Also take into consideration student performance to this point and your observations of where particular students struggle. TEACH Implement the planned lesson, and gather evidence of student learning. Reading Catching Up This Year Looking Forward Review with students how to identify the main idea of a text. Remind students that the main idea is not always stated explicitly. RL.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. Have students select a theme from one of the poems and write their own poem around that theme. You may wish to administer the Theme and Symbol worksheet to help students understand how to identify the theme of a text. Speaking and Listening You may wish to administer the Oral Presentation worksheet to help students understand what makes an effective presentation. SL.6 Adapt speech to a variety of tasks demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. You may wish to challenge students to perform their Reader’s Theater or show their video presentation to a community-based organization. Language You may wish to administer the Latin root -lum- worksheet to help students understand that knowing the meaning of roots helps them unlock the meaning of many words. L.4b Identify and correctly use patterns of word changes that indicate different meanings or parts of speech. Have students identify other Latin roots that mean “light” and find several words that have this root. You may wish to administer the Figurative Language worksheet to help students understand the effectiveness of figures of speech. L.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
