Growth of cProjects usage and ‘dissatisfaction’
ASUG 2013
Drivers:
• System speed is #1 complaint for PDM users
• Affects 15,000 users
•70% efficiency gain in task management
•Improved user experience
•Real-time data for program management
• System contention in existing ECC (workload
Includes manufacturing, PPM, Warranty, MES)
Growth Objectives:
• Must have for PDM Enterprise Convergence
• Doubling in size in the last year – negative effect on performance
• Rate of increase expected to remain at 25% through 2017

Determine if ERP on HANA is real and “real close”
Can ERP on HANA “fix” cProjects performance
Can ERP on HANA improve MRP, FICO Month-end Close or High Volume Back Flush Performance
Get Deere’s complex workload into SAP so that when ERP on HANA is real, it could be already tuned.

Final Joint SAP & Deere Steering Committee Decision
Summary
•There are no operational showstoppers for the PDM on HANA Go-Live
•SAP
has provided solid, timely support for our operational testing
•Availability
• Users should expect more planned outage
• Risk for unplanned outages is difficult to predict
• In the event of a failure, failover to the standby database could take more than an hour
• High Availability configuration will need to change to provide an automated solution in the
future (2014 budget item)
•Scalability
• Have now scaled to 2 TB for the prod and test environment
• Will want to continue to pay close attention to data governance to stay within the 2 TB
footprint

Change Control & ABAP on HANA
We focused on carve-out not optimizing
code for HANA.
HANA Change Management is ‘basic’
Upload/download
What we have seen:
Training Required
Lack of version management
Traditional ABAP’ers will struggle.
Lack of error reporting if activation fails – you
Tools:
must look deeper for failed activations
Eclipse
HANA Studio
Bottom line: If you use ChaRM or CTS+, HANA
Performance tracing is different
will be a step backwards until the other solutions
Application DBA role is required.

Skills and Philosophies including Platform
TRAINING and MINDSET
-
You can’t start getting your teams to think
about HANA and how it’s different too soon
-
In addition to DBA’s, Basis and AD need to
understand how the HANA DB works and
how it impacts them
-
HANA relevant objects
-
Row store vs. column store
-
I need to care more about space
Basis and DBA’s need to learn how to use
the HANA Studio ASAP and more importantly
need to understand how to interpret the data

HARDWARE
-
Since you are buying an appliance, make
sure you fully understand your options to
upgrade, etc.
-
Don’t buy too small
-
Given size constraints and cost, you will
be tempted to buy small.
-
Nice to be able to use your same application
servers. Nothing different required here as a
result of using HANA
-
Pay attention to Data Center Readiness
20
Lessons Learned
DATA SLIMMING
-
Even if you archive today, you will likely need
to find more areas to reduce space
-
Things that are not wasted space today could
be in HANA
