Penny Learns To Create Instead of Spend!

OCTOBER 2010
Read-Aloud Story:
Penny Learns To Create
Instead of Spend!
scfederal.org
Penny was sitting at her desk making a list of everyone she
wanted to buy a Christmas present for this year. Her list was very
long, and even though she
saves her allowance every
week, she just didn’t have
enough money in her Kids
Club account to buy
everyone a gift.
Penny’s mom walked into
Penny’s room and asked her,
“What’s wrong, Penny?”
Penny sighed and told her
mom, “I don’t have enough
money to buy presents for
you, Daddy, Grandpa,
Grandma and for all my
friends at school.”

Penny thought for a few minutes and began to make a new list.
This time the list was full of ideas for gifts she could start
making. She would make a coupon for her mom that offered her a
free back massage from Penny. She would make her dad a CD of
his favorite music. And she decided to make a special cookie for
each of her friends at school. Pretty soon Penny had come up
with a gift idea for everyone on her list—and it didn’t even cost
her a penny!

Penny was very excited to start making the gifts and even
more excited that she did not have to spend any of her hard
earned money!

Penny’s mom said, “But
Penny, when you give gifts to
people, it is the thought that really counts, not how
much you spend on the gift. Why don’t you get creative and try to
think of gifts that you can make instead of buy?”

pound Oreos
oz. cream cheese
oz. dark chocolate bark
oz. white chocolate bark
Put the Oreos in a big plastic zipper bag, and smash them up!
Then mix them in a bowl with the cream cheese. Roll into balls
and put them on a cookie sheet. Chill for 45 minutes.
Have your mom or dad melt the chocolate separately in a double
boiler or in the microwave. With a toothpick, dip the balls in the
dark chocolate and place on wax-paper-lined cookie sheet. Using
a fork or a small spoon, drizzle white chocolate over balls. Let
cool. Store in airtight container, in refrigerator.
