Camp Comes to Hope!!
Some of my most vivid childhood memories are of spending time at Church Camp! What a
gift it was to get away from the city, away from school and routine and, yes, even my
family, to spend time outdoors! Running, hiking, playing games, doing arts and crafts were
highlights. So was going to the "canteen", the name given to the snack shop. There I used
my "spending money" to buy snacks as well as annual T-shirts to remember my adventures
with my friends -- new and old.
Time at camp was tremendously formative in my faith. I came to love "chapel time" and the
Bible stories and camp songs we shared around late night campfires. Camp provided some
of my first opportunities to test the waters at being a worship and Bible study leader. It was
one of the first places where I realized that EVERY member of the congregation -- even
young me -- had important thoughts and insights into God's Word.
What a tremendous gift we have in the ELCA with our Lutheran camp
ministries. We're especially blessed to have two different locations of Lutheran
Retreats Camps and Conferences (LRCC) within easy driving distances of
Hope -- Luther Glen and Farm in Oak Glen and El Camino Pines in the Los
Padres National Forest. Both are amazing settings that provide inspiring views
of God's creation. More than that, though, they are the places where new
friendships and relationships with God and Creation begin and deepen.
We don't have to only go TO camp. LRCC has made it possible for camp to
come to us!!! On Thursday and Friday of this past week our LRCC farm came
to Hope Children's Center. Look at the pictures and see the joy and surprise on
the kid’s AND the adult's faces. One of our preschoolers saw one of the
chickens actually lay an egg!
LRCC also partners with Hope to offer Confirmation Camp at LRCC, a week
of summer day camp on our Hope campus - - this year Monday - Friday,
July 30 - August 4. Registration begins Sunday, May 7. See page 7 for
details.
Please join us Sunday, May 7, for Camp Sunday at Hope. Camp Director
Nate and Farm Director Beth will be joined by Shirley and our youth in
leading both worship services. Between services, all are invited to meet
some of the farm animals from Luther Glen. Maybe YOU will see a chicken
lay an egg! If not, you'll still be able to buy a dozen
farm fresh eggs with an added bonus: for every dozen
eggs purchased, another dozen will be given to
Central City Lutheran Mission in San Bernardino! On
Sunday, you will also have an opportunity to make a
special offering through Hope to support LRCC and
the faithful ministry they lead year-round for youth
AND adults.
In God’s Gracious Grip,
Pastor Sandy

From Hope’s Council
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On April 23, after each service, we had a brainstorming session that produced great ideas on how to address
two very important missions of our church life: Outreach and Hospitality/Welcome:

Offer welcome gift
Prayer garden/labyrinth
Hold a ministry fair

Bible Study gatherings
Involve more with music
Offer jams at our facility

Create a “Who are we” brochure
Include a welcome packet for all visitors
Don’t use “churchy” words that all may not understand
Bulletin boards show diversity, openness
Pens with church name/pass out
Children/youth are regularly part of the service
Evaluate the ministries and give feedback opportunities
Carpooling or pick up services for seniors
Balance tradition with new activities
Reach out to High Schools to engage kids possibly in our band
Activate Dream and Discover ideas
What would make you feel more welcomed? What has made you feel welcomed somewhere else? We are
all excited to get to our new building and activate these ideas but the planning and putting steps into place
start now. We need leaders for these groups – shared leadership would be welcome as well. Please pray
about it; can you take on this wonderful challenge? Please let us know of your interest and desire to make a
difference for HLC. Thank you, Marta Bills, for typing up all the crazy session notes.
Thank you to everyone for helping Hope arrive at the milestone of reaching the half-way point of $150,000 for
BHFF Phase II well ahead of our November 2018 two-year goal of $300,000! We received half our goal in less
than a quarter of the time we set!
Thank you also to Roger and Rosalie Hayward’s seeking potential BHFF donations from foundations, thank you
to WELCA for continuing to gather funds for the landscaping project, and to all of our Thrivent Choice Dollars
donors, we appreciate your help. Keep it up – construction seems to swallow funds faster than what we can
gather!
Financial update, year to date 2017:
We will have a detailed report on the construction
progress and our construction budget at the
special congregational meeting 9:15 on May 14.
Notifications about voting on an anticipated
increase to our construction loan have been sent.

$300,000 BHFF goal
The building site is an exciting place to visit these days! If you visit
or show up for the volunteer cleaning crew Tuesday afternoon
or Saturday morning (yes, more help is always needed!), you'll
be impressed by the high ceilings, beautiful walls in the worship
center, which will include our stained glass windows, and wellplanned storage areas. The drywall put up by our amazing
Hope volunteers make it clear how classrooms and hallways are
defined.
What's been happening? The outside walls have had an initial
plaster layer applied. Color will come later. The water
connection to the street was set up on Saturday.
The Steering Committee has been working on figuring out $150,464 rec’d by 5/1
where we'll use projection, how the stone wall and cross
will come together in the church, where the organ speakers will be. Members of the team are
studying how to create savings as we adjust plans for the audio/visual sound system equipment
BHFF
and wiring needed, yet still wire for possible changes and updates in the future.
PHASE II
On Sunday, May 14, the Council and Steering Committee will hold a meeting between services to
ask for congregational approval to increase our bank loan due to increases in costs since initial
estimates were made. All efforts are being made to keep expenses low, yet provide a quality
building equipped for ministry. We hope to see you there!

