MUSIC CURRICULUM
First year young beginners
Objectives:
This teaching course is based on the "hands on" experience of students studying music as an
independent language. Music making is an essential part of this curriculum and music theory,
music appreciation and the understanding of music as a valuable art come in first place. All other
skills should be built from playing the Treble and Bass Clefs on the piano/keyboard, advanced
development of both hands (10 fingers) coordination, piano technique, sight-reading, singing
Solfeggio and writing music dictations.
What students will learn:
1. Theory. The music note alphabet, all of the music notes of The First and Small octaves, about
eighth, quarter, and half notes, Tune, Major Tune, Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant, staccato,
legato, fermata, noisy and musical sounds, pitch, rhythm and time signature, tonality, note
duration, and bits.
2. Solfeggio - learning to sing, memorize and write down simple melodies in Do Major (2/4 and
4/4)
3. Harmony - learning to play Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant by ear for simple music pieces
in Do Major.
4. Sight-reading - playing Nursery and Classical pieces of music using both hands on the piano
(keyboard).
5. Performance - learning and performing piano pieces of modern and contemporary composers
at recitals.

Week 1
A. Theory: music note alphabet (10 minutes)
1. Learning the symbols: Do - Door, Re - Rain, Mi - Mirror, Fa - Farm, Sol - Salt, La - Ladder
and Ti - Cup of Tea, using Flash Cards Level 1(Sheets 1 and 2)
2. Singing the scale from Do to Do, pressing the piano/keyboard keys with piano key stickers
3. Learning how to put flash cards in the order of:
Do Re Mi Fa Sol La and Ti. Flip one of the card over and learn how to count to the missing card.
B. Finger Exercises (5 minutes)
1. The Guess Key Name computer game - play for 10 minutes, write down the results

correct fingering on the notes (Mi - the 3rd, Re - the 4th and Do - the 1st )

with the pinky and the blue Sol of the small octave is played with the thumb)
