Keeping Families Close
“You’re pregnant!” are two words that fill many families with hope and joy, just like they did for Youngor Freeman. However, after
completion of a genetic screening, Youngor learned that her baby boy tested positive for 18q Deletion Syndrome, a chromosomal
condition with a wide variety of signs and symptoms among affected individuals.
Symptoms can range anywhere from cognitive and developmental delays to limb
abnormalities and congenital anomalies. Not knowing what to expect, Youngor
prepared for the birth of her son and hoped for the best.
Not only did the House offer a
To help her cope with the emotions brought on by the diagnosis, Youngor turned
to her faith and began to search for a strong name to give her son. She named
her son Shahaad Waheed, an Islamic name meaning, “declaration of faith” and
“unique.” Once she named her expected baby, Youngor felt more comfortable with
the diagnosis and talked to him every day using his name.
Shahaad was born early, and despite what doctors had prepared her for, Youngor
said he looked like a perfect, beautiful baby. After overcoming a period of weight
loss and bloating, Shahaad finally grew into his nickname, “Chunky,” and the
family began their “new normal” life.
place for Shahaad’s siblings
and father to stay when they
came to visit, but Youngor
also enjoyed the sense of
community she found here
However, shortly after his birth, Shahaad was taken to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
for emergency hospitalization for seizures due to complications from his condition. Youngor began
to work through finding the balance of supporting her family at home in Philadelphia and staying
strong for Shahaad at her new home in Wilmington at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware.
When Youngor learned about the Ronald McDonald House, she was happy just to have a
comfortable place to sleep. It wasn’t until Shahaad stabilized that she began to use the other
amenities and support systems that are offered at the House, like activities in the evenings,
transportation assistance, and even pet therapy. Over time, Youngor appreciated the home-like
environment that she says was more serene than the hospital, and gave her peace of mind. She
reflected, “I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for the Ronald McDonald House.”
Perhaps the most beneficial part of staying at the House for Youngor was the ability to stay
close to family. Not only did the House offer a place for Shahaad’s siblings and father to stay
when they came to visit, but Youngor also enjoyed the sense of community she found
here. At the House, she found a new “extended family” through other
parents, staff, and volunteers. She explained that being the parent of
a sick child can be very lonely, but at a place like the Ronald McDonald
House, everyone shares a similar bond.
Youngor shared that the House was a big part of the reason she was
able to stay so positive and happy during Shahaad’s treatment. After
several surgeries, their three month stay concluded and the family
returned home. The House will always hold a special place in Youngor’s
heart, and for that she is beyond thankful.

Greetings!
The last few months have been very busy at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware! On
October 22nd, the House celebrated our 25th anniversary with a spectacular Red Shoe Gala
held at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington. With nearly 300 people in attendance, the event
celebrated this important milestone in style with dining, dancing, and a great trip down
memory lane. We took time to recognize two important individuals who were instrumental
in the establishment of the very first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia, Jimmy
Murray and Audrey Evans, MD. Their vision inspired that first House, and the next 358 that
now exist in 44 countries around the globe, serving over 8000 families every single day.
What an amazing story!
In September, the House held its annual Golf Tournament at Wilmington Country Club.
Rainy conditions could not stop a record 200 golfers from enjoying a great round of golf and
raising over $200,000 to support the families who call the Ronald McDonald House their
home during the most trying times of their lives.
Events like the 25th Anniversary Red Shoe Gala and Golf Tournament are great fun, raising
awareness and critically important funds to support the ongoing operations of the House.
Nonetheless, when I reflect on these events, the most poignant moments for me are
the personal stories told by the very families that rely upon the House during their most
difficult times. At the Red Shoe Gala, for example, we were honored to host Levi and his
mom, Dona. Levi has traveled from New Orleans to Wilmington 13 times to receive care at
the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children for a most rare form of dwarfism. While
we enjoyed a very entertaining exchange between Levi and his Nemours physician, Will
Mackenzie, MD, Dona also reflected on how the Ronald McDonald House has become a
true “home away from home” during these trips. Dona, Levi, and so many other families rely
upon these comforts of home, coupled with the compassionate support from the staff and
volunteers of the House. This is what inspires me to serve the Ronald McDonald House, and
what I know inspires each of you to support it as well with your time, talent, and treasure.
As we approach the Holiday Season, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the amazing
resource we have in the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. For 25 years, thousands of
families have relied upon this special place for comfort and support. For the next 25 years,
your support will create new stories of healing and comfort, and a legacy for which all of us
can be proud.
On behalf of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, thank you for your friendship and
support!