Building Missional Capacity
We completed our Lent Community Connections gatherings
on April 5 with Rocky Hill from Hill Counseling on substance
abuse. Attendees learned about the services they provide
and how this issue affects our community. Thanks to all who
supported the series this year in their attendance and
engagement with the presentations. We are confident that
connecting with and learning about these programs will bear
fruit in the months to come.
Lloyd Bittner led a group of 9 enthusiastic Hope
hikers on a 6 mile portion of the famed Pacific
Crest Trail near Warner Springs on April 15. We are
lucky to have an experienced hiking leader like
Lloyd, particularly since Michele Wesel suffered a
leg injury on this hike. Please pray for Michele’s
speedy recovery! A stop for ice cream on the way
home was a sweet way to wrap up the day.
On Saturday, May 6 from 9 -11:30am we are
hosting a free workshop: Caregiving for Loved
Ones and Self-Care. Many members of Hope and our
community are dealing with issues related to caring for
family members, parents or spouses. Making decisions
about what is best for your loved one and you can be
difficult. Please invite friends who might benefit to join us.
Our speaker is Carmen Estrada from Inland Caregiver
Resource Center. Free breakfast is included.
Home-made Cookies NEEDED !
Pacifica Synod Assembly is May 11-13 in San Diego. Attending from Hope are Pastor
Sandy, Marta Bills, Cherie Gero, Steve & Caronne VanNyhuis.
All congregations are asked to bring homemade cookies or healthy snacks (trail mix,
packaged nuts, etc)
To help, bring your goodies to Redhawk no later than 3 pm Wednesday, May 10.

Adult Education Ministry – the Gospel of John
There has been an over-whelming response to our study of the Gospels. And to complete
the series, a 10-week study of the Gospel of John is just beginning. This Gospel is so rich
with insights, AND we have a good foundation from the first three books: Matthew, Mark,
and Luke. Conversation in groups will be rich with information, and packed with depth.
If you haven’t jumped on the Gospel Study Train, now is a good time to come aboard!
You will be amazed at how Jesus shows His Love for the Father, his disciples, and, yes,
even us, as we follow His life through the Gospel accounts. Many of the questions for this
study ask you to imagine what the disciples, as first hand witnesses, were feeling,
understanding, and learning. Look for more information as the study of John gets under way.

a ministry of Hope Lutheran Church
As we approach the final weeks of preschool, we can't help but wonder where the time
went! The staff at Hope children's Center realizes what a privilege it is to have parents
entrust their children to us for a whole year. They are the sweetest of God's gifts and
their footprints leave a permanent imprint on our hearts!
We are so proud of the growth all our children have made this year, but especially our
kindergarten-bound students! We know they are more than ready to take that giant
leap! Nevertheless, we are so sad to let them go. So, we send our kindergartners off
with this promise from God: “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you
in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11) AMEN!
Register for 2017/18 school year NOW!
If someone is looking for a fun filled, Christ centered learning environment for their preschooler, come check us

For free tickets and more information, go to link:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/homelessness-helping-without-hurting-tickets-33163413663
The event will seek to address the following questions:
• How can we create sustainable and effective ways to serve those experiencing homelessness?
• What are some of the common pitfalls of providing assistance to those experiencing homelessness and
how can they be avoided?
• How can we shift our efforts from creating unintended dependency to fostering empowerment?
Women of Hope
Jesus said to the father of the
afflicted boy, “. . . all things can be
done for the one who believes.”
Immediately the father of the child cried out,
“I believe; help my unbelief!”
Mark 9:23-24
Through grace, we have faith.
Quoting David Householder,
Faith makes a huge difference in the outcome of life.
Having faith and speaking faith can alter almost
everything. People in the Bible prayed without being
tentative and without asterisks.
As our new building nears completion, we know we
are blessed by the Holy Spirit. We are blessed with a
faithful congregation. Keep praying!

Please sign up on the easel in the back of our
Worship Space either of the two Sundays prior to
this event so we know how many are coming.
Please don’t forget to sign up, and remember we
must pay the caterer for every name on the list.
We urge all 50+ people to attend. The program,
the food and the fellowship will make for a most
enjoyable outing and a delicious lunch. Cost is $9.
Hope to see you there.
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the
body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.”
1 Corinthians 12:12
It takes ALL of us to be Christ’s Body
here at Hope. While it is impossible to
thank everyone individually for all their
acts of discipleship, each month we try
to highlight a few folks who have been
“especially supportive!”
To suggest someone to be included
in our “Backbone of Hope” list, please
contact the office who will forward
those names to council.
