The Ten Commandments are broken into three categories. Identify and discuss which
Commandments would be categorized by:
o our relationship with God?
o our relationship with others?
o our relationship to things?
How do these Commandments help us live a Christ centered life?
Is it possible that the Ten Commandments are a love letter from God, not a cold list of rules to
blindly follow? Give reasons for your answer. If so,
o what does this tell us about God’s heart?
o about His character?
How do the Ten Commandments show:
o God isn’t trying to start a religion, He’s trying to build a relationship with His people?
o what God really cares about?
What do we learn about the holiness of God from this text?
Does God still require full obedience in order for us to receive His specific blessings for our lives?
Explain.
o If yes, how can people know God’s requirements fully today, making obedience possible?
o In light of us living in the ‘days of grace’ what does obedience look like? Has it changed?
Why, or why not?
Discuss the holy fear the Israelites may have experienced in verse 18-20.
o There are two kinds of fear mentioned. Can you explain the difference?
Does this scripture identify any connection between Godly obedience, the holiness of God, and
Godly fear? Explain your answer.

In our casual culture, is God’s holiness still the same? Explain.
How does your own relationship with God, your worship and your prayer life reflect your
knowledge of God’s holiness?
What does the fear of the Lord look like in your own life? Can you personally identify with the two
kinds of fear the Israelites experienced (verses 18-20)? Explain.
Does thinking about the Ten Commandments as God’s love letter to you change how you respond
to them? Explain.
React to this statement: “The Commandments reveal the heart of a loving, relational, and engaged
heavenly Father that wants the best for His children.”
Of the three categories listed in the first question of the “From the Text” section, which category
do you personally struggle to follow most? Identify a real life scenario that explains your answer.
How has this study and discussion of the text changed the way you view the Ten
Commandments? God’s character? Your heart towards following Jesus?