“Walkway to Hope”
Recognition Program
The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware is celebrating 25 years
of keeping families close by creating a commemorative brick tile
entrance to the House.
The “Walkway to Hope” will be located directly in front of the main
entrance to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, and will be
adjacent to the very popular Ronald McDonald statue.
The new “Walkway to Hope” will be located directly
outside the main entrance to the Ronald McDonald
House of Delaware.
By purchasing a brick, you will be forever etched in the heart of the
House and will create a thoughtful remembrance for yourself or a
loved one. More importantly, you will help us continue to provide
a safe, comfortable and affordable place for families to stay that is
conveniently located near their child’s hospital, regardless of their
ability to pay.
You may purchase a brick online by visiting:

Share A Night, Light a Light
Give the gift of togetherness
Decorations are being hung, Christmas trees are being decorated,
service groups are busy baking and cleaning all in preparation
for our Annual Share A Night festivities. Our Share A Night
campaign focuses on the true meaning of the holiday season sharing and compassion for families in need.
Families that stay at our House are asked to contribute $15 dollars
a night, however, the actual cost of operating a guest room is
$72 a night. In the face of mounting medical bills and other
associated financial pressures, many families cannot afford even
this small amount. It is your contribution through Share A Night
that allows us to keep our requested donation at $15 a night and
provide lodging for families in need.
For every $15 donation by an individual, family, organization,
school or business, one holiday light is added to the outside of
our House and property. Then, to commemorate the efforts of all contributors, a lighting ceremony is held to symbolize
the generosity and compassion of everyone involved where each donor can see a light, an outward, visible symbol of their
generosity.
Once again, Richard and Linda Faucher and their children of Bear, Delaware, who are well-known for displays of holiday
house lights, will be hanging the lights and decorating the exterior of our House.
Schools and organizations are encouraged to organize projects to contribute “lights” for the House. There are sponsorship
packages for businesses, civic groups and individuals that would like to be involved with Share A Night, from a $5,000 Gift of
Love to a $250 Gift of Hope. Call Dawn Brooks, Special Events Manager, at 302-428-5315 for more information.
Individuals who contribute to Share A Night may do so as a memorial or tribute gift for a special occasion, such as a holiday
remembrance in a friend or loved one’s name.
The tradition continues as we prepare for the annual Lighting Ceremony and party on Thursday, December 15, 6:00-7:00 pm
with light refreshments.
For more information on how you, your group or business can become involved, call 302-428-5315 or complete the form and
mail it to the House at the address listed.

Recap
Events
Three hundred friends of the House gathered at the Hotel du Pont on Saturday, October 22 to celebrate the House’s 25th Birthday.
The 25th Anniversary Celebration included a walk down memory lane with our Heritage Trivia Game where guests could test their memory of House
facts and win great prizes. The evening program featured a welcome by Co-Chairs Mary Bowler and Paul Kempinski followed by remarks and an
invocation by Dr. Audrey Evans and Jimmy Murray, co-founders of the first Ronald McDonald House. After enjoying a delicious meal, guests were
entertained by Levi and his mom Dona along with Dr. Will Mackenzie. Levi, a little person, wowed the crowd with his giant personality and stories.
Red shoes could be seen everywhere as the guests danced the night away with live music from the band Strangers.

Thank You For a Record Breaking Year!
Despite a gloomy, rainy start our 28th Annual Golf Tournament broke all records and raised
over $200,000 for our families. This would not be possible without the leadership of Perry
Beberman and Joel Dukart, Golf Co-Chairs and the great support of our golf committee, sponsors,
participants and donors.
Golfers enjoyed a delicious barbeque lunch before teeing off, followed by a cocktail hour
featuring our Helicopter Ball Drop. Guests were treated to a three course dinner while MC/
Auctioneer Jeff Hammond got the crowd going during our live auction and Adopt A Family.
Wendy Rogers spoke to guests about her experience at the House and how the House has helped her and her son, Garrett,
as he recovers from being hit by a drunk driver in Millsboro, Delaware while trying to retrieve a baseball.
Special guest Dottie Pepper entertained the guests with stories, posed for photos and mingled with guests.

