For Leanne Bowden it began as a classic case of getting roped in. Leanne moved to Eynesbury more than 2 years ago and loves getting out to enjoy “the open spaces, the community feel and the lovely style of the houses and streets”. One day around a year ago, the local resident and businesswoman was visiting the homestead for a coffee when Leanne Christie, the Melton Council, Active Communities Officer, happened to be there too. Ms. Christie commented that she thought Leanne Bowden would make an excellent walking group leader and so began the “Eynesbury morning walkers” and through fair and foul weather they’ve never looked back. “I don’t know if I was in the right place at the right time or the right place at the wrong time”, laughs Leanne, “but we’ve stuck to it and had a lot of fun along the way”. There are now 10 regular walkers who meet each morning in the pro shop car park around 10am and for the next 40 minutes they pound the pavements for fun and fitness and a bit of a natter before convening the homestead for a coffee and more chat. “It’s probably our tongues that get the most exercise but we don’t take ourselves too seriously and we do get to lose weight, improve our fitness and get to know people we might not otherwise meet”, said Leanne. The group has now attracted an eclectic mix with young mums, senior citizens and other residents just trying to improve their fitness. The Eynesbury walkers have also been visited by interested folk from outside the area who simply want to see the local environment and the other things the town has to offer. “When we get visitors we often take them through the forest and point out some of the other heritage buildings around the place”, said Leanne. Leanne would love to build the group’s numbers and currently enjoys support from the National Heart Foundation and the City of Melton. Some of the more enthusiastic members have even stretched their wings and joined the “fit for life” program which is run by the council in Melton. www.eynesburygolf.com.au Eynesbury stories We want your stories and we are prepared to pay – well, sort of. COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION NEWS Since the last edition there has been a constant flow of people making the smart move to live in the best little town in the country. The first new homes in Stage 4 are already being built, with residents due to be moving in well before the end of the year. Congratulations to the Eynesbury Events Committee for organising the Solstice Celebration on 21st June. Although it was held on a chilly winter’s night, the Celebration was such a great success it will be on again next year, so put it in your diary now! In the burned areas of the Native Grasslands, native grass seeds sown into bare areas over winter are already germinating. Spring will also encourage new growth of native grasses, herbs and ground covers. In the forest the wattles are blooming and bird and animal life is becoming more active as 2 Eynesbury is the ideal climate for growing Proteas and Leucadendrons. Our new arrivals of ‘Devils Blush’ (pictured), is a great choice for a low hedge or border for a garden bed, with its devilish deep red bracts. For more varieties come visit us Monday to Friday 8-3pm or on the First Saturday of every month 9-3pm. They do not like too much water, these plants are drought tolerant. Eynesbury is on recycled water which is high in phosphorus, therefore, when using fertiliser ensure it is low in phosphorus. When establishing a Protea or Leucadendron, pruning is a marvellous idea. Prune back to the new growth for a neat, compact bush. In about a year the plant will grow with many colourful bracts all over the bush. the season changes. Along the Heritage Trail toward the Shearing Shed Complex, trees, shrubs and ground covers are beginning to grow well after transplanting. Spray regimes are being used to reduce the incidence of pest weed infestations along the trail, and boxthorn has been cleared from a number of areas. In the east section of the forest two new access tracks have been made, running north from the farmers access track, connecting with the old north boundary track, making a full circuit. These tracks have been made to give maintenance crews and equipment access to more of the forest. Already significant amounts of serrated tussock have been sprayed out. If you want to take a leisurely stroll to view some of the more pristine areas of the forest please allow about one hour for the journey. Birdlife abounds along these paths, and the occasional kangaroo can be seen. If you go walking in these areas, please DO NOT take dogs with you. Dogs are specifically banned from the Forest and Grassland by the Eynesbury Development Plan. Around town, work crews have been busy spreading topsoil and sowing the nature strips in Stage 9, with Stages 7C and 11 still to be done. Rain gardens and regular garden beds are also being renovated. Any nature strips that have not been repaired while homes were being constructed will be done in spring. Grasses have had their annual prune and mulching of garden beds is continuing. Despite the very dry autumn, the recent rains means that Eynesbury is ready to burst with spring growth! We can look forward to the home gardens becoming showpieces in their own right, township streetscapes maturing and looking great, just proving that Eynesbury is a fantastic place to call home. Ian Matthews Community Association Officer Northcote Camp is great fun. From Exford Principal Lisa Campo Our Year 2 kids had their Camp last week and travelled to Glenmore (about 25 mins away) to the Lady Northcote Camp, where despite the wintry weather, the kids had a great time. As usual, our kids were beautifully behaved and were all asleep at a respectable hour. The children took part in Bush Cooking, Low Ropes courses, Orienteering, were very brave on the Giant Swing and the Flying Fox and enjoyed