Spring Forward
Every spring the clocks move ahead by an hour, readjusting our
sense of time. This year we are also marking time with special
anniversaries. The Poem-A-Day contest celebrates its 10th
season, the Clemens Mill location celebrates 20 years of library
service, our Art Galleries turn 40, and of course, Canada is
150 years young. It is our mission to support and inspire our
community in the exploration of reading, arts, learning and
innovation and we get to champion milestones in all these
areas in 2017. Spring forward with us – watch for pop-up
programs featuring new technology, check out Luke Painter’s
fantastical designs at our Preston Gallery or enjoy an Evening
of Poetry on April 21.
The best is yet to come.

MagnusCards App
Going to the library to borrow a book, use the computers, or read the newspaper
is an easy and enjoyable activity for many people in our community. However, for
the one in seven Ontarians who live with a disability, gaining access to information
and entertainment can seem overwhelming; sometimes even taking the bus can
feel completely out of reach.
That’s why Idea Exchange works to ensure we offer accessible customer service
that respects the dignity and independence of people with disabilities. We
provide all of our members with a variety of accessible formats and adaptive
technologies, and deliver barrier-free services and programs.
Last fall, we collaborated with local company Magnusmode to
launch MagnusCards, a free app combining instructional
social stories with elements of game design to teach
essential life skills and support independent living.
Originally designed to help people with autism
navigate daily tasks using an app on a smartphone,
MagnusCards has grown into a tool used by
many different people with diverse needs.
Idea Exchange has created card decks that
provide step-by-step instructions for activities
such as getting a library card, visiting an art
gallery and checking out a book. You can
also download card decks that help you
navigate the transit system, get a coffee
and cash a cheque at the bank.
Download the MagnusCards app today!

THANK YOU
VOLUNTEERS!
April is National Volunteer Month, and we salute the more
than 400 individuals who donate their time, ideas and
energy to Idea Exchange.
In 2016, a grand total of 378 individuals volunteered their
time to Idea Exchange by performing a whopping 10,608
hours of service. The tasks performed were varied: some
traditional, like Visiting Library Service, shelf reading, craft
and material preparation and program support; others
more innovative, like the Preston Community Garden,
photography and video volunteering, Third Age Learning
and Excess Party Committee volunteering.
Thank you volunteers! Our programming is richer, our
buildings are more vibrant and the future of our community
is brighter thanks to your contributions.

ARCHITECTURE
Cambridge, Ontario
Celebrating 40 Years
The year 1977 was when Canadian road signs were converted to metric units,
the Eaton’s Center opened in Toronto, the Blue Jays played their first game, iconic
Canadian painters Jack Bush and William Kurelek both passed away, Marshall
McLuhan published Understanding Language and Media, and Quebec became the
first jurisdiction in the world to proscribe discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Looking back forty years helps us take the
measurement of how much has changed, to
take stock of progress. As 2017 marks the
40th anniversary of Cambridge’s art galleries,
we have the chance to reflect on our past
accomplishments as much as to celebrate
our upcoming developments. From our
humble beginnings located on the second
floor mezzanine of the Queen’s Square library in 1977 with a handful of exhibitions
and one staff person, no art collection or education programs, to today – more
than 500 exhibitions and thousands of arts education activities later, three public
gallery locations and national recognition, countless community partnerships and a
keystone permanent collection of more than 200 contemporary fibre art works – we
can only imagine what the next 40 years hold for us.
To mark this special occasion and in recognition
of Canada’s 150th, we have planned a vibrant
year of redefining and reimagining the ways
in which we serve our communities. We
are launching a new and accessibly priced
fundraising event Volume 1: Excess Party;
developing free arts programs to meet the
needs of vulnerable groups; transitioning
to a free membership program in order to
be inclusive and to welcome all people; and renovating our art storage vault to
incorporate specialized mobile storage units specifically designed to protect our
textile collection, ensuring its conservation for future generations. 2017, our 40th
year, Canada’s 150th, is going to be an exceptional time and we look forward to
having you with us on this journey into the future.
Cheers!

GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
Diana Lynn VanderMeulen: `*crystal, rest
Continues to March 5, Preston Gallery
A disco-drone melts through shimmering lights and soft splashing
of a synthetic waterfall. `*crystal, rest offers an endless loop of a
holographic landscape as a point of meditation and self-reflection.
Don’t miss the chance to see this immersive exhibition before it
closes. Once you see it, you’ll want to come back again.
Diana Lynn VanderMeulen is a Toronto-based multimedia artist who
received her BFA from York University in 2012. Her practice is fluid
between collage, painting, sculptural installation and digital media.
Past and present works investigate mysterious elements of our natural
world through the selective vision of magic realism.
Diana Lynn VanderMeulen, Crystal Rest, 2017.
Luke Painter: Modern Wand
March 31 – May 27, Preston Gallery
Opening: Friday, March 31, 7:00pm
Luke Painter’s practice explores the relationships
between historical and contemporary design and art
movements by creating formal, narrative and tangential
connections between them. In Modern Wand, Painter
creates a number of sculptures that are amalgams and
translations of historical design objects and furniture.
The series of sculptures are fabricated in glass and wood
through traditional and laser cut techniques and rest on a
series of interconnecting and raised carpeted platforms.
12
MAGAZINE
Luke Painter, Modern Wand (digital image), 2017.
Influenced by designers like Arthur Mackmurdo and
Emile Galle, these works convey organic, ornamental
and anthropomorphic sensibilities with the appearance
of holding the body and also physically suggesting
the body at the same time. The work offers a space for
the viewer to imagine the often-contrasting themes of
functionality and fantasy that played out in the 20th
century in relation to art and design practices. The
objects appear to be adrift without a specific stylistic
timeframe and with uncertain and open intentions.
Twenty + Change: NEXT GENERATION
February 27 – April 9, Design at Riverside Gallery
Opening: Monday, February 27, 6:30pm
UUfie Lecture: Thursday, March 23, 6:00pm
(co-presented by Waterloo Architecture and Idea
Exchange, Design at Riverside)
Twenty + Change, founded in 2007, is an ongoing
exhibition and publication series dedicated to promoting
emerging designers working in architecture, landscape
architecture and urban design in Canada. As the fourth
edition of the series NEXT GENERATION presents a
litmus of concerns and approaches across the country as
represented by 13 emerging practices from Vancouver to
St. John’s.
Selected by a curatorial committee of noted educators,
authors, and practitioners who sought projects and
practices that displayed a level of invention or a degree of
risk-taking – ones that stood out as pushing boundaries in
program, design and tectonic explorations, or that offer
an alternative approach to the practice of architecture. In
forging a different path than many of their predecessors,
this generation of designers is exploring the potential for
architecture to transform society.
Assiniboine Park Washrooms, Peter Sampson Architecture Studio. Photo by Mathew Piller.
By presenting the cumulative products of a new
generation of designers, Twenty + Change seeks to
expose Canada’s rich community of young designers who
are endeavouring to move the discourse of their practice
forward, and setting a new agenda for innovation in
architecture, landscape and urban design.

Generation Yet Unnamed
March 29 – May 7, Queen’s Square Gallery
Opening: Wednesday, March 29, 6:30pm
Generation Yet Unnamed is a new
exhibition focused on art made by
youth in Cambridge in multiple
mediums
including
painting,
drawing, sculpture, video, photo,
installation,
and
sound. The
exhibition explores the issues that
the future generation of artists, in
secondary schools and outside of
them, are addressing or questioning
in creative ways. It emphasizes how
art can shape lives and our youth
especially.
Projects Review 2017
April 24 – May 21, Design at Riverside Gallery
Opening: Monday, April 24, 6:30pm
Projects Review 2017 features graduate and undergraduate projects from the University
of Waterloo School of Architecture. The exhibition showcases the creativity, craft
and commitment to architectural excellence that are internationally recognized
qualities of the School. Undergraduate projects are immersed in a full range
of contemporary issues that span from the nuances
of building design to the sustainability of urban
precincts. Graduate projects are distinguished by
self-directed thesis work that examines the ever
changing cultural, digital, poetic, and political
conditions confronting architectural
practice in the 21st century.

Young Canadian Paintings
Heidi Jahnke, Derrick Piens, Claire Scherzinger,
Larissa Tiggelers
May 12 – June 24, Queen’s Square Gallery
Opening: Friday, May 12, 7:00pm
This group exhibition of paintings by Canadian artists is
the second installment of a series of exhibitions exploring
the latest trends in the medium. In this collection of works,
mysterious and bizarre interpretations of landscape and
sculpture are present. Included are works in oil and
acrylic, as well as varying scales. Painting is well and
alive in 2017 and Canadian artists are proving that risk
on the canvas is still possible and that paintings can still
be young.

TEEN E-WRITER IN RESIDENCE
I am extremely honoured to be the very first Teen E-writer in Residence for ideaexchange.org/teens
When I heard that Idea Exchange staff loved my idea of having a blog on their website from teens for teens,
I was so excited. I was determined to make this happen because I feel teens should have a chance to voice
their thoughts, ideas, and opinions. I wanted to promote that idea. The goal of my blog is to inspire teens
through writing to find their passion, help us relate to one another, and maybe learn new things along the
way.
The teen years can be stressful and confusing which can make you feel like you are stuck floating in space.
I constantly feel that way about my future. I am floating off in the universe, going back and forth between
what career path I should follow, and the one thing keeping me tethered back to earth is creativity. My
technique in dealing with stressful situations is to write.
Idea Exchange offers many programs that inspire youth to discover their passion.
For example, Idea Exchange is seeking youth artists to join them for the annual
The Brush Off Junior event on Wednesday, March 22 at QS. This live painting
competition challenges teens to compete in two 30 minute rounds where they
will then present their amazing artwork to the audience. The winners move onto
the main event at THEMUSEUM in Kitchener.
Idea Exchange is also involved in Cambridge’s contributions to National Youth
Arts Week from May 1 – 7, which combines a variety of activities to get your
creativity flowing. Whether you’re interested in sports, music, volunteering
or drama, there’s something for everyone.
Make your 2017 a year to find your passion!

The Changing Face
of Volunteering
Volunteering is not just the purview of the retired these days.
Statistics Canada’s most recent report showed that more than 47%
of Canadians volunteered their time in 2010, the hourly equivalent
of over 1 million full-time jobs. Volunteers come from all walks
of life, all sectors, all ages and communities; and the tasks they
perform are as varied as the organizations they serve. Surprisingly,
the highest rates of volunteering were found among Canadians
who were younger, were single or in a relationship, or had young
children at home.
Today’s volunteer positions offer, by design, opportunities to grow,
learn, gain new skills or share established ones. Organizations
seek volunteers from across generations, with varied backgrounds,
different skill sets and priorities. By valuing the engagement of
diverse people, they invite in a wealth of opportunities. Win-win is
the mandate. Community growth is the goal.
