Her flamboyant attitude did not impress the store manager, who ended up firing her. The boy’s flamboyant and outgoing personality attracted her. The large, pink flamingo waded in the water at the San Diego Zoo. Her cheeks were a shade of flamingo after seeing the boy who she liked smile at her. The mother removed the inflammable material from her child’s hands. The arsonist poured inflammable liquid all around the house before lighting up a match. The beautiful $1.4 million mansion was engulfed in flames. I light up the candle and watched the glowing flame. 2. He formatted his work space so it could be neat and tidy. He wore his brand-new uniform proudly. His uniform was dirty and torn from the war. We looked up at the cloud formations in the sky. As dancers, we have certain formations in certain dances. 4. The women cried as they learned that their loved ones died as a result of the warfare. Warfare and peace are not synonyms. In The Odyssey, Odysseus was a wayfarer who drifted the seas in search of his home. The wayfaring stranger walked and explored new lands. The tourists on the safari eagerly searched for lions. In Africa, we went on a safari. She held her hand to her heart as she thought of her husband who was in a faraway land. We traveled for 22 hours in an airplane to go to the faraway country of New Zealand. 5. Fer- to carry or bear Ex: ferry, infer, offer Additional words: refer, fertile The ferry carried Kerry to Staten Island. We waited for the ferry to take us to America. Sitting in traffic at 1:05 P.M., he inferred that he would be late for his 1:30 P.M. meeting. We inferred that the weather would be warm today. Seeing that his girlfriend struggled to carry all of her books and binders, he offered to carry them for her. We refused the offer to buy a reclining chair. The E.R. doctor referred the patient to a gastroenterologist. We referred the McTireds to take a vacation in Seychelles. The rich, luscious soil was fertile in nutrients. The land in South America is fertile and produces many crops. 6. Em- in, on Ex: embattled, embody, embrace Additional words: emphysema, embalm We embattled by saddling the horses and stringing our bows. Because we had embattled better than our foes, we won the war. We will embody the water into a glass. The squishy surface of the snail was embodied safely into its hard shell. As the sun sank slowly out of view, a sailor embraced his wife because he would be gone for two years. As we look onto the wrestling match, we see one person embracing the other in a full on headlock. To get rid of his emphysema, he was given a series of medication. Emphysema is caused by a collection of pus in a body cavity. The mummy was embalmed to preserve his body in the next life. Embalming was a common practice in ancient Egypt. 7. Ent- to be Ex: entity, absent, present Additional words: represent, abridgment The entity of hope is faith. Her overall entity was tranquility. The student was marked absent because he was not in his seat when the bell rang. Because the singer was absent from her show, the date was changed to the following Thursday. When the teacher called Sally's name, she politely responded by saying, "present." John was present when the game began earlier, even though most his team was not. The protesters were representing the movement for women’s voting rights. Susan’s mother represents exactly what I imagine a mother to be. The abridgment of Great Expectations is half of the original size of the book. The school day was abridged because of labor day. 8. Es- out of, away Ex: escape, escort, espresso Additional words: esophagus, estrogen To escape the rain, we ran under the balcony. The firefighter was able to escape the burning house before it collapsed. Oprah’s escort was able to pull her away from the raging fans. For Clare’s senior prom, her parents got a limo to escort her and her date to the building. An espresso is made by forcing live steam out of the coffee bean. My favorite type of coffee is espresso because of the rich flavor. The esophagus leads chewed up food to the stomach. When Jimmy had his esophagus injured, he wasn't able to eat for two weeks. A hormone in females is estrogen. Estrogen helps women increase their emotions. 9. Ev- age, eternity Ex: medieval, primeval, longevity Additional words: evolve, forever Medieval warriors often wore armor and rode horses. Back in medieval times, toilet paper was non-existent. Primeval plants were very simple plants. Primeval humans were more resembling to monkeys. Sea turtles are known for their longevity. Longevity is the ability to live for a long time. Over millions of years, humans evolved from monkeys. Evolution means change over time. It took forever, but we were finally able to buy a dog. Some people say the universe goes on forever in every direction. 10. Ed- to hear, listen Ex: obedient, obedience, disobedience Additional words: education, edema The dog was obedient and sat when he was told to. Obedient children are more respected when the get older. Obedience is the key to potty training your child. Obedience means to do what ever you are told to do. Disobedient children often got whipped forty years ago. The disobedient puppy was put in his crate for the rest of the day. His education got him his scholarship. Even though some people complain about getting an education, it will benefit them further on in their life. When Susan was pregnant, her ankles swelled up because of edema. Edema occurs when the ankles swell up during pregnancy. 11. Deci- tenth Ex: decibel, decimal, decimate Additional words: decile, deciliters His voice recorded to be 45 decibels of sound, which is no louder than the hum of an airconditioner. I was thrilled to discover that I could hear several decibels more than average for my age group. If you move the decimal to the right, the number increases; if you move it to the left, it decreases. When multiplying, be careful to put the decimal in the correct place – it makes all the difference. A single disease or pest could easily decimate the crop of an entire country. In colleges, students often remain in a dormitory so they don’t have to travel from school to home every day. Living in a dormitory is very different from living in your own personal room at home. He reminds me of a little dormouse, the way he curls up, with his little feet all tucked up. The hazel dormouse peeked out of its tiny hole, twitching its nose as it sniffed for danger. The wood was extremely dry and cracked easily due to the lack of moisture. You don’t have to be so dry and harsh to the boy; he made a simple and understandable mistake. He cannot countenance living in the community. Even though their harsh words hurt her, her face was countenance and didn’t betray any emotion. Everyone was excited for the annual festival held for the county. In my opinion, Orange County is the best place to live in Southern California. In first grade, the students first started learning counting numbers. She had trouble counting all of the wrong answers on her paper. 