THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Dear Friends,
How often we hear the expression, “Hindsight is 20/20”! Typically it
comes as a reminder it is easier to critique than create. When we look
back at progress, we often forget the groundbreaking initial vision that
first put people and passion into motion.
Hindsight may be 20/20 but visions of positive community change
are clear in the hearts of those who see a better future. In our 20th
Anniversary year, we celebrate both our beginning and how far we
have come.
Community Shares of Colorado was founded in 1986 by a small
but resourceful group that envisioned “opening” workplace giving to
include innovative, community-based nonprofit organizations. The
original federation was made up of 12 local nonprofit members and
raised $4,000 its first year.
We have grown to represent 114 member organizations with statewide
outreach and surpassed $1.4 million in contributions in the 20052006 Community Giving Campaign! We now participate in over
160 employee giving programs, have an audience of over 200,000
employees annually, and distribute funds to over 170 nonprofits. Our
healthcare to over 22,000 uninsured Coloradans at Inner City Health
Center, distributing over 250,000 quality meals to homes of people
with life threatening illness at Project Angel Heart, preserving over
10,000 acres of open space at Colorado Open Lands, and recycling over
45,000 tons of waste material at Eco-Cycle… each year!
Your continued investment in us leverages a high return. We met or
exceeded many of the goals outlined in our strategic plan, “Community
Shares 2010”.
1. G
oal: Increase Community Giving Campaign 5-8% annually.
Outcome: Increase of over 18% in 2005-2006 to an all-time high.
2. Goal: Reduce our administrative fees.
Outcome: Reduced fee by .5% in year one (2005) of a three
year fee reduction plan to 15% by 2008.
3. Goal: Achieve fiscal accountability benchmarks annually.
Outcome: We earned the Charity Navigator 4 Star rating
(its highest) for sound fiscal management in 2006.
4. Goal: Recruit outstanding member nonprofit agencies.
Outcome: We recruited six premier new member nonprofits
for a total of 114, an all time high.
This year we celebrate our 20th anniversary and strive to pursue
the vision of our founding members to cultivate philanthropy and
community investment by connecting the people of Colorado to the
charities and causes they care about most.

the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado, and a Community Shares

on its commitment to offering diverse and inclusive fundraising.
In her speech to the Community Shares crowd, Keynote Speaker Dottie

can, where you are now.” Ms. Lamm reminded the group that for as
little as 50 cents a week, a donor can help a pet get neutered or provide
child care or prenatal care for the uninsured. “You can change your
corner of the world, and that’s what makes a difference.”

Community Leader of the Year:
Volunteers of the Year:
• The Honorable Andrew Romanoff
• David and Carol Sue Friedman
Andrew Romanoff is the Speaker of the Colorado House of
Representatives, the first Democrat to hold that post since 1975.
Mr. and Mrs. Friedman have been long time supporters of Community
Shares. Not only have they made a generous financial investment over
time, they have lent a hand with everything from folding and mailing
newsletters, working the Harvest Run, setting up for Art Shares 2005,
and attending many events. Community Shares is deeply indebted to
the Friedman’s for their significant support of Community Shares and
its mission. Their commitment to building community is an inspiration
and we thank them for all that they do.
Rep. Romanoff was elected to the House in 2000 and reelected in 2002,
2004 and 2006. The Denver Post described Speaker Romanoff as one
of Colorado’s most effective legislators. He was a key leader in bringing
about the passage of Referendum C in 2005 and steered 25 bills through
the Republican-controlled House in his first two terms, including laws that
expand the supply of affordable housing, provide treatment for substance
abuse and mental illness, and protect the victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault.
In the legislature’s “off-season,” Rep. Romanoff teaches political science
at the Community College of Aurora. He has also taught at Red Rocks
Community College and at the University of Colorado’s Graduate School
of Public Affairs. He first began teaching in Central America and speaks
fluent Spanish.

expand its community presence.