their ‘dining out’ experiences in the Dining Hall. It’s fun seeing your friends (and your teachers) in their jammies and sharing cabins with a small group of friends. Pancakes for breakfast is always a treat. French night a fantastique success. It was a case of Paris in Eynesbury at the recent French Dinner & Movie night at the Homestead restaurant! Canapés, including garlic snails were served in the elegant billiard room, followed by paté, beef bourginon and coq au vin in the restaurant to the strains of Edith Piaf and accompanied by a French themed quiz. Cheese platters were served during the movie “Midnight in Paris”, which was shown in the Baillieu Room, however, most of the 40 residents attending were too full to finish them. The next themed night at the Homestead restaurant will be a Greek Dinner Dance, held on Friday 6th September from 6pm. Get your Zorba on with the Pegasus Dance School, then enjoy a three course Greek feast, with a little bit of fun along the way! Bookings are essential on 99710402,placesare$47.50perperson. Nella on the giant swing Western Water’s Water Plan in place for 2013-18 Water bills for an average customer will go up by less than one dollar a week for homeowners and around 28 cents a week for tenants this year under Western Water’s new Water Plan. Under the Water Plan 2013-18, tiered pricing for water usage will remain, which means higher water users pay more for their water. Price rises are spread out over the five years, rather than a large upfront increase, in line with feedback Western Water received from customers during the Water Plan consultation process. “We have worked hard to keep price rises as low as possible, while maintaining our service levels and planning for our growing population,” Western Water’s Managing Director, Neil Brennan, says. Under the Water Plan 2013-18 Western Water will be continuing its focus on developing sustainable, liveable communities such as Eynesbury. Over the next five years in the Eynesbury and Melton region we will be: • Using local water supply (from Merrimu reservoir) for Melton customers, to reduce the amount of water being purchased from the Melbourne supply. • TurningtheEynesburytanks(locatedonGreen Hill) to full operation to improve water supply security. During this change, scheduled to occur in mid-2013, Eynesbury residents may notice a slight reduction in water pressure. • Completing an $8.8 million upgrade of the Melton Recycled Water Plant. • Completinga$5.3millionupgradeoftheClass A Recycled Water Plant. “We understand that some customers are doing it tough, and will be impacted by any price rise,” Mr Brennan says. “We urge anyone who is having trouble paying their water bill to contact us for a confidential chat so we can help with a range of support programs.” Western Water will be in town on Wednesday 4 September at the Eynesbury Homestead Café, from 10am to 1pm, to answer any questions customers may have about their bills, our services or projects in the area. The new Water Plan 3 came into effect on 1 July 2013. CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY Western Water is coming to town! We will be in Eynesbury to answer any questions you may have about bills, services or projects in your area. We will also be demonstrating how to conduct a recycled water connection test on your property. We are planning another trip next March to join in the 2014 Friends Pick event (stay tuned to the Wine & Food Group on the portal for information). Last stop was Del Rios at Anakie. By Petra Pike and Del Rios wineries. Twenty enthusiastic wine and food buffs boarded the bus at the Discovery Centre on Saturday 17 August and headed down to the Moorabool Wine Region visiting the Lethbridge, Clyde Park At Lethbridge, winemaker Maree Collis shared the history of the winery and the background of each wine, each complimented with biscuits and Meredith cheese. Ninety minutes went very Coffee and dessert was enjoyed by a few in between tasting these fine wines. It was great to see new faces on this trip and meet some of our neighbours. Eynesbury committee candidates 2013 Leigh Francis With a background in educational leadership I understand the value of a supportive community, which can enhance opportunities for its children and the provision of a high quality of life for its residents. I have been actively involved in ensuring that the natural features of Eynesbury; the forest, gorge, grasslands, fauna and flora are not compromised so that they can be enjoyed by current and future residents. Additionally I would advocate for a plan of action to be implemented to minimize the number of mynah birds infesting our township. I support the judicious application of the building guidelines as they maintain building standards thus sustaining higher property values. I also believe that energy efficiency and sustainability should be a key principle in the application of the guidelines. I also support the continuation of the organization of community building events to maximise opportunities for residents to meet and get to know each other, strengthening the bonds of community. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the residents of our growing community. Jim Cooper I am currently a serving member of the Owners Corporation since its inception. I currently hold the position as the convenor of the Safety and Security Sub Committee. My wife is currently an active member of the events committee and we both have given many hours of time in the past few years supporting our community. My background is that I am a government employed Emergency Services worker for the past 20 years and hold the position as the Captain of our local Eynesbury Fire Brigade. I have a passion for road safety and are very proactive in liaising with our local Melton Highway Patrol and Council in providing a safe environment for our township. The skills I bring to the position and my principal interests in assisting the community: My emergency services experiences as well as a company director of a successful business that has been operating for over 17 years with 10 employees and my passion and commitment to our community. Jason Saliba I was born and raised in Launceston, Tasmania. I moved to Melbourne 10 years ago. In the last 10 years I have attended Victoria University were I completed an Advanced Diploma in Tourism management. I spent a year in Los Angeles working for Qantas International as guest services crew. Returned home to gain employment with Virgin Australia, the airline I currently work for as a guest service supervisor. Within this time, I have completed a lot of International and domestic travel, married my now wife Sarah and have been living in Eynesbury since June 2012, preparing to extended our family with our first baby due in October. I have a passion for sport, fitness, golf and my beloved Collingwood magpies. I see myself as a very happy outgoing person, who loves meeting new people and striving to achieve whatever I put my mind too. I feel I would be a benefit to the Eynesbury community as I have a real passion and desire to watch this community grow to its full potential. I believe that I can bring excitement, energy and help push growth to the area. I would like to bring the perspective of a young family to the committee with the future of my family and the community in mind. I love living in Eynesbury and feel that it has so much more to offer. I would like to be a part of the development and growth and hope one day to tell my son that his dad helped build Eynesbury. Nicolle Russell I’m 39 years old and my family and I moved in to Eynesbury 1 year ago. Currently I’m the Early Years Performing Arts Teacher at Brookside College in Caroline Springs. I enjoy spending time with my family and going on walks around Eynesbury. One of my greatest hobbies is photography. The skills I bring to the position and my principal interests in assisting the community: I would like to be on the Eynesbury Committee as I love living in Eynesbury and would like to be an active member of the community. I was a member of the Melton West Primary School committee for a short time when my children attended there during 2011. I think it is important that events and infrastructure continue to bring the community of Eynesbury closer together to build a stronger future for all members of the community and I would like to be a part of this. Recently I led a section of our community on the issue of the local school bus to have it re-instated. I feel that while this issue was contested by other members of the community that it was important to be the voice for the people who it did effect. I am a friendly and approachable person and feel that I would be a positive member of the Eynesbury committee. Joel Clapham I am a marketing and communications professional within the not-for-profit financial services industry. Over the past fifteen years I have built a reputation for representing and advocating on behalf of university students and my industry. Good governance and a sound ethical framework are imperative for all operations to succeed and achieve their objectives. The skills I bring to the position and my principal interests in assisting the community: At the core of all progress and advancement must be a commitment to providing genuine services and benefits to the people we represent. I am passionate about active citizenship and community service. I beleve all of us have an obligation and duty to collectively foster a community in which individuals, families and children can enjoy the camaraderie that makes a town home. The next decade will pass quicker than we expect, and by then our town will have a large population of teenagers, for whom we need to create opportunities for employment, social interaction, safety and welfare, and a spirit of community. We must start this work now if we are to avoid the pitfalls of other estates and fail to prepare for the next generation. Tomorrow’s social harmony is something we must build today! Philip Pike My wife and I have lived in Eynesbury for four years and I am a senior teacher in a local school. I have served on the OC committee for four years; the first two years on the OC committee, I chaired the environmental and sustainability subcommittee and for the past two years I have chaired the community development subcommittee. I developed and collated the survey of residents which resulted in the establishment of some 20 community groups. My goal, if re-elected, would be to assist each group to further develop their activities to include more residents, involve new residents in these groups and to promote new community groups. My approach is to bring a balanced, long term view to community issues which will benefit all members of the Eynesbury community. Robert Nikoloski I currently work for Metcash as a Demand Planning Manager. I have been a loyal employee and have been part of this amazing organization for nearly 11 years. I am a father to an amazing 4 year old boy and a husband to a beautiful wife. We also have a small Conveyancing business and employee 2 local residents. Our office is based in Caroline Springs The skills I bring to the position and my principal interests in assisting the community: Strong management skills and experience with running a small business. I have also had the pleasure of being a club secretary and a manager of sporting club based in Geelong. Finance is also something I enjoy, I run our small business books and have some accounting skills. We fell in love with Eynesbury hence us moving there shortly. I want to be part of a team that can achieve some great things for our small community and especially for our kids. Safety of our kids is a key priority to our success. I have also had experience in marketing events and getting sponsorship