17. Counter- against, opposite Ex: counteract, counterargument, counterpunch Additional words: counterfeit, counterattack The argument she was trying to make was easy to be counteracted. Knowing that he could not be trusted, his words were easily counteracted. She could not think of a counterargument for the debate. The rebellious teenager had many counterarguments against his parents. He counterpunched his opponent unexpectedly. The boxer’s counterpunch knocked out his opponent. They said that they caught one of their teachers selling counterfeited DVDs. If you are caught buying counterfeit merchandise, you can be sent to jail. A counterattack was shortly followed after the first move. After being hit by the stranger who was a criminal, the girl used all her strength in her counterattack. 18. Everything that he touched was created into his many masterpieces. There was a creature living in the woods, down by the river. The child hid and cowered in his bed; hoping that the creature in his closet would not get him while he was sleeping. There was an increase in the gas prices because of the poor economy. Her test grade increased her grade dramatically. Every creak in the night made her wince. The burglar moved surreptitiously throughout the house without making a creak. She made a crease in her book when she left it in her backpack. His face creased into a beautiful smile. 19. Cut- skin Ex: cuticle, cutaneous, subcutaneous Additional words: cutback, cutis At the nail salon, they push back their cuticles before painting the nails. Did you know that your cuticles are just dead skin at the base of your nails? There is such an illness called cutaneous leishmaniasis. In futurology, you can forecast the upcoming computer technologies. A futurologist is a person whose occupation or specialty is the forecasting of future events, conditions, or developments. Neophyte: Neophytes are generally taken advantage of because of their ignorance in the area they have just begun. Everyone was once a neophyte in high school or a sport. Neonatal: After birth, babies are usually placed in neonatal care units to monitor their health. Baby stores offer a wide variety of neonatal accessories. Neolithic: The Neolithic Era was like a new civilization emerging for humans, where tools, writing, and art first really developed. Although the Neolithic period was still considered “stone age”, it was a time of great advancement and innovation for the human species. Neoprimitivism: Some people believe neoprimitivism is better, and create new works of art and literature based on older, simpler methods. Older people sometimes wish for a wave of neoprimitivism, believing society has gotten too complicated. 2. Metronomes consistently beat at a certain allotment of time. Nominate: A person in a position of authority is typically nominated into it. If you nominate a person for something, you believe they have the ability to perform the task in question. Nomism: In the middle ages, people obeyed nomisms religiously. The United States excludes nomisms from its constitution to ensure religious freedom. 3. Non – Not Nontoxic: Parents prefer to by nontoxic housecleaners to ensure their children don’t accidentally ingest something poisonous. Nontoxic pesticides are an oxymoron. Nonsense: One who has lost his mind tends to speak nonsense. Before a child learns to properly write, their attempts will be nonsense to most people. He can thank the orthodontist for his beautiful smile. Orthopedic: Jimmy went to school for many years to learn all he could about orthopedics. The boy had to go to the orthopedic doctor after falling out of the tree and breaking his arm. Orthogonal: Mathmeticians love studying orthogonal formulas. Geometry is based on the orthogonal equations of shapes and angles. Orthoepic: A hardcore English teacher could be considered an orthoepic. Reparability: The lifetime guarantee of the product left little need for a high reparability. Luke’s house was so ravaged by the storm that no level of reparability could be seen. Disrepair: The destroyed bathroom was in disrepair. The explosion left the town beyond disrepair. Impaired: The old, deaf man had impaired hearing. The accident left him physically impaired, restraining his ability to run around and play. Repairmen: Many different jobs fall under the category of repairmen. The plumbers took pride in their duty to be the best repairmen they could be. 10. Op(er) – work, to work Operation: D-Day was a massive operation for the Allied armies. Mr. Perkins worked as the head of operations for his company. Cooperate: The two students could not cooperate in trying to finish their group project. It is often tough to get extremists from both sides of an argument to cooperate. Opus: Beethoven’s most famous composition was a brilliant opus. To Kill a Mockingbird is an opus of literature and an example for all other authors to follow. Oppose: The lawyer will oppose the case that the defendant is guilty. One kid opposed the rest of his class to stand up for his friend whom everyone made fun of. Operable: The positive outlook is to always look at a dysfunctional item as operable. The old typewriter from the last century was hardly operable. 11. Plegia-paralysis or stroke Monoplegia: John’s monoplegia of his right hand confined him to only one sport, ping pong. If you have Blepharoplegia, you probably look as if you have a black eye every day. Japan is a country of imports due to its lack of its own natural resources. Export: The main exporters of oil include Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the US. Exports are good that are shipped out a country. 13. Pot-to have power Potential: Humans do not yet know how to harbor our full potential for strength. Arsenal F.C has the potential to be one of the greatest clubs in soccer. Potent: The potent alcohol concoction could easily intoxicate you with one sip. Rat poison is so potent that a few milligrams will kill a human. (Don’t get any ideas) Omnipotent: God is someone who is considered omnipotent, or someone who has unlimited power. A dictator feels as if he is omnipotent because he oppresses him people, creating a godless society making him the most powerful being alive.
