Monday, September 26 Dear Parents, This week is all about apples

Monday, September 26
Dear Parents,
This week is all about apples! We found apples in the question box, and apple tree in our
classroom, apples in the sensory box and on and on and on!
We heard all about the legend of Johnny Appleseed today. With my voice somewhat gone after
being sick this weekend, we used our circle time to watch a Disney short about him. They got so
excited when they heard him sing one of our special prayers that we say at school. The children
made some hats to be just like Johnny. We painted apple trees today with no paintbrushes. Ask
your child about it. They’ll be up in the hallway, so check them out.
All this week:
 The sensory box is filled with oats, cinnamon sticks, wooden “apples”, scoops, and
containers. I love the conversations I’m hearing between the children while they are
exploring together.
 Our math center activities have apple trees that the children are working on number
recognition and meaningful counting with. We also have numbered apples and worms with
dots representing each number. The children are counting and matching while they play.
 I brought a ficus tree from home. A couple of picking baskets, clothes pins and some long
stemmed apples have the children pretending to be out in the orchard picking apples.
There is great strengthening going on as the children work the clothes pins clipping the
apples to the tree. Many were frustrated to begin and left to do something else. Others
kept at it until they figured it out.
We are beginning to hear about Abraham and Sarah and their desire to have a child. While well
beyond what we would consider child-bearing years, God provides for these faithful followers. Our
special Bible words come from the book of 1 John, “Beloved, we are God’s children now!” We’ll be
hearing about God’s special gift of baptism and the promises He gives to us through it.

Dear Parents,
We were scientists today! We donned lab coats, goggles, and magnifying glasses as the children
made hypotheses. What will happen to an apple slice in different liquids? We have our control
subject and a variety of other jars that we were observing today. We’ll be watching to see what
happens throughout the week...
We worked our fine motor and hand-eye coordination “sewing” and apple together. I kept them
here to help decorate our room, but you can find them hanging from the ceiling. We made the
letter A with our Handwriting pieces. Two big lines and one little line made the letter A.
All this week:
 The sensory box is filled with oats, cinnamon sticks, wooden “apples”, scoops, and
containers. I love the conversations I’m hearing between the children while they are
exploring together.

kept at it until they figured it out.
We started out Jesus Time with a “Ready, Set…Wait!” They kept telling me I was doing it wrong.
We heard about God’s plan for Abraham and Sarah and all of the waiting they had to do. Some
flannel figures helped us retell the story with the big flannel board. I leave these out during
center time and the children love to re-enact our Bible story.
We had to opportunity to “Serve in Song” this afternoon. We joined the 3 year old class to share
a song with some members of Timothy’s congregation. Many of these members are shut-in,
meaning they are no longer able to get to church on a regular basis on their own. A few
volunteers bring these members to this special service to hear the Word and receive communion.
We get to be a special part of it. Today we sang, “Two Little Eyes.”

Dear Parents,
We brainstormed some different uses for apples today after reading Apples. Everyone’s been
telling me their favorite thing to do with apples is to eat them so we REALLY worked our finemotor skills today as we peeled, cored, and sliced apples to make our own applesauce! The aroma
in the room was delicious! Unfortunately, it wasn’t finished cooking by the time my morning
students left. I’ve saved some for everyone to try though! As you can imagine, this cooking
adventure took quite a bit of our center time, so no special apple projects coming home today.
The children worked with Mrs. Beran creating a handprint alien for their Handprint Alphabet books.
Pastor Bill from Timothy Lutheran Church led our preschool chapel this morning. He shared some
Bible words about where our strength comes from. Can your child tell you where?

Dear Parents,
Each morning I’ve been changing our normal attendance on the smart board to a question about
apples for them to answer by placing their names in the appropriate spot. We’ve been using this
to make comparisons, count, and some letter recognition too as they now can identify words like
“Yes” and “No.”
We tasted our apple sauce today with mixed reviews. Some thought it was the best apple sauce
they ever ate, one wouldn’t try it, and others said it tasted like regular apple sauce. All in all, I
think they enjoyed the experience!
We read Apples Here and saw how an apple tree grows throughout the seasons each year. A
special song and video clip animated what we learned and we put our knowledge into our project
today. Can you child identify the seasons of their apple trees?
Students continue to fine tune motor skills making snips to strips of paper and creating their letter
A mosaic.
Zippy came to Jesus Time today and told us about a big surprise he has to wait for at his house,
just like. Abraham and Sarah had to wait in the Bible. Can your child tell you about it?

Dear Parents,
We emptied out our observations jars and took a closer look at the apples we’ve been keeping an
eye on all week. We saw many changes, most significantly in our jar with food coloring. Which jar
remained the most like an apple? The salt water jar!
We read Ten Apples Up on Top and did a counting activity with it. Worked our pincer grasp by
tearing paper to make mosaic apples, and made counting flip books helping us with number
recognition and one-to-one correspondence.

We turned off the lights and did some imagining of what we might look like as an old man or an old
woman like Abraham and Sarah. We watched a short skit about them too.
