CANADA’S ANTI-SPAM LAW (CASL)

MESSAGES (CEM) —
REQUIREMENTS
The following are the CASL requirements that apply to any Commercial Electronic Message1:
1. From names: These need to accurately identify the sender of the message
2. Subject lines: These need to accurately reflect the purpose of the email
3. Identification requirements: The sender of the message needs to be clearly identified in the message. In case the message
is being sent on someone’s behalf (advertiser), both the parties need to be clearly identified in the message
4. Contact information: Mailing address and either of the following contact information pertaining to sender needs to be
mentioned in the message:
a) telephone number
b) email address
c) web address
5. Unsubscribe mechanism: The email message should have an unsubscribe mechanism which needs to be valid for at least
60 days after the message has been sent
6. Statement: In case the message is being sent on behalf of someone else (advertiser), a statement indicating which person
is sending the message and which person on whose behalf the message is being sent needs to be mentioned in the
message
