WOW & THEN
Simply elegant lines, natural materials and
a classic palette define this renovation.
Let there be light
These Punch wall lights were
selected to create ambient
light. They also pay respect to
the home’s original architecture
in their nostalgic detailing.
Black beauty
Black touches create contrast,
frame elements and provide
visual cues for many of the
touch points in the room.
Table talk

steel frame, giving it the
appearance of a table. The

THE PROJECT
Designed by Arent&Pyke, this kitchen is the centrepiece and
social hub in a renovated California bungalow in Sydney’s
northern suburbs. To enhance the room’s connection to the
living/dining area, interior designers Sarah-Jane Pyke and Juliette
Arent imbued it with ‘un-kitchen-like’ characteristics: an island
bench that presents as a table, a freestanding drawer unit/
cooktop with the stately presence of a piece of furniture, and
a materials palette that connects with the rest of the home.
THE DETAILS
Tonal harmony
There’s clever tonal interplay at
work in this scheme. “The grey,
limed oak and dolomite were
all conceived as mid-tones in
the otherwise monochromatic
scheme,” says Juliette.
Fancy, free
In the detail
V-groove cabinetry in grey
adds a textural detail and
ensures the kitchen doesn’t
appear too contemporary
within the original architecture.
To enhance the streamlined
effect of the joinery, designers
Juliette and Sarah-Jane created
simple, routed pull handles.

The drawer unit with cooktop,
standing on black legs, was
designed as freestanding
furniture, in contrast to the
built-in feel of the grey wall.
WHAT’S TO LOVE

integrates with the living and
dining areas. It’s an extension of
both but remains functional and

URBAN LUXE
Industrial heritage encounters the thrill
of the new in a cutting-edge layout.
Perfect finish
Natural stone, timber veneer
and solid-timber floors
contribute layers of texture,
while the overhead beams
provide a strong reference to
the site’s industrial heritage.
Modern classic
Bench duty
The island bench is divided
into a workstation at one end
and a table at the other, with
a double-thick stone benchtop
at the working end delineating
the two. “This means there
are separate areas for food
preparation and dining, which
is especially useful when
entertaining,” says Miriam.

THE BRIEF
Interior designer Miriam Fanning of Mim Design decided to
pay homage to Melbourne’s historical warehouses and
factories when she designed the kitchens for the new Dux
apartments project in Melbourne’s inner east. She also
wanted to acknowledge the area’s reinvigorated nature,
so her scheme is rich in texture and natural finishes, while
presenting as luxurious and refined. A key element of this
4.5x2.45m entertainer’s kitchen is a sociably sized island unit.
THE DETAILS
Broad concept
The island unit measures
3670x1200mm, a perfect
size for accommodating a
crowd. Under-bench storage
consists of cupboards and
soft-close drawers, plus a fully
integrated dishwasher.
Work flow
The continuation of a
horizontal line of shelving
from the kitchen to the study
nook, and the use of similar
colours and materials in both
spaces, creates a visual flow.

DARK MATTER
A beguiling space for both cooking and socialising
was the first order up for this well-balanced kitchen.
V groovy
Designer Stewart Horton
used V-groove panelling as
a “slight nod” to the original
architecture. “It’s nostalgic
but in a pared-back way.”
Shades of grey
Photography by Alexander McIntyre.
The colour of the tiles was chosen
to echo the shade of grey veining
in the Smartstone benchtop.
THE BRIEF
A black freestanding Smeg stove was the starting point for
this kitchen, conceived as part of a redesigned Federation
home in Newcastle, NSW. “My clients loved this cooker;
it’s the star of the room,” says interior designer Stewart
Horton. “The kitchen was built around it and it dictated the
colour scheme.” Black under-bench joinery helps to anchor
the cooker while everything else is kept “light and white”,
says Stewart, in order to counterbalance its strong presence
in the space.

OF SPICE
THE PROJECT
The owners of this renovated Sydney home wanted their
new kitchen to be a warm and welcoming gathering space
for both daily family use and entertaining. Interior designers
Alexandra Donohoe and Marie Burgess of Decus Interiors
designed an island bench with integrated table to maximise
the connection between the kitchen and living area, and to
enhance interactions between the cook, family and guests. >

impression of solid stone.

The colour palette reflects
the homeowners’ love of
Indian food; the warm hues
represent spices such as

CHIC & SLEEK
Black, marble and copper constitute the
perfect recipe in this Sydney kitchen.
Marble play
“I originally wanted Calacatta
marble but opted instead for
Carrara with lots of veining.
It was cheaper but looks like
Calacatta,” says owner Yael.
Tactile & terrific

From the heavily veined marble
benchtop to the sheen of the
copper handles and tapware,
all the touch points of the
kitchen are textured,
gleaming and tactile.
THE VISION
Sydney apartment owner Yael Katz turned to Pinterest to
transform a ’70s-vintage, U-shaped kitchen into her dream
scheme. “I knew I wanted to use black and marble, and then
I found the perfect room to base my whole kitchen on,” she
says. The reference included dainty copper fixtures a genius
touch. It was all the inspiration Yael needed. She gutted her
room, enlisted a joiner and, using the existing space, created
a layout for maximum functionality. For visual appeal, she added
exquisite metallic details, including a copper sink and tap. >

Luxe vintage
“The marble is Calacatta Gold,
selected by the client to create
the opulent ’60s look they were
seeking,” says Travis Dean,
director of Cantilever Interiors.
THE PROJECT
This late-1950s Melbourne home is owned by mid-century
style enthusiasts. So when it came to designing a new kitchen,
the couple wanted a scheme that would be sympathetic to the
vintage of the house while updating it with a luxurious palette
of modern materials. Cantilever Interiors brought that idea
to life, positioning the kitchen in the original central location
but changing the configuration to connect it with the dining
and living spaces. In the process, they reprised a classic
mid-century ingredient: the servery.
>
White corner
The kitchen is square in shape,
3.8x4.2m, with two entry
points. White cabinetry
signifies the critical work
triangle: sink, cooktop, fridge.
Serve you well
The servery opening, a hallmark
of mid-century design, was
introduced to open up the
relationship between dining
room and kitchen. Using the
same joinery detailing in both
zones intensifies the connection.
Tall timbers
The joinery unit, open shelving
and drawers in blackbutt
veneer (pictured below
right) house the pantry and
appliances. Slimline solidtimber handles are another
subtle mid-century reference.
