James Madison Born March 16, 1751 4th President of the United States (1809-1817) James Madison (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was the 4th President of the United States. James Madison was referred to as the “Father of the Constitution.” Madison helped create the office of president and set up the system of checks and balances. He also helped create the U.S. federal system. During Madison’s time in office, the War of 1812 was fought, Louisiana and Indiana became states and Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner.
