We have lots of activities and events happening this year, I am looking forward to be able to share these with you. A big welcome to any new clients that have started with us over the past few months and we hope you continue your journey with us for a long time to come. You should have all by now received a factsheet from your Community Care Worker with information relating to Home Care Reforms: Changes to Home Care Increasing Choice in Home Care - The Australian Government subsidises the cost of a range of different aged care services to support older Australians, no matter what their needs might be. One of these services is a home care package. From 27 February 2017, home care packages will change to give you more choice about your care and who delivers it. Consumer Directed Care - What is Consumer Directed Care (CDC)? Consumer Directed Care (CDC) gives you flexibility and choice in the delivery of your home care package. It gives you more control over the types of care and services you receive, how they are delivered, by whom and when. If you haven’t received these fact sheets or would like to know more ask one of our staff members, contact our office on 5522 9197 or; For more information about home care visit http://www.myagedcare.gov.au or call the My Aged Care contact centre on 1800 200 422 Also the Department of Health has updated the Charter of Care Recipients’ Rights and Responsibilities – Home Care, for further information or to receive a copy of the new Charter of Care Recipients Rights please ask one of our staff or call us on 5522 9197. More information can also be found at - https://agedcare.govcms.gov.au Just for your information the Gold Coast City Council has a Home Library Service. The Home Library Service is available to those who are unable to personally visit a library due to ill health or disability and do not have the support of family or friends to collect reading materials on their behalf. Library volunteers assist by selecting, delivering and returning library items to and from homes of home bound customers. Eligibility criteria apply and spaces in the program are limited. For enquiries call 1300 465 326. Over the next 2 months our Administrator Mandy will be getting Client Surveys out to you. These are not compulsory to complete but any feedback helps us to continually improve. Feedback on surveys is completely confidential and we would greatly appreciate your contribution. Looking forward to the year ahead… Jean Edwards KALWUN Community Care | 118 Bonogin Road Mudgeeraba | P 5522 9197 | F 5596 6058 | www.kalwun.com.au Page | 2 Message from Joe Edwards – Respite Centre Supervisor Hi all, well I hope everyone had a great Christmas, it’s another year and there are heaps of great activities on offer. We are frantically working to ensure we stay well informed about the sector changes, and communicating this to all our consumers. During the month of February we held five consecutive daily information sessions to all clients in our Respite Centre (some of whom might have had to sit through the same boring speech more than once – sorry ). We collated the common questions that were asked and sought to communicate these with all of our clients. It turns out that the Fact Sheets on the Department’s website were much more comprehensive and these should now have been given out to all clients (please ask us for a copy if you have not received one). We want to continue to encourage everyone to ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel assured about your situation. I would like to thank all of our clients for your warm welcome as well. The first few months were a bit of a whirlwind start with Kalwun, and in my travels I have met so many people with great stories to share. Sitting down for a cuppa in the Respite Centre every now and then, or visiting clients in home is always time well spent as I enjoy getting to know our clients and hearing about how we can improve our services (or even how we are doing an OK job too ) As always, stay tuned for more to come – we have some exciting new programs planned for 2017, ranging from swimming through to connecting with local schools to deliver some innovative services. The Queensland Police Media released a statement saying that an elaborate telephone scam in which police and bank officials are impersonated has resulted in several elderly Gold Coast residents loosing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The victims – including one 89-year-old Tallebudgera woman who lost over $200,000 – are cold called by a man claiming to be either a police officer, a manager from a business, or a fraud investigator from one of Australia’s banks. There are also emails going around impersonating the Queensland Police stating that you need to pay a fine or other infringement. If you or anyone that you know has been a victim of this scam please report the incident through ACORN, the Australian Cyber-crime Online Reporting Network https://www.acorn.gov.au/ Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day. Kalwun Aqua Aerobics Come join us for some fun in the pool with an aqua aerobics class. Our first class is on Tuesday 14th March at the Mudgeeraba Pool. The cost is $3. If you are interested just phone the centre on 5522 9197 and speak with Joe or Eualanda. Pre-heat oven to 2100 C. Prepare a 12 hole muffin tin with patty cases. Sift flour and sugar into a bowl. 2. Add roasted wattleseed and stir. Make a well in the centre of the mix. 3. Combine margarine and marmalade in a small pan. Stir over a low heat until the marmalade becomes runny and the margarine has melted. 4. The following list offers a range of sensible strategies to help make your outings safe and enjoyable. Choose those tips which best suit your lifestyle and comfort. When walking Before leaving home, take time to lock up carefully. Take only what you need with you. Avoid short-cuts that would take you through isolated areas, especially at night. If you think you are being followed or in danger of being confronted: cross the street try and get the attention of people nearby - shout as loudly as you can seek help at the nearest house, shop or busy public place If possible, take note of what the offender looks like and, if a vehicle is involved, take note of its rego number. Call the police with this information if you have access to a telephone. If you are confronted by someone who is trying to take your bag, give it to them. This may go against all your instincts, but remember that no amount of money or inconvenience is worth personal injury. Carry a mobile phone or change for a telephone call. When shopping Carry your handbag in front of your body and keep your wallet separate. Keep your bag with you at all times and avoid carrying or leaving your bag on a shopping trolley, at your feet in public places or on the hook of the door in a public toilet. When using an ATM, don't let people see where you put money in your bag or wallet and make sure the ATM is in public view where you can be seen by other people. When driving or on public transport If you are going somewhere unfamiliar, plan your route carefully in advance. Avoid travelling on isolated roads, especially at night. Ensure your car is in good condition and has plenty of oil, petrol and water. Never pick up a hitchhiker. Park your car in well-lit areas and don't leave valuables inside. Have your keys ready before you walk to your car. To reduce waiting times, know the bus or train timetable When waiting at the bus stop or train station, stand with other people if possible. If the bus or train is empty, or nearly empty, sit near the bus driver or the train driver. Being safe and securing your home Use a peephole, door chain or a window to see who's at the door before opening it. Open your door only to people you know and trust. If someone is at the door and you are alone and feeling insecure, pretend there is someone else in the house (preferably a male). Don't give your name, phone number, address to unknown telephone callers. Trim bushes and trees that obscure windows. Consider installing sensor lights that turn on when you come home at night. Have valuables engraved - contact your local police station for details. Consider keeping a dog. Plan at least two escape routes so you can leave your home quickly in an emergency. Store emergency numbers in the speed dials of your phone. Further information This information has been sourced from the handbook Confident, Safe & Secure Living in Queensland. For all Kalwun clients receiving home maintenance services under either of the following programs: - Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) - Queensland Community Care (QCC) We have reduced our fees to $12.50 per service, effective from 1/3/17 For those clients in receipt of a Home Care Package of funding, your fees will still be charged to your package as usual and remain as agreed in your Service Agreement. Just a reminder….that we have EFTPOS Facilities available for payment of fees both in the home and in the Day Respite Centre. We believe that this is a step in the right direction with regards to moving forward with technology and also providing you with an easy, safe and convenient way to pay your fees. It is a recommendation from Government Funding Bodies that we eventually become a cashless organisation and all fees will be paid electronically. We appreciate your cooperation with regards to the above matter.
