s
pianists.
The Berliner Philharmoniker perform
under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel,
whose infectious energy and exceptional artistry have made him one of the
most sought-after conductors by orchestras and opera companies around
the world. They welcome mezzosoprano Elina Garanca, who has become one of the world’s most famous
singers within just a few years. Currently she stars in the title role of the
Metropolitan’s new opera production
Carmen by Georges Bizet.

At the 2009 gala, the Berliner Philharmoniker, their musical director Sir
Simon Rattle and pianist Lang Lang
presented works by two Russian composers: Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto
No. 2, one of the most enduring popular pieces of classical music, demands
both a virtuoso pianist and a huge
supple orchestral sound. The Nutcracker by Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, perhaps
the most popular of all ballets, completes the programme.
What a start into the Mozart year 2006:
The Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir
Simon Rattle dedicated their 2005 Gala
from Berlin entirely to the great Austrian composer, in tribute of his 250th
birthday. The program includes some
of the greatest works by Mozart, performed by a stellar ensemble featuring
the formidable soloists Magdalena
Kožená, Camilla Nylund, and John Relyea. the ‚Jeunehomme‘ piano concerto
is performed by pianist Emanuel Ax.
An extraordinary programme for an extraordinary night: The Berliner Philharmoniker celebrate the final day of the
20th Century with Grand Finales in the
first part and heralds the leap into the
21st Century with an explosion of sparkling music pieces in the 2nd half of the
programme. A true celebration that
welcomed in the new millenium with

Fauré was not drawn to compose a Requiem because of the death of a loved
one, and his composition is not set to
the standard liturgical text. As a result
the mood of the Requiem is relatively
calm and peaceful and often referred
to as a “lullaby of death”. Fauré’s unconventional composition has become
a firm favourite in the repertoire - especially with a world-class cast that
includes conductor Paavo Järvi, vocalists Chen Reiss and Matthias Goerne
as well as instrumentalists Éric Picard
and Pilippe Aïche.
Havana celebrated the turn of 2009/2010
with an extraordinary New Year’s Eve
Concert, with Caribean salsa-rhythms
and classics of Cuban music. Highlights of the evening are the performances of Omara Portuondo who gained international stardom as the singer
of the “Buena Vista Social Club”. She
started her career at the TROPICANA
in 1945. Therefore, the jubilee is a very
special event that she celebrates with
her friends and the fabulous TROPICANA artists.
The Nobel Prize Concert 2008 offers
fantastic performers: Sir John Eliot
Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir,
together with Eric Ericson Chamber
Choir and the Scandinavian singers
Miah Persson (soprano), Ann Hallenberg (alto), Helge Rönning (tenor), and
Peter Mattei (bass). The orchestra, as
is customary with the Nobel Prize Concert, is the Swedish Royal Philharmonic. The programme includes Dvorák‘s

Performed in the grandeur of Berlin‘s

EuroArts celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s death presenting a gala of distinguished singing
art: 4 Tenors on one stage with Placido Domingo, José Carreras, José Cura
and Marcelo Alvarez. From the start,
Verdi had the opera composer’s most
necessary gift, the ability to write melodies that communicate a character’s
emotions and stir emotions in those
who listen. The programme includes
music from some of Verdi’s most beloved works such as Aida and Falstaff..
On the tenth anniversary of Herbert
von Karajan’s death, the Berliner Philharmoniker payed tribute to their late
maestro in his home town of Salzburg.
Claudio Abbado conducted an all-Mozart programme in honour of his predecessor. Mozart’s Requiem is sung by
some of the best presentday soloists
including Karita Mattila and Bryn Terfel. A performance that in every respect
meets Karajan’s own high artistic standards.

foundation in the early 13th century to
present day and observes the daily routine of the choir boys throughout the
year.
Guided by two children and several