for my sporting club (sporting gear and clothing). In a conclusion regardless of the outcome I will always give up time to assist in any matters involving our community. Garrick Oates Before moving to Australia I served on two different body corporate committees as the chairperson. The first for 2 years (until we moved) and the second for a year. The skills I bring to the position and my principal interests in assisting the community: I believe in putting the good of the whole community first and try to help people enjoy their/our community. I studied a bit of law at university and enjoy learning the ins and outs of how the OC laws work in Australia - as opposed to South Africa where they are slightly different in some areas, vastly different in others, and still the same in particular fields. Greg Heafield I have been a member of the Owner’s Corporation (O/C) since its inception in 2009. I am the current chair person of the O/C and are an active member of the Community Events, Community Development, Safety sub committees. I am also convener of the Eynesbury Heritage Group and give many presentations concerning the history of this historic property. My goals are to ensure that each lot owner’s contribution to the O/C and hence the Community Association (CA) is spent wisely and of benefit to the O/C and not the developer. I am endeavoring to fix the undemocratic process that the CA has in respect to voting rights for projects and contracts. We currently provide 90% of the funding but only get 20% of the say in how those funds are spent. I intend to fix this problem and ensure that O/C members have their say. Formerly a Detective Senior Sergeant in the Victoria Police force for some 35 years, I now work casually for the Melton council in their Aged Care Divisions. I am married with 3 adult children and 4 grand children and have lived here in Eynesbury since 2009 The skills I bring to the position and my principal interests in assisting the community: I am currently a very active member of the Community Events and have been behind the inception of the Children’s Christmas party, the New Years Eve event, the Winter Solstice and the photography exhibition. 5 New head pro at Eynesbury golf Paul Christie, an AA rated golf professional, is our new head professional – we asked Paul to introduce himself. Born in Geelong I was introduced to golf at the age of 7. I played junior golf at Geelong Golf Club. I represented the club in Pennant from the age of 14. I was a representative in the Geelong and District team at both junior and senior level and also was in the coke young achievers squad. I won a few junior events including the Geelong and District Championships and won a few Club Junior Championships, match play and fourball events. I moved to Queensland at the age of 21 to turn Professional. I spent time at Novotel Twin Waters Resort as the Trainee Professional where I learnt a lot about resort golf. In my third year I was the Trainee Captain of Queensland. I then moved to Pelican Waters as the Head Golf Professional and run a golf team of over 20 staff to open the famous Greg Norman Designed Pelican Waters. Through my time I was a part of some fantastic golf days including the Holden Scramble National Final, the Jack Newtown Celebrity Classic and many corporate days for charity’s and sporting groups. I used to teach many celebrities including Greg’s Mum Toini, she loved my bunker lessons. I played Tournament Golf for a while after leaving Pelican Waters. I travelled around the “Troppo Tour” mainly and down throughout Australia following the events. I played a few events overseas but my shoulder injury certainly slowed down my career. The Eynesbury Golf Professional’s job was certainly on my radar especially when my parents live on course and then just 200 yards away my sister and her family also live on course. I am now based back in Geelong with Rebecca and our two boys Max and Jack. I certainly look forward to meeting you all as time goes by and if you need anything to help your golf please don’t hesitate to call. Good Golfing Paul Christie Meet our Members Finding peace on the fairways Fred Minehan is one of the foundation members of Eynesbury. He joined almost 5 years ago when memberships were first released. Fred loves the challenge of the course and the peacefulness of the area, in fact he loves it so much he bought a former display home and moved his family in. Now his daughter has also bought a block and is building a home at Eynesbury. Eynesbury Homestead Bridal Expo Sunday 13th October 2013 Fred is a shift worker so he gets to play the course regularly, normally 2-3 times per week. Due to his work commitments, Fred is a midweek member and that suits him just fine. He has seen Eynesbury develop from its beginnings and now enjoys the friendships that the club provides. “Most of all I just really love the area and the quality and challenge the golf course provides although I have to say the length of the course really finds me out. “Once you learn to play the course you can have a lot of enjoyment out there”, said Fred. 10am to 4pm, entry is free. Last year’s winners pictured (attachment) Lee Delaney, Steven Leach, Danny Del-re, Trent Chamberlain will be out again to defend their title. Golf Tip - Short Putting Everyone seems to miss those short putts now and again, but missing a few every round starts to add up very quickly and can destroy a score. The most common fault I see with short putting is a short/ stabbing stroke which normally occurs from a larger back swing and decelerating on the down swing. The most important thing to do on a short putt is too keep a nice smooth rhythm throughout the stroke and not get too quick. The length that the putter is brought back should be the same length that the putter goes through. This will provide a more consistent stroke and hopefully prevent those strokes adding up quickly.
