Answer—“See You In Omaha”. Question—What is Florida State head coach Mike Martin’s four
favorite words in the English language… preferably strung together in mid-June.
If you ask Martin what he loves about the game of baseball, one of the things he will tell you is every day
you come to the ballpark there is a chance to see history made…that is exactly what happened on
Sunday…Florida State came up one hit shy of setting an NCAA record when the Seminoles recorded
10 consecutive hits in a 15 run, 13 hit seventh inning…the 13 hits tied an NCAA record for the most hits
in DI baseball history in a seventh inning, and FSU tied a school record with 21 at bats in the frame…the
record inning broke open what was a close game with Siena (0-9), as FSU went on to sweep the series
with a, 22-3, victory…the win came on the heels of the Seminoles (now 17-0) entering record territory the
day before with their 16th straight win to start a season, besting the record set by Woody Woodward's
1975 squad.
The last time FSU scored more than 22 runs was May 21, 2004, at Wake Forest when they scored 27
times…you have to go back to February 21, 1997, to find the last time Florida State had that many runs
in a regular season home game. That year the Seminoles beat Marshall, 22-1.
"It is a great accomplishment," said Martin. "Records are made to be broken. This one stood for
(almost) 33 years. It is a great accomplishment for our club. Now, we just got to continue to get it done."
Therein lies the rub.
Martin, a 2007 inductee into the ABCA Hall of Fame, is one of the all-time winningest coaches in college
baseball history--one of the sports’ great ambassadors and genuinely nice guys. But to many in
Tallahassee, there is the matter of that 200 lb. gorilla in the corner.
Just last month (2/19), Steve Ellis of the Tallahassee Democrat penned the following column…
National title missing from Coach Martin's successes
Understandably, it's probably difficult to impress Buster Posey. Although no Florida State baseball player
arguably puts more time into the game than does the gifted sophomore, he just seems to make every
challenge appear so easy.
But on Sunday afternoon, the shortstop-turned-catcher seemed truly struck that he is playing for a coach
who is now tied for fifth in all-time victories. And that's for all divisions of college baseball coaches - active
or retired.
“That's amazing,” Posey said. “You got to be very good at what you do and you got to be around for a
long time to do that. That's a heck of (an) accomplishment.”

With his 1,444 wins on Sunday, Martin trails four active coaches in Texas Tech's Larry Hays; Gene
Stephenson of Wichita State; Augie Garrido, now of Texas and, before that, Cal State Fullerton; and
Gordie Gillespie of NAIA St. Francis, who leads the pack with 1,709 wins.
To reach this point, Martin has already passed a number of college baseball legends - including Cliff
Gustafson and Rod Dedeaux - in victories. And he did so in fewer years than either before they retired in
1986 and 1996, respectively.
Yet among veteran baseball writers in particular, and probably among college baseball fans who gather at
the sport's mecca in Omaha each June, Martin's name isn't often mentioned in the same breath with a
Garrido or Gustafson or even former Miami coach Ron Fraser.
Former Virginia Tech coach Chuck Hartman admitted last week that he wonders how it took their
coaching peers until this year to put Martin into the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
But it says a lot to expectations - especially of a program such as Florida State, with its now-excellent
facilities and location in a state rich with baseball talent. With all that FSU has going for it, and all that
Martin has accomplished, the tradition room in the belly of Dick Howser Stadium is without its
centerpiece. No national championship trophy.
Garrido and former LSU coach Skip Bertman have won five College World Series each. Gustafson and
Fraser also have their national titles.
Until Martin can claim a title for himself, he will not be fully appreciated by many for his accomplishments.
Twelve CWS appearances and two runner-ups will not be enough, just as coming close wasn't enough for
football coach Bobby Bowden. Two national titles added luster to all his victories.
Win it all, baby. Fair or not, it's the only ticket to punch for earning the ultimate respect.
Ouch! Here’s hoping 2007 is the year Coach Martin adds two more words to his favorites…
National Champions.

see several college and minor league venues across the country, but I can easily say that the job Reid
Ryan and his staff have done developing Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi far surpasses any other
facility I've seen. I know our players appreciate the opportunity to play in such a world class facility and I
hope the residents of Corpus Christi realize how fortunate they are to be able to enjoy games in the
crown jewel of the Texas League.” South Padre Island has long been a popular Spring Break
destination and the event occurs during this window for many colleges and universities.