In this ballet, choreographer Uwe
Scholz absorbs the structure of the
liturgy of the mass, with Mozart’s unfinished Great Mass in C minor as a starting point. He then adds other works
by the same composer, such as the
Adagio and Fugue in C minor. He also
puts in passages of Gregorian chant,
excerpts from contemporary music by
Kurtág, Jahn and Pärt, and readings of
poems by Paul Celan. Mozart’s music
becomes a mould in which Scholz casts
his choreography. A truly impressive
requiem; a choreographic revelation.
Matthew Hart has taken Sergei
Prokofiev’s ever-popular piece for solo
narrative voice and orchestra and made
a delightful children’s ballet, performed
by pupils from the prestigious Royal
Ballet School, with the great Anthony
Dowell as the Storyteller/Grandfather.
Hart’s choreography and Ian Spurling’s
designs give a contemporary feel to the
traditional tale of the boy who saves his
animal friends from a wolf. There is a
captivating simplicity to their highly entertaining production.
Hungarian choreographer Youri Vámos combined E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Nutcracker story with Dickens’ immortal
A Christmas Carol. A colourful dance
production in which ballet, music, and
film are skillfully combined.

Der Rosenkavalier is Richard Strauss’
most popular opera and the greatest
comic opera since Mozart. Premiered
just three years before the start of the
First World War, the opera traces the
artistic heritage of the Austrian-Hungarian empire in the days of Mozart,
where the story is set, to the morbid
distraction of the Viennese Art Nouveau.
Franz Lehár’s Die Lustige Witwe is reputed to be one of the most famous
operettes in the world. Under the direction of the French Jerome Savary’s
the Merry Widow” sparkles. At the first
staging of this production at the OperaComique in Paris (Octobre 2005) the
singers appeared to be having as much
fun as the audience. The Austrian Maestro Manfred Honeck presents his
musical view on this operette.

Engelbert Humperdinck was born in
Germany in 1854. In the 1890s, his sister
had written a libretto based on a Grimm
fairy tale, and asked her brother to set it
to music as a Christmas entertainment
for her children. Later, the both of them
decided to turn this modest home project into a full-scale opera: Hänsel and
Gretel, premiered in December 1893 in
Weimar, was an instant hit and remains
an everlasting masterpiece. R. Strauss,
who was assistant conductor for the
premiere, called it „a masterwork of
the first rank”.
To save the billions belonging to young
and attractive widow Hanna Glawari
for his country Pontevedro, Baron Zeta
initiates a very special matchmaking:
he commands the charming womanizer Count Danilo Danilowitsch to carry
out his patriotic duty in marrying the
widow. What the baron cannot have
known is that Danilo and Hanna already
had a relationship in the past… Helmut
Lohner really excels in presenting this
amusing love story on stage. The gorgeous set, the elegant costumes, and
the presentation of the characters add
up to a formidable whole.
Deliberate confusion in 18th-century
Seville which is entangled with three
marriages blessed by the monks of
the monastery. After performances at
the famous ‘Stars of the White Nights’
Festival held in St. Petersburg and the
1991/92 festival dedicated to Prokofiev,
this outstanding new staging of Betrothal in a Monastery was recorded
at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, brilliantly performed by the Kirov
Opera Company and Artistic Director
and Chief Conductor Valery Gergiev.

the mysterious composer Agostino
Steffani is back in the French palace.
Cecilia Bartoli along with Philippe Jaroussky, performs and embodies with
passion the operas set to music by the
composer priest. Her voice transports
us to Louis XIV’s chambers, to the Hall
of Mirrors, to the Salon de Vénus and
the mysterious groves in the palace’s
park.
On 25 June 2010, conductor John Nelson led the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Choir and the famous soloists Lisa

Renowned conductor John Nelson with
one of the world’s greatest orchestras,
the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the
Gulbenkian Choir and celebrated soloists, presents Beethoven’s great and
well-known work Missa Solemnis at
Gulbenkian’s Grand Auditorium in Lisbon. „My chief aim when I was composing this grand Mass was to awaken
and permanently instill religious feelings, not only in the singers, but also in
the listeners”. Ludwig van Beethoven.
Gioacchino Rossini‘s Petite Messe Solennelle was originally written for two
pianos and harmonium. Partly for fear
that it would be done anyway after his
death, Rossini later orchestrated the
piece, without losing its candor and
subtlety. The resulting version had
its first public performance on 28 February 1869, three months after the
composer‘s death. „Mr Chailly‘s genius
for the Rossini style has ripened with
the years. His performance has daring
and velocity.“ Gramophone
This festive concert from the Gethsemanekirche in Berlin marks the 60th
anniversary of the RIAS Kammerchor.
Under the baton of the new chief conductor Hans-Christoph Rademann,
the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin performed
famous Motets by Johann Sebastian
Bach, interspersed with some fine instrumental works of the composer.
Founded in 1948, the choir enjoys a
worldwide reputation as one of the best
ensembles of its kind.

