School Arrangements This Week
Dear Parents,
Due to the storm we have already experienced and those still to come things
have been in disarray this week. As you are away there was no School yesterday
and School today will finish at 1pm.
We have also made a decision that there will be no School on Wednesday 13th.
It is not expected that we will have power and therefore no water or computers.
Although we have an emergency line in operation our telephone system is not
working and we cannot receive calls. If you need to contact the School the best
avenue at present is by email. Furthermore we consider it is too dangerous for
our staff and students to travel.
If this situation changes we will attempt to advise you via the phone tree
network.
I hope you can all weather the storm tucked up safely in warm and comfortable
homes.
Farewell
This week we would like to say a sad farewell to Rani Calvert from Class 4. Rani
has been at the School for three years. She is leaving us to attend a School a bit
closer to home. All the best to Rani, Brad and Louise from all of us here at YSS.
Transit of Venus
Disappointingly, we were not able to witness the Transit of Venus last week due
to heavy cloud conditions. We would however, like to thank Andrew Cohen for
bringing his solar scope out to the School so we could try.
PPS Hours
Please return any PPS hours you may have done to the office before the end of
term. Spare forms also available in the Office.

WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION
Thursday, June 21st
Pupil Free Day
Thursday June the 21st will be Pupil Free for Classes One to Six for the day but
all children in these Classes One to Six are expected to participate in the Winter
Solstice Celebration and be in their classrooms by 4.45 p.m. Please be punctual.
During the course of the day, the staff and volunteers will prepare for the
Festival.
In their classrooms the children will commence with an intimate gathering with
their Class teacher and a nourishing soup.
Ceremonial Elder: Adrian May
Adrian will direct and lead the Festival Ceremony.
Lantern Walk
The Lantern Walk should commence in darkness
at 5.30 p.m. Adrian will lead the procession
around the school along a pre-ordained route.
Parents are asked to join the procession. It will
lead to the spiral where all gather in their class
groups.
Songs
At the end of the procession the children will
gather at the spiral to sing songs.
Spiral Walk - Josh, Wardandi story and
Didgeridoo
Josh from the Wardan Centre will join us again
and tell a story relating to our local area from
the rich indigenous tradition of the Wardandi
people.
The children will commence the spiral walk
accompanied by Joshua’s didgeridoo.
With their lanterns, the children walk the spiral,
class by class with their teachers. They light
their candle from the large candle at the centre
of the spiral and place on the spiral and return
to their places.
Fire Twirling
Franka’s graduating class (all girls) will be
demonstrating fire twirling – fire twirling
instructor permitting! We are confident we can
find someone to help out.
Return to Classrooms
All children return to their classrooms to take off
their cloaks.
Parents to take home their children on leaving
the Classroom.
WINTER SOLSTICE ACTIVITIES
For candle making activities – If you have any
large 2 litre tins - empty (e.g. Golden Circle
juice), we would appreciate acquiring them for
candle making. These can be left in the office.

SONGS
When the Gnomes Go Underground …
When the gnomes go underground,
With the Flowers they have found,
With a seed – bag on their back,
They march in boots of black.
Chorus
Verse 2
Then through the night a soft bird’s cry,
Whispering leaves a breeze’s sigh,
Colours run fast in chilly dawn,
With the promise of life the sun is born.
Chorus
Come Winter …
Come Winter, there’s a cold wind blowing
O’er the frost in the early morn,
When the cold winds blow,
‘Neath a roof of snow,
They dance and work and sing,
And the seeds they store
In caves dug before
Sleep and wait for Spring.
When the gnomes go underground,
With the Flowers they have found,
With a seed – bag on their back,
They march in boots of black.
Crystal Cluster Chorus
Over the hills and far away,
We dig the ground from dusk to day,
Searching for crystals shiny and bright,
Breaking up the hardest rocks through the night,
Breaking up the hardest rocks through the night.
Sparkling, shiny, shimmering sight,
Faceted flickering crystals bright,
Deep-down a tunnelling beneath the ground,
Where our special gifts of light are found,
Where our special gifts of light are found.
We’re the crystal colour chorus, Come and sing
our song,
Sing a seven colour crystal seven chorus song,
Wide awake a wandering, a working around,
Clink, clunk, chip, chop
Rock breaking sounds,
Clink, clunk, chip, chop
Rock breaking sounds.
All is Still
Chorus
All is still, we gather round a tiny light,
On the shortest day and longest night,
And as we watch our spiral grow,
Our hearts and eyes, begin to glow.
Verse 1
As daylight fades and evening falls,
The darkness rests upon the earth,
The bush folk sleep, a barn owl calls,
All awaiting the new Sun’s birth.
When Sun turns pale
And the wind turns to gale,
The trees bend under the wind,
If they don’t give way,
They will break, so they say
But their seeds will grow again,
Mother Earth is keeping their secrets inside,
‘Til next Spring’s morning day.
Mother Earth is keeping their secrets inside,
‘Til next Spring’s morning day.

Seed Song
Down to Mother Earth you fly,
Bringing warmth from Father Sky,
Watchful gnomes meet you below,
Showing you the way to grow,
When your winter sleep is done,
You’ll be wakened by the Sun.
