QUALITY OF PLACE
Our quality of place is heavily influenced by a spectacularly
beautiful natural environment.
We are a recreational mecca with a temperate climate that encourages yearround outdoor activities. For water sports enthusiasts, there are rivers for
kayaking and rafting, lakes for boating and wind surfing, and inland waterways
for scuba diving or power/sailboat cruising. The Cascade and Olympic Mountains
offer trails to hike, bike, and ride horses, as well as peaks to climb in the summer
and ski in the winter. If you are looking for a weekend getaway, a three hour
drive to the east side of the Cascades takes you to an arid climate with orchards,
vineyards (and over 250 wineries) and fields of wheat.

Snohomish County is home to Boeing Commercial Airplanes and an
aerospace supply chain that produces the 747, 767, 777 and 787
aircraft. We are the states’ manufacturing center (with much more
than airplanes). Our employers produce medical devices, electronic
equipment, solar modules and inverters, pharmaceuticals,
recreation equipment and more.
Our proximity to Seattle makes Snohomish County a location for
high tech employers seeking a suburban location. T-Mobile has
an engineering center, Amgen (biotech) has a research facility,
Zumiez (retail) has their corporate headquarters, and Google
and AT&T have customer service centers. A few miles south
you will find the headquarters of Microsoft, Nintendo,
Starbucks, Amazon, Costco and REI. We are designated by
the State as the center of the medical device industry in
Washington. Two significant companies in the ultrasound
space, Philips and Sonosite, have headquarters and
manufacturing here.
Education
We are served by four higher education
institutions. Edmonds and Everett
Community Colleges offer associate’s
degrees, career and technical education,
and customized training for industry. The
University of Washington Bothell (UWB)
campus has recently created the School
of STEM (science, technology, engineering,
math) which combines all of the STEM fields in one
academic program, allowing for cross-disciplinary training
and project work. UWB also ranks second in the state in the annual production of
computer science degrees. Washington State University has established a presence
in Snohomish County and is offering mechanical and electrical engineering degrees.
Snohomish County is proud to have one of the seven K-12 STEM Networks in WA State.
WorkForce
The Snohomish County workforce has a strong technical
inclination. We have the highest concentration of advanced
manufacturing jobs West of the Rocky Mountains. Manufacturing
is 23% of our county workforce; twice the State average. Further,
we have the highest concentration of engineers in Washington,
working across multiple industries. Naval Station Everett, a
carrier base, produces close to 1000 separations of well-trained
employment candidates each year. Affordable housing and a
desirable quality of place continue to attract a workforce that has
grown by 20% over the past decade.

for companies with overseas markets
or offshore suppliers. 60% of our jobs
are associated with international trade.
The region has multiple deep-water
seaport facilities with worldwide shipping
connections. Our Port of Everett is the fifth
largest on the US West Coast (based on US
Customs export values). Container, break bulk and barge facilities are available with
on-dock rail to expedite multi-modal freight. The Port operates Foreign Trade Zone
#85, allowing firms to manage customs fees and duties. The county is served by the
Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad. Sea-Tac International is our regional airport,
served by major domestic carriers, and international carriers flying non-stop to Asia,
Europe, and the Middle East. Snohomish County Airport - Paine Field is a general
aviation facility with FAA approval to add scheduled commercial service.

SUSTAINABLE energy
The Public Utility District of Snohomish County (PUD), a not-for-profit electric utility owned
by the ratepayers, is progressive with a strong tie to sustainability. 86% of the energy
delivered by the PUD to its customers is hydroelectric, a renewable source. The
balance of their power portfolio is generated by solar and bio-mass. The PUD is exploring
tidal energy and geothermal resources.