Since its founding over 500 years ago
the Wiener Sängerknaben, a.k.a. Vienna Boys’ Choir, has been a fixed attraction in musical life. On January 27,
2006 – the day of the composer’s 250th
anniversary, the Wiener Sängerknaben
celebrate Mozart with this concert from
the Stephansdom Vienna. The Radio
Symphonieorchester Wien plays under
the baton of Bertrand de Billy, soloist is
the French soprano Sandrine Piau.
With this festive concert, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden under
the baton of Fabio Luisi celebrated
the Re-opening of the Frauenkirche
in Dresden. After the Bombing in February 1945, the church burnt out and
its dome, called the ‚Stone Bell‘”, collapsed. The rebuilt church will remain
a monument and a symbol of hope and
conciliation. Beethoven’s overwhelming music blends impressively with
the camera shots of the vast and impressive hall - a touching event of great
solemnity.
Widely accepted as a leading authority
on Baroque music, Ton Koopman conducts J.S. Bach‘s Magnificat BWV 243
and the Magnificat of Johann Kuhnau,
who was Bach‘s predecessor as cantor
of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.
Performed by the Amsterdam Baroque
Orchestra and Choir joined by soloists
Deborah Yorck, Orlanda Velez Isidro,
Bogna Bartosz, Jörg Dürmüller and
Klaus Mertens.

The Marienvesper is a mysterious piece that holds on tight to its secrets:
Some scholars regard it as a traditional
Vesper, consisting of a given number of
pieces, to be performed in a given order. Others argue that Monteverdi was
a highly modern composer on the brink
of a new musical epoque - they believe
that the piece is more a lose collection
of compositions. This goes a long way
to explain why performances of the Marienvesper differ immensely from one
another - always offering a different
look at Monteverdi‘s mysterious work.
The televised recording of this singular concert with the Russian monastery choir took place in the Cathedral of
Ulm, the tallest Gothic parish church in
Germany. In conjunction with the millenium of the Christianization of Russia,
the monastery choir was permitted to
travel to Germany on their first foreign
tour in history. The performance ranges from Gregorian to Romantic choral
music.
The performance features the talents
of today’s leading Bach expert, Helmuth Rilling with his Gächinger Kantorei and Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, in
the first performance of this work since
its rediscovery in 1988.

It was on the spur of the moment that
András Schiff and a few of his friends
decided to establish the Cappella. The
musicians’ personal friendship makes
for unforced, captivating performances
of superb quality. One landmark in this
partnership is the series of concerts at
the Teatro Olimpico, Europe’s oldest
existing theatre. Designed almost 450
years ago by Andrea Palladio, it is a very
special setting for the pieces by Mozart
and Bach.
Koroliov’s performances of Bach’s music usually arouse great excitement,
and his rendering of Bach’s famous
aria and 30 variations is no exception.
The breathtaking intensity develops out
of his natural virtuosity. In a cooperation with the Bachfest Leipzig, EuroArts
produced a recording of an exciting recital with this extraordinary phenomenon on the international piano scene –
the best way to experience a famous yet
demanding and certainly immensely
important work by Bach.

Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann
is one of the world’s top instrumentalists. His numerous recordings are
celebrated by both press and audience
and have already received countless
awards. Alongside his career as a celebrated soloist, he also focuses on
chamber music. Young Italian pianist
Enrico Pace has been his pianist counterpart since 1998. Both musicians
have just released a CD of Bach’s violin sonatas – another much acclaimed
Zimmermann recording.
The new founded Orchestra Mozart is
supposed to give young, talented musicians a possibility to play in a worldclass orchestra being conducted by
one of the outstanding conductors of
our time. Claudio Abbado, the artistic
director, is responsible for its profile,
inviting musicians and chamber ensemble of international reputation, e.g.
Reinhold Friedrich, Michala Petri or
Jacques Zoon.
In the beautiful setting of the historical
Fest Hall in Leipzig’s Old City Hall, the
brothers Kuijken and Robert Kohnen
give a live performance of the Musical
