MISSION
STATEMENT
Our mission is to foster
intellectual growth and
emotional strength
in adolescent girls,
preparing them for
the demands
of high school, college,
and young adulthood.
Dear prospective Santa Fe Girls’ School girls and families,
Thank you for your interest in the Santa Fe Girls’ School.
The Girls’ School offers middle-school age girls a learning environment that
is attuned to girls’ needs during this critical developmental period. As a small
school committed to girls in grades six through eight, we provide a culture that
nourishes girls to develop into self-advocating, confident, and academically
prepared high school students.
We believe that a balanced, inclusive classroom provides the best learning community, and we value the diverse perspectives students bring to our classrooms. We
seek to bring together students with varying cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. You will find our admissions process to be individualized and personal,
with each student admitted on her own unique strengths and merits.
A love of learning is one of the overriding characteristics that our students share.
Other selection criteria include a girl’s motivation and her willingness to be a
positive contributor to a cooperative community.
We realize that this is a very important decision for your student and your family
and encourage you to call or email us with any questions you may have.
We invite you to discover the advantages of a small, all-girls middle school
designed for these developmentally significant years.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our school and community with you.
Sincerely,
SERVING GIRLS IN GRADES

This School does an amazing job. I have been teaching there fifteen years and
seen class after class of girls change into their own womanhood and power.
It is the most thoughtful staff and curriculum I have ever encountered.

SCHOOL CULTURE & EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
The Santa Fe Girls’ School is a middle school solely dedicated to girls
I will carry the strength with
me, throughout my entire life,
and that is the ability to work
independently.
— Chiara, Class of 2011
in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Our mission is to foster intellectual growth and
emotional strength in adolescent girls, preparing them for the demands of high school,
college and young adulthood. In the course of their education at the Girls’ School,
girls develop into strong advocates for themselves and their world, able to meet the
challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century as evolving young leaders
and global citizens.
With this educational philosophy as its guiding principle, the Girls’ School has created
a high school preparatory curriculum that exceeds the requirements of the state of
New Mexico and the Santa Fe Public Middle School Performance Standards.
We believe that diversity in the classroom creates excitement for learning; multiple
perspectives from the students provide stimulus for lively debate, depth of thought
and informed opinion. Additionally, the experience of diversity within our community
builds capacity for understanding and emotional intelligence in our students. We see
education as a dynamic, open-ended and very personal process that requires dialogue
and the exchange of ideas among students and teachers. Our practice of seminar-style
teaching guides students to learn how to think, rather than what to think.
Santa Fe Girls’ School, a private, nonprofit school, was co-founded in 1998 by
Program Director Lee Lewin, with the aim of providing a nurturing yet academically
rigorous environment to enable adolescent girls to find their voices. The school was
designed to offer Santa Fe girls the advantage of single-gender education strengthened
by the school’s intentionally small size during an important developmental window.
Our students learn in a school culture that fosters the development of inner strength
and self-awareness and emphasizes each girl’s individual voice as a valuable piece of the
greater whole. As a result, our graduates embrace a diplomatic approach
to life that enhances the values of kindness and consideration of others and allows them
to succeed not only as scholars, but also as vital community members and leaders.

we foster intellectual growth and emotional strength in our girls
Seminar-style classrooms featuring dialogue-based learning
Scientific field study & stewardship

Seminar Style Classrooms
Dialogue, the meaningful and productive exchange of ideas, is core to the
Santa Fe Girls’ School academic program. All classes are conducted with students engaged with one another other as well as with the teacher. All students
are encouraged and supported in their efforts to participate in non-competitive
discussions that honor difference of opinion and expand the notion of “what is
right” to include the question “why do you think that is right?”
Boots in the River at Project Preserve
We are fortunate to own nine and a half acres on the lower Santa Fe River.
This property serves as a field laboratory for our environmental science
program in which students lead an ongoing riparian habitat restoration project.
Girls become scientists themselves as they monitor the site and collect and
analyze data relating to biodiversity, the health of the river, and its
ecology. At the end of each academic year, the students present and discuss
their data and analyses at a public forum.
Connected Math: Patterns, Logic & Real World Applications
The powerful mathematics curriculum we use asks girls to develop and
apply concepts and skills to solve real world problems that are presented
within the context of science, social studies and history. The program supports and strengthens the development of logic and mathematical thinking.
Our eighth grade students complete high school level Algebra I as well as one
semester of Pythagorean Geometry.
Clear Voice: Writing for Academics & Expression
The school utilizes the renowned Jane Schaffer Writing Program®, a highly
structured approach to essay and academic writing. The method directs
students’ attention to the difference between fact and opinion (evidence and
interpretation) and teaches them to organize their ideas carefully and