House Volunteers
In September, the House held three successful special events to raise awareness
and funding including the annual Lewes 5K, Golf Tournament, and Talleyville
Fire Company’s Classic Car Show. The events were a success due in part to
the support of our special event volunteers that helped to make sure things
ran smoothly behind the scenes on the day of these events. Volunteers will
also help us during the coming holiday season to prepare the House for the
annual Share A Night celebration on December 15. Volunteers will staff the
Holiday Workshop to ensure families have an opportunity to select toys for
their children to enjoy during the season. Whether through baking, preparing
meals, or providing caroling and holiday crafts, volunteers help to bring the
spirit of the season to the House for families that will call it their “home away
from home” during the holidays.
The fall is a popular season for volunteering, thanks in part to the United Way
Days of Caring Campaign and the holiday spirit of giving. We are fortunate
to receive many volunteer inquiries during this period, and continue to need
volunteers to help with our programming and special events throughout the
year. We are now booking volunteer opportunities post-holidays into 2017
and throughout the spring. If you are seeking a volunteer opportunity for your
familiy, civic association, co-workers, church, or a scout group, Group and Family volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year.
Popular group opportunities include the meal program, yard work, cleaning days, and hosting a Family Activity after dinner for families to
enjoy each night. A Group and Family Volunteer Calendar is available on our web site at www.rmhde.org/volunteer under the Group and
Family Volunteer heading.
Help Wanted: Winter Volunteers!
We are seeking volunteers to help us with daily operations at the House during the winter months of JanuaryMarch. This time of year is a popular time for volunteers to take a leave of absence to head to a warmer climate.
The House is operated seven days per week between 9am and 9pm by our House Volunteers. These volunteers,
age 16 and older, commit to a minimum of 6 hours per month and train to help with Front Desk hospitality, assist
with tours for newly arrived families, preparing guest rooms, restocking patnries, and kitchen duty.
If you or someone you know is seeking a volunteer opportunity to help make the House a comforting
environment, and is available during the winter months, please contact Sara Funaiock, Volunteer Manager, at
302-428-5340 or at [email protected] to learn more about volunteer opportunities. A Volunteer Application
is also available at www.rmhde.org/volunteer.

Adopt A Room Spotlight
Ronald’s Rescue – a group of high school students from Padua
Academy adopted two rooms this year through their fundraising
efforts. They organized a pancake breakfast and a wiffle ball
tournament to raise money for the House. Some of the students also
volunteer at the House and help with our special events.
Members of Ronald’s Rescue take complete ownership of the events.
They understand the importance of their fundraising efforts and how
they directly impact the families we serve at the House.
In our hearts...
How very softly you tiptoed into our
world, but only a moment you stayed.
What an imprint your footsteps have left
among our hearts.

This is just one story of how a group of high school students participate
in the Adopt A Room program! A gift of $5,000 or more helps offset
the cost to operate one guest room for one year.
For more information on how you can get involved, call Barbara
Loeslein at 302 428-5331 or [email protected].
Planned Giving
When you extend your support of the Ronald McDonald House
of Delaware with a gift in your Will, you join a visionary group of
donors… the Legacy of Hope Society.
Along with your personal satisfaction of giving back to the House
additional benefits include:
• Flexibility – you are free to alter your estate plans at any time.
• Security – you retain control over your assets should you need them
during your lifetime.
• Versatility – you can structure your planned gift in different ways to
ensure that your gift remains proportionate to your estate size.
For more information on our Legacy of Hope Society and
how to join this group of donors please call Barbara Loeslein,
Development Director, at 302-423-5331 or [email protected].
Ronald McDonald Family Rooms
Keep Families Close within the Hospital
Located at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children,
Christiana Hospital, and Bayhealth Kent General, the Ronald
McDonald Family Rooms extend the mission of the Ronald
McDonald House. So far in 2016, the Family Rooms have provided a
source of rest and relaxation for over 7,500 families.
The Family Rooms provide many sources of comfort for families
visiting the hospital, including meals, access to personal care items,
and friendly volunteers.
Meals provide both physical and emotional comfort for families who
visit the Family Rooms. Dinners are provided at our Family Rooms
at Christiana Hospital and Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for
Children, and are generously provided by donors including Domino’s
Pizza (Marsh Road location), Brio Tuscan Grille, Bertucci’s Italian
Restaurant, and Crossroads Restaurant. Families can also enjoy
breakfast at the Christiana Family Room on the third Friday of the
month, which is provided courtesy of gift cards from Kenny Family
ShopRites.

Volunteer Spotlight:
Marsh Uebler
Over the past 18 years, Marsh Uebler has spent over 2,000 hours
volunteering in the Ronald McDonald Family Room in the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Christiana Hospital in Newark,
Delaware. Her volunteer duties include welcoming children to the
playroom, providing supervision to children as needed, helping
keep the Ronald McDonald Family Room clean and supporting
families seeking respite from the hustle and bustle from the
hospital. In addition, Marsh is very helpful in training new
volunteers and providing feedback at volunteer meetings. Most
importantly, Marsh, and volunteers like her, provide a comforting
presence for families with a child in the NICU.
Thanks to the Delaware Farm Bureau’s annual donation on National
Food Checkout Day, our Ronald McDonald Family Room at Bayhealth
Kent General remains stocked with snacks, drinks, and small meals
throughout the year.
Our Family Rooms are staffed by a dedicated team of 40 volunteers
who make sure the spaces are warm and welcoming. Thanks to the
community’s ongoing support, we are able to help families find a
relaxing space where they can stay close to their child in the hospital.
Questions about the Ronald McDonald Family Room program may
be directed to Erin Ryan, Community and Family Room Coordinator,
at [email protected] or 302-428-5322.
We definitely recommend
this to other families in
need of rest during their
children’s treatments and
appointments!
Our Donors
We are so thankful for our donors
who help us carry out our mission.
