He will not show partiality in the case of a poor man; and he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged. He will not ignore the supplication of the fatherless, nor the widow when she pours out her story. Do not the tears of the widow run down her cheek as she cries out against him who has caused them to fall? He whose service is pleasing to the Lord will be accepted, and his prayer will reach to the clouds. The prayer of the humble pierces the clouds, and he will not be consoled until it reaches the Lord; he will not desist until the Most High visits him, and does justice for the righteous, and executes judgment. If you wish to contribute, please use the basket on the back table. . “Two hearts one Path Two Promises one covenant Two Lives, made one through Christ” Mr. and Mrs. Toriano Swain For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. At my first defense no one took my part; all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the message fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. Request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter Danielle Andrea And Jason Carlos Son of Mr. and Mrs. Abelardo Gonzalez At St. Stephen’s Church, Whiting NJ Saturday, the Fifth of November Two thousand and sixteen At Four O’clock Holy Gospel Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." Welcome to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church The gospel reading in the liturgy today has to do with our approach to God in prayer. It is not the proud Pharisee’s bragging prayer but the humble confession of the sinner which brings God’s response. Announcements October 23, 2016 A special thank you to everyone that contributed to ‘Noisy Sunday’ We raised 178.00! Our total for Cropwalk was 873.00! Thanks goes to Lillian Fink and Stefanie Rotsaert for walking. Prayer to send out LEMs with the Sacrament: Celebrant: N. we send you out to shar e Communion this week with those who have been entrusted to your care. People: May you car r y the pr ayer s of all of us as you take this Sacrament of Christ’s presence. Celebrant: Continues with a closing pr ayer . The writer of Sirach (also known as Ecclesiasticus) tells us much the same as the reading from Luke. When we approach God in pride, our way is blocked by our own ego. When we confess our wrongdoings, God hears and responds with forgiveness. The Sanctuary Candle is given to the Glory of God in Honor of Valerie Thompson The second reading is presented as Paul’s final words to Timothy when Paul was in prison and facing his imminent death. That approaching martyrdom finds Paul confident in the good he has done, but, like the tax collector, he is aware of his total dependence upon God. We, the community of faith, are put into right relationship with God not because of our success being good, but because we place our whole trust and confidence in God. We strive to give up all and follow Jesus not in order to earn God’s favor, but as our response to the unswerving love God has for us.