to write clearly as they expand their ability to express themselves. Teachers
of all subjects employ this method, which gives the students ample opportunities for practice and feedback in a variety of contexts. Girls’ School
alumnae enter high school as experienced and skilled academic writers.
Girls in Focus: Hands on Math
Using Traditional Northern New Mexico Woodcarving
Our much-beloved traditional New Mexican woodcarving program provides an interdisciplinary experience for sixth grade students. Sixth graders study the development of the art and history of Islamic culture. Then
they practice precision in measurement and calculation as they develop
their own design patterns inspired by the rich Moorish traditions of our
region. With honed focus, patience and precision necessary to the task,
the girls apprentice to a master woodcarver who guides them as they ultimately produce a fine piece of traditional, carved furniture.
Personal Safety & Empowerment
I am no longer afraid and am confident
about myself. My instructors were supportive and helpful. I feel powerful and excited.
— Hailee, 8th grade IMPACT graduate
and alumni
All students participate in Impact Personal Safety classes. The program
begins with strategies and practice in developing safety awareness and
establishing personal boundaries, and moves through appropriate responses to threat, including de-escalation and self-defense. Lastly, in eighth
grade students take a full, twenty-hour self-defense course in which they
practice their awareness, de-escalation and self-defense skills. IMPACT
classes are one of many ways that the Girls’ School empowers girls to
develop into strong young women capable of facing challenges of all kinds
with resilience, confidence and agency.

History
We believe that history is a lens through which we discern patterns in order
to better understand the present and to predict the future.
The years I spent at the Santa Fe Girls’
School were the best educational experiences of my life. I was supported to learn
about myself and learned to love me for
who I am. The school has had a lasting
impression, and now I reach for my goals
and dreams, not those of others.
— Lucy, Class of 2001
At this school we are taught to take risks
in the classroom, and we know nobody
will tease us!
—Emma, Class of 2012
So many of my outstanding female students at Santa Fe High attended the Santa

not sheltered at your school. In fact, they
seem to be better at adjusting to the large,
diverse campus than others.

Our daughter developed a genuine
interest in topics that were only a
distraction before. This would not have
happened without your experience,
foresight, and dedication.

WHY FAMILIES CHOOSE THE SANTA FE
GIRLS’ SCHOOL FOR THEIR DAUGHTERS
The young ladies coming out of the Girls’
School have consistently been my most
vocal students, the most well read, and
some of the strongest writers coming into
the ninth grade….what I love is that they
are confident in what they know, what they
don’t know and the fact that they want
to learn more. They challenge me to be
a better teacher.
—Santa Fe High School Teacher
My experience with the unique, hands-on
environmental program inspired me to
pursue a degree in Watershed Science. Even
more importantly, the school provided an
incredible base for developing my confidence
both inside and out of the academic world.
—Melissa Miller, Class of 2008
Graduate of Colorado State University,
Watershed Science Major
Over the past seventeen years, nearly 200 girls have graduated from the
Santa Fe Girls’ School. Wherever they go, they take with them a finelyhoned capacity for learning and for being an integral part of a collaborative learning culture. They carry themselves with confidence, self-awareness, integrity and inner strength. They learn and practice leadership by
example. They are ready to navigate and enjoy the challenges and wonders of the twenty-first century.
WHAT OUR FAMILIES VALUE ABOUT THE SCHOOL
We Are Small
Our girls learn together that they can feel good about themselves as individuals and need not be afraid to strive to be their best or to be different.
They see that the small setting helps girls to identify their own best way
of learning and as such supports each girl to find her voice both as a student and an individual.
Families feel the smaller school setting helps their daughters to trust their
instincts and gain confidence in their learning.
Families want the social and developmental benefits that come when
a small group of motivated girls learn together.
Emotional Resilience and Supportive Social Development
The social camaraderie found in our small, all-girl school supports learning
in a culture of enthusiasm and curiosity.
Further, our school culture builds resilience by using conflict resolution as
an ongoing practice. Our students learn to recognize and address bullying,
peer group pressure and unwholesome competition.
Girls learn to embrace and sustain a diplomatic approach to life, which
comes from being a part of an inclusive group. They develop their own
capacity for kindness and empathy and experience the value of close female
friendships in community.

WE ONLY SERVE MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS IN A PARTICULARLY CRITICAL TIME OF THEIR LIFE
Girls in grades six - eight are our specialty and our one and only priority
The Santa Fe Girls’ School is making
a difference — I see it in both my
daughters as well as in the other girls
who attend the school — and that
trickles out to the community as a
whole. So happy my family is a part
of this school! —Parent
Strong Academics and Community Learning Environment
Girls develop the capacity to think for themselves.
Our girls share a profound sense of responsibility for learning.
Each student is an integral part of the school community with individual
responsibilities and recognition.
Santa Fe Girls’ School provides a balance between being
challenged and being safe
Girls develop an enthusiastic relationship with school and learning.
Girls leave the school with a strong foundation in being both assertive and
kind.
They are able to easily navigate the complex world of high school and college.
WHY WE BELIEVE IN A MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY
The Santa Fe Girls’ School is a place that dedicates all of its
resources to meeting the needs of adolescent girls. As girls
experience the growing pains associated with their transformation into young women, they take their places in a
small learning environment, crafting an identity and finding
their voices. At the Girls’ School, they are not only encouraged to speak their minds, they are expected to present their
thoughts, their calculations, their research and their art work
to their classmates and members of the larger school community. They share responsibility for the school campus and the
nine-acre environmental science lab on the Santa Fe River,
as well as the health and wellbeing of their classmates. This
is a powerful program designed to enhance a girl’s success in
achieving her highest expectations for herself.