Lipscomb takes two of three from mighty LSU squad
Louisiana State has been the standard for collegiate baseball excellence for the last two decades. LSU
has won five national championships, most recently in 2000. The Tigers have qualified for the NCAA
tournament for 18 straight years and the program routinely ranks among the nation’s leaders in home
attendance.
Lipscomb University baseball, on the other hand, doesn’t have a trophy case quite as big. Having never
turned in a winning record since making the leap to NCAA Division I four years ago, Lipscomb handed the
keys of the program to Jeff Forehand.
Arriving from across town at Trevecca, where he had the Trojans contending nationally at the NAIA level,
Forehand looked to lay a foundation for a successful program and generally change the gloomy mood
that hung over Lipscomb baseball.
Forehand scheduled a three-game road trip LSU so his team could “have an eye-opening experience”
about what top-flight college baseball was all about. Instead of getting its brains beaten in by the Bayou
Bengals, Lipscomb took two of three from LSU.
The Bisons are the first team to win a non-conference series at LSU since 2003. Under its first-year
coach, Lipscomb is off to an 11-5 start, well on its way to a winning record.
“For us, it was all about the opportunity,” Forehand said. “You get the opportunity to play somewhere like
that once in a while. We were just hoping we could play well and sneak one away from them. Fortunately,
the ball bounced our way a few times and we were able to get two games.”
Forehand said the players are beginning to buy into his philosophy and mount confidence.
“I feel like the players do understand it and are able to address what we need to work on enthusiastically,”
Forehand said.
The goal for Lipscomb is to make itself competitive in the Atlantic Sun. In most sports, the A-Sun qualifies
just one team to the NCAA tournament. But in baseball, the league is capable of sending more like last
year, when Jacksonville received an at-large bid.
Long story short, if Lipscomb wants to contend in a competitive league like the A-Sun, beating teams like
LSU helps get the ball rolling in the right direction.
“We want to get ready for the Atlantic Sun. That’s why we scheduled teams like Evansville, Vanderbilt,
Auburn and [Middle Tennessee],” Forehand said. “We want to build up confidence for the conference
season.”
UC Irvine won its fourth consecutive series over Washington last weekend before falling to San Diego
2-0 Tuesday…the Anteaters scored a season-most 17 runs in the middle game of the series with the
Huskies…Matt Morris continues to lead UCI with a .459 batting average and 18 RBI and is second of
the squad with four homers in 17 contests…UCI’s power hitting improvement has produced 16 team
circuit clouts this season – just four away from knotting the entire 2006 season tally of 20 home runs…
New Orleans has a Sun Belt Conference active longest winning skein of eight games, as Nicholls
State pitchers could not silence the UNO bats and the Privateers defeated Nicholls, 9-3, last night at
Ray E. Didier Field…the Privateers (10-5) collected nine runs on 12 hits, while the Colonels (3-12)

Reigning National Champion Oregon State finally tees it up in front of the home fans today as Kip
Carlson reports…
No. 8 Beavers get their first look at home, sweet home in 2007 as Evansville visits for three games
There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home…
And Oregon State finally gets to test the veracity of that statement this week. The eighth-ranked
Beavers (14-3 overall) will get their first look of 2007 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field when they host
Evansville (9-4 overall) on Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. in a nonconference baseball series matching a pair of defending conference champions.
OSU - which won not only the last two Pacific-10 championships but also the 2006 College World
Series title - will be playing its first home games as defending national champs. The Beavers will be going
against an Evansville program that won both the Missouri Valley regular season and tournament titles last
season.
“It should be a great weekend,” OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “First, we’re playing a very good
ballclub in Evansville and so we need to step up our performance. If we do that, there could be some
terrific baseball played. Second, it’s just going to be great to be at home. It seems like we’ve been on the
road forever and our guys are really looking forward to being able to stay in town for a weekend, play in
their own park and play in front of their own fans for a change.”
Those fans will notice a few changes at the Beaver ballpark.
First, there’s a new scoreboard in right-centerfield, complete with video capability. Second, the infield
is now covered with a FieldTurf artificial surface.
“Those are going to be some great additions for our fans and for our ballclub,” Casey said. “The
scoreboard is going to add a lot to the experience of being in our ballpark. And the new infield can really
cut down on the amount of time that we might be affected by weather this time of year. Both of those are
big steps forward for our ballpark.”
Oregon State - which is playing its centennial season of varsity baseball - is 78-19 in home-openers
dating back to 1907. Oregon State has won 17 of its last 19 home-openers and 32 of its last 35.
The Beavers come home after winning three of four games in the Domino’s Pizza Aggie Baseball
Classic at Texas A&M. OSU lost to the Aggies 5-2, then beat New Mexico 6-2, beat St. Louis 2-0 and
beat Texas A&M 6-5.
OSU is ranked eighth nationally in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, ninth by Baseball America
magazine, seventh by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, and eighth in the National Collegiate Baseball
Writers Association poll this week.

average), junior lefthander Joe Paterson (2-1, 3.14) and junior righthander Daniel Turpen (4-0, 2.45) has
helped Oregon State hold its opponents to three or fewer runs in nine of 17 games.
Evansville is ranked 25th by Baseball America. The Purple Aces have won five straight games after
winning at Murray State 19-1 on Tuesday. Last weekend, UE swept Miami (Ohio) 2-0, 3-2 and 3-2 at
home and they had beaten Butler 4-1 at home last week. The Purple Aces have been led at the plate by
junior outfielder Jim Viscomi (.382, 0, 7), senior infielder Robbie Minor (.367, 0, 4) and senior infielder
